BERKELEY Calif. (Reuters) - Two California politicians have called for a host of Fox News Channel's "The Five" program to resign, saying Bob Beckel's use of the term "Chinamen" was racist.

The pundit is facing criticism for using the word on air last week as well as for suggesting Chinese computer science students come to study in the United States only to pose a security threat.

Bob Beckel, one of the few Liberal pundits on FOX News, has really stepped in it. And yes, he should resign. His statements were outrageous.

Not sure that it is intentionally racist, just ignorant.

"Sissy" is a slur against the LGBTQ community.

Generalization of an entire country? Yes. Ignorant? Yes. Racist? I don't think so, not in this context.

Here is the definition of racist:

1: a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race
2: racial prejudice or discrimination

Now, the comments he made were a generalization of people from China, not all Asians. His commments were ignorant, but not racist IMO.

Yup.

The country would be a lot better if people grew up a little bit.

I had CNN on in the background last week and Don Lemon was covering some controversy over a gay comedian who apparently talks like a black woman and a black woman who is offended. They just sat there calling each other derogatory things then getting offended that the other was calling them derogatory things until Lemon basically stepped in and pointed out that they're fighting over something so completely asinine that it's just impossible for him to take it seriously.

"Chinamen" is old fashioned like "orientals", but I wouldn't call it a slur. It's ridiculous that the activist fringe in this country gets to decide what's offensive.

This is rediculous... Wake up America, political correctness is the real enemy.

Is there a clause in his contract that says he should be fired for saying something 'outrageous'. I tire of people (especially politicians) quickly rushing out and demand a tv person resign/get fired because the person said something in opposition.

In keeping with the spirit of the Inquisition, I think we should do a little exploratory surgery on old Bob to find out exactly what fluids or bile are out of whack. We'll get 'em straightened out for him even though he unfortunately won't survive the experience. At least he'll get to heaven's doors with balanced fluids, and that is, after all, what we all want.

So I take it tha Englishmen is racist as well?

Bob Beckel who I like says some crazy things but please.... I wouldn't consider "Chinamen" a racial slur.

Judy Chu (D/Progressive) is a Groucho Maoist.

If she's not back stabbing the U.S. military she's back stabbing white liberals.

I normally don't agree with him, but I don't see the big deal at all.
But hey the they fired that announcer for using the word "chink". When Jeremy Lin made it to the NBA.
Of course he said "chink in armor" of a whole other team after a loss and no reference to Lin at all, but hey. Cant be too careful.

It would be closer to Englandman (chinese man would be like englishmen, its all in the tense). but still, this is not a pejorative i am aware of. Its not like he is saying yellow people or something.

Have you ever heard of the term "chit chaser" ?

It's an old U.S. Navy and China Marine term.

It fail out of use during WW ll but if it were still used today the PC word police would have labeled it as a derogatory term.

You can figure out exactly what a chit chaser was. In Vietnam we weren't paid in greenbacks but military script. Chit had become script a form of military money.

In China from the 1900 to 1941 when sailors and Marines went ashore on liberty they didn't have greenbacks but military chits. When an American warship was getting ready to go back to sea a Chinaman would collect all of the chits from the bar owners and prostitutes and show up at the ship and the ships captain would exchange the chits for good old American greenbacks or silver coinage.

The Chinaman who conducted this business of collecting the chits and exchanging it for real money was called a chit chaser.

Some wear during the 1950's it was misspelled to "**** chaser" and some thought it was a derogatory term for a Chinaman.

In the Navy, we had to have a "chit," for about anything. The closest thing I can describe it as is a "hall pass." You want to go to sick bay? Get a chit and walk it up the chain of command. Is your face breaking out from using a razor blade? Get a chit for permission to not have to shave. Does the E-nothing want to get his/her liberty card to go out this weekend? Walk your chit through and get it signed. Want to wear civilian clothes? (E-1 thru E-3,) Get a chit.

They all begin with, "Respectfully request to <fill-in-the-blank.>

I've also have heard the term bitch chit used in some companies where an employe would fill out a bitch chit bitching about amost anything.

I'd have to agree. I'd much rather see an expanded presentation from the person who's alleged to have said something outrageous as to what and why he said it, that, and / or, and an on air apology, should it require that.

The idea that politicians would be able to summarily get a person to resign harks back to the days of Watergate, and if Nixon would have called for the resignation of Woodward and Bernstein. No, I don't think that politicians have anything to say in the matter of on-air personalities.
