you can discriminate for a good reason, a bad reason or no reason at all as long as its not an ILLEGAL (ie race sex, gender, national origin, age or disability) reason. Being a porker is not a protected status nor should it ever be

Though why would a restaurant turn away fat people? That's a sure fire road to bankruptcy right there.

Whatever happened to the time where little dumb things like this weren't news-worthy?

Someone's an insensitive prick = news story worthy of investigating and reporting on?

We're steeped in wars left and right and that's what they want to talk about?

Must have been a slow day. It's kind of cruel, but I don't see it being "breaking news" either.

that's a very good point.

:doh

Did they really think they would be ridiculed LESS because they went on TV and whined about being described as fat? YOU ARE FAT. AND THEY WERE EATING FRENCH FRIES...GOOD GOD. These women are obviously not great at making decisions so I shouldn't be surprised they went to the news.

It was rude and poor customer service, but people don't have the right to not be offended

When you are paying for the customer service you do have a right to be offended by the the lack of it

its far different than using a racial or ethnic slur since blacks, Latinos etc cannot help what color or race they were born

Agree, maybe not egregious, but still derogatory and demeaning nonetheless.

They are fat. No doubt about it.

You have the ability to alert the management, but you don't have a right to refuse to pay your bill or any other such action.

To most people, calling two girls in a restaurant fat is a derogatory and demeaning statement.

Predudiced would imply some kind of misjudgment though. Calling someone 'Grosse' or 'Gordo' in french or spanish wouldnt imply any insult because its simply a physical description. If you* feel being fat carries negative connotations then lose some ****ing weight.

Quoted for truth. Complications from obesity are costing this country a fortune so don't act like its a victimless act to be fat. I was blessed with a high metabolism that kept me very skinny for the first 25 years of my life. Now I have to exercise and eat right to keep from gaining weight. I can't believe how many perfect strangers come up and scoff at me for eating a salad because I'm not fat. Its a commonly held idea especially in lower income area that its healthy to be a little overweight. Its not. So I'm going to continue to eat my salads and run so I don't get diabetes.

I get the same thing. I'm a woman 5'7" and weigh 138 pounds, but I have to work at it and when my GF's and I go out to eat, they tell me, come on, we're out to eat, but I know if I don't keep track I'll be back to when I was fat at 180 lbs. and I don't evah want to go back to that. Right now at 61 years of age...yep, I said it, I have no diabetes which runs in my family, no high blood pressure, which runs in my family...watch I'll die of a heart attack tomorrow...LOL but at least I'll fit in my casket.

I agree with this, unless they have some of health condition which makes it more difficult.

Which many do, such as hypothyroidism and also some drugs they may be taking for conditions. You know all those drugs have side affects and most always say weight gain or weight loss, I've never taken one where I've had weight loss...LOL

I took a drug one time and gained 10 lbs. in 5 days...LOL

The bill has to be paid, but they also have the right to take other action, such as take it public, complain to the manager etc.

If I was the manager that bartender would be fired for poor customer service, and the women would be given a free meal as compensation.

stupid act by jeff, the bartender
"jeff, we are docking the $25 meal we comped from your next paycheck
insult another patron and you are gone"
and then devise a more PC manner in which to identify each table in the restaurant

manager should not have smirked (but he's gotta be human and he was looking those angry fat girls in the eyes at the time)
should have comped the meal straight away

that said, there was no right for the women to refuse to pay their tab
hope they never choose to 'dine' at dirty dicks restaurant & bar

but if i show up and the tab indicates 'bald old fart wearing odd clothes' i'm suing

The dinner bill for three friends at Chilly D's Restaurant stung, but it wasn't the price - printed on the top of the receipt were the words "Fat Girls".

"I got the bill, I was looking at bill [and] I was like, 'Why does this receipt say 'fat girls?'" customer Christine Duran said.

The friends had dined out at the Stockton, Calif., restaurant, which is a part of the Cameo Casino Restaurant, on Thursday. The bill lists charges for three tri-tips with fries and three sodas, for a total of $25.50. A bartender named Jeff had apparently typed in "Fat Girls" to keep track of their bill.

When Duran asked a manager for an explanation, he "had like a smirk on his face, like it was funny but trying not to laugh," she said.

Folks need little "systems" to help them in their jobs,
and the easier those systems are, the better the folks are able to perform.

In a job where differentiating between myriad people is important,
we ALL use age/build/race/sex/hair color/etc.,

and since when is stating the obvious,
one of the very cornerstones of Free Speech,

unacceptable?

On the other hand,

WTF is running that juke-joint?!?

They've never heard of NUMBERING THE TABLES???

And if the customers are wandering about,

management hasn't thought of another means to identify them?

Totally believe it. My mom has the same problem. She is on all kinds of medication because she has MS, and she is too weak to exercise.

We're not speaking French or Spanish, we speak English. In the US, calling people fat does carry negative connotations.

And, based on your statement, "lose some ****ing weight", you could use some work on your English.

Yes, I worked as a waitress at two different restaurants, and tables were always numbered.

My wife suffered depression when her mom was dying of brain cancer. the stuff the gave her caused weight gain as does the steroids she now takes for adult onset asthma and some other respiratory ailments so she has a perpetual 25-35 pounds of extra weight she cannot shed despite 3-5 hours of strenuous workouts a week. I am about 15 pounds heavier than I want to be but I have no excuses-I eat late at night and that is the culprit but I am not willing to change my schedule.

MOst people who are overweight are overweight because of choices they make. for everyone who has legitimate medical reasons, I suspect there are dozens who either eat too much or exercise way too little

I also note there are mental issues as well

The law firm I first worked for after leaving school had a computer tech who was huge. I remember she was a pain because the computer room was on the same temperature control as several associates' offices and she was constantly turning the temperature down as low as it would go because between being a huge (almost 400 pounds) woman and the heat from the computers, her room was hot so the rest of us nearby were freezing. One day, I was at a Christmas party at one of the senior partners' houses and he had pictures from the first party he had attended years ago and there was this gorgeous babe in a micro mini (mid 60's). I said who was that and he said "Kristy" the computer tech. apparently Kristy's hot body had attracted a scumbag boyfriend-then husband who abused and ultimately raped her several times after he went to prison she tripled in size. A shrink I retained as an expert in a sexual harassment case noted that a subconscious desire to be unattractive often follows women who had been abused

so in some cases obesity is an intentional act though the reasons for it were not

You can sue, but not likely you would win. If they refused to serve them because they were fat, they might have a discrimination suit.

You didn't read the story, the fat girls was on a receipt, obviously they were served.

There are certainly medical and emotional reasons.

no doubt but it seems everyone who is a large makes that excuse. I tend to be rather skeptical
