Biggest break you ever got from a cop...

Mine was yesterday. Got stopped for having expired license plates.

Me: "OMG! I must've forgotten to put the little sticker on.

LEO: Uhhh, yeah, I checked that. You haven't paid. Your sticker expired 1/31/2016."

Me: "OMG!"

He checked my license, came back and gave me a warning. Pointed me to the currency exchange a half-mile up the road.

Can you imagine! A whole year I've driven with expired plates? Wellllll, they aren't expired any more.....

I don't remember getting too many breaks. The one time that comes to mind was on I-40 just east of Kingman on my way to Las Vegas. I had to pee something fierce and was doing about 90 to get to the exit with the rest room. As I went under an overpass I saw a cop on the ramp. He hit his lights when I was already a quarter mile past him and I knew I was busted so I just pulled over and waited. When he got to the window I explained the situation and must have looked desperate because he was back with a ticket for less than 10mph over and made it out in record time.

Cop would not let me, told me to drive back to CB south, he escorted me with lights on the whole way.

I've only lived in two states where I needed to register a vehicle. In California you can only do it at the state DMV. In Iowa you can only do it at your county admin building. (Iowa's method is dumb, to me, but I digress.)

Other than that, I know of businesses you're talking about, but never called them that. I don't remember any specific generic name, though. Only whatever the business name was.

But we were making too much noise, and idiots were doing the stupidest ****. Eventually, some neighbor called the cops on us for being too ****ing loud.

Hmm...that reminds me of something.

When I was in college we rented a house that backed up to the back of a bunch of commercial buildings on a main street in town. Across that main street was a Pizza Hut that did TONS of delivery business. One night we got our hands on a water balloon launcher that could reach the pizza place (about 100 yards). We bombed the living daylights out of every delivery person that came out the door for about 15 minutes before we heard sirens. The cops managed to find us (probably had nothing to do with the 8 cars in the front yard and the beer can Christmas tree) and informed us that if they chose to we could be charged with assault. Some genius on the couch opens his yap and says "Assault? They were water balloons!" to which the cops said "So, it was you guys".

The cops left after giving us a stern warning. That was VERY fortunate because the "genius" on the couch had about a dozen rather large and rather illegal plants growing in the back yard.

High school speeding, 2 girls in the car, all under age, booze in the car, cigarettes, state trooper pulled us over, told me to take the girls home and go home.

When I was young and dumb I had a lead foot. I didn't get the name Mary Andretti for nothing. Got a lot of speeding tickets. I was at my limit by half a point and got pulled over for speeding. Once I gave him my license and registration he went back to the cruiser and did his check. He came back laughing and said if he gave me a ticket it meant I would lose my license so instead he gave a lecture and a warning. I took that warning seriously. And to this day thank G-d I did not hurt another individual in my stupidity.

It was a long time before I got pulled over again. I was on my way home from MI. In MI you have to fly or get run over. I flew past the state line not realizing I was now in Ohio where the speed limit dropped drastically. State Highway patrol pulled me over. I was traveling alone in the early morning hours. He clocked me at 77 in a 55 mph zone. I told him I did not realize I had crossed over state lines and that the people in MI drive like bats out of Hell and I was just trying to keep up with traffic. It was the truth. He was a cute. Hunkalicious. He came back and issued me a warning. No ticket.

Break: DUI when I was 21 or 22, when the cop let me park my car and gave me a ride home.

Luck: when I was about 16 and had a bag of pot in my pocket that the cop somehow missed when he searched me.

Back before I went active duty Army I was in the Texas Army National Guard I drilled near my college, which was Texas A&M. During the summers, however, I lived with my parents back in Fort Worth.

So I would leave the house really early in the morning to make the 2 1/2 hour drive. Sometimes I would lose track of my speed. Anyway, on two different times making that trip I got stopped for speeding. In both instances I was given a warning. I have zero doubt that it was because I was in uniform. I never caught such a break when in civilian clothes.

When I was in HS. A half dozen of us were drinking (Maxx Beer) out of town by the canal (irrigation ditch). Sheriffs came up the road and we took off and one of my friends started throwing beer out of the car (into the potato fields) as fast as he could. Sheriff pulled us over and said we saw a lot of beer go flying when we pulled up, why don't you kids just go home now... so we did. I'm sure the outcome would have been different had we been drunk, but am ever so thankful I didn't have to explain an MIP to my folks.

Take a second look at the date she posted, it was a year and if that was a Chicago cop I am amazed that she got a break.

Was driving north on a city street when I realized my destination was the other way. Turned west for a block on a side street, then turned back south on a street that I knew was one-way north - just wasn't paying attention. Deputy lit me up and checked my license, which still listed my address in another town in the same state. He said, "I see you're not from here." Like a dumbass, I said, "Oh no, officer, I moved here two months ago." (Per state law, I should have changed my license address within 30 days.) He said, "Well, you're probably not familiar with our streets yet." Let me go with just a "Watch the one-way signs next time." Guy was trying really hard not to bust me, in spite of my own stupidity.

Once in a while, you'll get a Barney Fife, but it's been my experience usually cops give you what you give them. Be cool and they will be - be an asshole and they will be.

The only "break" was getting pulled over on the way to get my car inspected because I'd managed to have overlooked it for months. He said it's a moving violation and he just doesn't want to see the insurance companies get more money over it.

I think it also helped that I really was on my way to get it inspected, told him where I was going, and he happened to know the place.







Oh right. This is a campus "cop," so I'm not sure how much it counts. Way back in college, we were smoking some pot outside where we always did (and were always left alone). It was Winter break so virtually nobody was on campus.

A cop came by on the regular patrol and we put things out of sight. Don't know if he saw/smelled, but he guessed. Anyway, he goes down the road, turns around, comes back, stops, rolls down his window. He asks "where is everyone else?" (Again, there was usually a larger regular group of us hanging out in the same spot outside).

"Went home for vacation; we're the only ones left."

Cop nods. Grins, and says "well, I guess you better party till you puke then, huh?" and drives off.....
