Confederate names make comeback, triggering lawsuits

Some descendants of slavery seemed to absolve him:

Don't get me wrong. I also absolve him. But absolution* is for all, not just a select few. And it makes a sham of absolution to an industrial scale slaver who enslaved 600 plus souls while denying absolution to some barefoot, bareback Johnny Reb who was too broke to own a patch of land, let alone a slave.

*absolution to some extent is used gratuitously. Only the victim can absolve his abuser. Absolution by proxy is invalid. Only those 600 plus human beings Thomas Jefferson put in chains can absolve him. Martin Luther King Jr cannot absolve Thomas Jefferson for harm inflicted to those 600 souls

The victors write the history books

Interestingly, in case of the Civil War, because whites throughout the country rejected the idea of freedom and equality for blacks, the losers wrote that history for many tears. Hence most people still do not know that slavery and its extention caused the war.

Indeed, absolve us too strong a word, but you know what I mean.

In this case they were literally the good guys.
Yes the Union was preserved

And the Emancipation Proclamation laid down the gauntlet to the traitorous South.

Though those slaves now free, had many decades to travel for full rights.

We learn from history, no matter how uncomfortable.

That's just a denial of history. Democrats love to shift the responsibility for their party's history to political opponents.

Another attempt at deflection.

The Klan was created an supported by Democrats. It enjoyed the zenith of its power under Democrat icon Woodrow Wilson an ardent racist. Of course there are no screeching demands to purge his name. Democrats take care of his legacy just like he was a slave master or segregationist.
This is not true.

This has REPEATEDLY been disproven.

"The KKK was founded as the military arm of the Democratic Party."
false

"Although the names stayed the same, the platforms of the two parties reversed each other in the mid-20th century, due in large part to white ‘Dixiecrats’ flight out of the Democratic Party and into the Republican Party after the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964," she said. "By then, the Democratic Party had become the party of ‘reform,’ supporting a variety of ‘liberal’ causes, including civil rights, women’s rights, etc. whereas this had been the banner of the Republican Party in the nineteenth century."

The organization of the Ku Klux Klan coincided with the beginning of the second phase of post-Civil War Reconstruction, put into place by the more radical members of the Republican Party in Congress. After rejecting President Andrew Johnson’s relatively lenient Reconstruction policies, in place from 1865 to 1866, Congress passed the Reconstruction Act over the presidential veto.

That article disproved nothing. It's mainly a: secessionists and kkk members happened to be Democrat, but the totality of the Democratic party is not to blame

Gee, what a surprise Democrat media apologists deny history with weak equivocations like claims a splinter of a splinter of Democrats started the Civil War so that somehow means the party is not responsible. 11 of 23 states seceded from the union with 4 more states considered "border" states of questionable loyalty to the union. That's not a splinter by any standard.

Former Confederate General and KKK founding father Nathan Bedford Forest spoke at the Democrat national convention. The KKK found a willing ally in Democrat President Woodrow Wilson who worked tirelessly to purge blacks from the Federal workforce.

But hey, let's ignore the facts in favor of partisan spin that confirms Democrat bias
Brilliant.

We disagree on this point.

The democrats did not found the KKK. Some racist scumbag former Confederates did.

Total complete right-wing bullshit.

A collection of former Confederate scumbags founded the KKK. Period. End of story.

Confederate scumbag Democrats founded the KKK. Democrat politicians like Robert Byrd supported it as part of Jim Crow segregation. Why the insistence on deceptive edits?

No.

Not true.

The founding of the KKK had NOTHING to do with the Democrats.

That terrorist group was founded by former confederates.

Robert Byrd renounced the KKK before he died. Strom Thurman did not but he was just a racist asshole to begin with.

The Dixiecrats became republicans once the Democrat party gave up on white supremacy.

Modern Democrats have NOTHING to do with the KKK.

Democrats in the mid 1800s and early 1900s were deeply conservative. Funny how Republicans never manage to work up the courage to face that fact.

Yes, and both parties had people like Strom Thurmond and Robert Byrd in the South. Today's parties are not yesterday's parties.

So, sane posters, have you successfully identified the Confederates here now?

Do you think those are the only people that object? Arent they "people?" Why dont their opinions count?
Sure. If people don't like it, they should vote for new school board members.

No, it's a state issue, since the state's residents pay their salaries and have to suffer the disrespect of glorifying those that fought to keep them enslaved or that otherwise disagree with that glorification.

That the defenders of Confederate commemorations here are conservatives themselves illustrates a rather mind-boggling lack of self-awareness.

In Virginia it's a local issue. There is no statewide vote for school board.

Read what I wrote again. Jeebus.

The decent, intelligent liberal and conservative voters know that if they allow the racists to force the change in one backwards district, others will follow. They're the ones that control how a state's public ed tax dollars are spent. And that's where the school board's salaries come from.

I cannot believe that you need a diagram to understand this.

I do not quite agree, but I agree that it is accurate that the KKK was founded by Confederates
