The controversial “Piss Christ” artwork Sen. Alfonse D’Amato once branded as a “deplorable, despicable display of vulgarity,” is coming to New York, and security is being heavily ramped- up at the gallery that will show the piece.
Andres Serrano’s controversial “Piss Christ” to be displayed in New York - NYPOST.com
Almost immediately after it was announced that “Piss Christ” would be making a surprise return to the Big Apple, Christian leaders and conservative lawmakers began accusing the Obama administration of religious hypocrisy, saying while the White House has been silent on the anti-Christian photograph, it has constantly and strongly condemned the low-budget anti-Muslim YouTube clip “Innocence of Muslims” that offended people of the Islamic faith and supposedly sparked unrest in the Middle East.
“The Obama administration’s hypocrisy and utter lack of respect for the religious beliefs of Americans has reached an all-time high,” Rep. Michael Grimm (R-N.Y.)told Fox News. “I call on President Obama to stand up for America’s values and beliefs and denounce the ‘Piss Christ’ that has offended Christians at home and abroad.”

Obviously Christians, if they don't wish to see this kind of thing anymore, should simply riot and kill people since apparently acting like complete savages and in an entirely illogical manner is justification for denying other people freedom of speech.

Only when radical Islam is offended comes the flood of apologies.
I take Andres Serrano, the artist, at his word when he claims that the photograph"alludes to a perceived commercializing or cheapening of Christian icons in contemporary culture." Piss Christ - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Let's look at the photo:

I would like to see an artist made print of the photo to see it in the color and saturation that Serrano intended. This scan probably does not do the original justice.
I think the image is well composed and has a soft quality that makes the crucified Christ look even more tragic than it would out of the urine. The lighting particularly is well chosen. To me, the photo says that the sacrifice of Christ on the cross retains its dignity, perhaps it is even enhanced, by the degradation and marginalization of the crucifixion in popular culture.
All Christians know that persecution is coming, because it has been foretold. We must all expect to suffer for His name. Serrano, whether intentionally or unintentionally, has made an artistic statement about that very reality. Through it all, Christ's sacrifice retains its deep significance, and our salvation is not diminished one bit by the slings and arrows of those who hate or trivialize the word of God.
The scan is pretty good.

Have you seen the original?
Yes several times. I've also met the artist. I use to watch the crowds out in front of the New Museum on Broadway protesting from a photo studio I worked in.
I see. What do you think of the photo? Controversy aside, what do you think it's value is as art?
It is a fine photo. Would make a good stock image if it didn't have all the baggage associated with it.
The biggest lie told about this piece it's that is an attack on Jesus. If anything it's about the way in which modern Christians have corrupted the message of Christ.
And legal repercussions.
I just do not understand this crap.
Honestly, only comes from people who have a beef with Muslims.
Certainly J-mac and you do.
How the hell is it an apology, for the government to say "Hey We don't endorse a Islam being mocked in this manner" because the United States has a great deal more to gain by saying such a thing than they have to gain from ignorant islamophobes who associate the few violent muslims with the rest of them.
That's then taken by far right wingers as "Apologizing to terrorists" when he's turning them into chicken Tika using drones every other week.
I don't even know what universe you people live in... honestly.
This isn't about apologies, this is about you being pissed off that there aren't more people sticking it to Islam because you have a problem with it, Obama administration in particular.
IOW, you're ok with any religion being offended, as long as it's not Islam? Am I close?
Where is the outrage from the Obama Administration? Nowhere.
Only when radical Islam is offended comes the flood of apologies. That's Obama's way, but everybody knows that by now, so it's no surprise really.
