Don't get me wrong. I also absolve him. But absolution* is for all, not just a select few. And it makes a sham of absolution to an industrial scale slaver who enslaved 600 plus souls while denying absolution to some barefoot, bareback Johnny Reb who was too broke to own a patch of land, let alone a slave.
*absolution to some extent is used gratuitously. Only the victim can absolve his abuser. Absolution by proxy is invalid. Only those 600 plus human beings Thomas Jefferson put in chains can absolve him. Martin Luther King Jr cannot absolve Thomas Jefferson for harm inflicted to those 600 souls
