In my school, and this was 30 years ago, every class took attendance for their own internal class records, but it was only 2nd period that was sent to the front office and compiled into an overall list. Nobody ever cross-checked unless you happened to get caught, which was rare.
when I was teaching, the kids who cut my class were usually the trouble-makers and pains in the ass that I didn't want in class anyway. marked them absent, gave them a zero for the day and went about teaching the kids who actually gave a damn. If on any given day, if there were more than a couple of "skippers" missing from class, I'd give a pop quiz at the end of class consisting of 2 or 3 very very easy questions from the material covered and count it as a test grade.
