I have been reading around in these forums, and it seems there are some people that believe are humans are equal, others do not think this is the case.

And so I ask...

Are all people equal? Why or why not?

Yes and no. We are all equals in the sense of humanity and race. Race doesn't decide intelligence. Now we're are also not equal, that is the financial part of the problem.

Very good point, it is how you define equal.

I agree with almost everything you said, (in reality I agree with it all, but I am being the devil's advocate here to stir up a discussion) but why the inequality with money? Wouldn't that suggest that most poor people are not equal in the sense with ability?

Just saying they are unequal because of thier lack of money, applies to the rich, they are unequal because of thier excessive money. It's not about ability, just how much money you have. It's terrible but true.

Some people are more capable than others. That's simply the way the world is, even if it isnt PC. Now, that doesn't mean we should abandon the less capable ones or force them to work in factories for 10 bucks a day or something. It just means we shouldn't expect the same level of success out of everyone, and we shouldn't try to force equality.

People should all be equal under the law, and as far as standards of how we treat human beings.

But people aren't equal. Some people are better than others at certain things. Some people are more intelligent, more creative, etc.

This doesn't mean people who are less intelligent/creative/etc can't be good and valuable people. I know some pretty thick folks who do some really great things (run soup kitchens, etc). I also know some geniuses who use those smarts to screw everyone they can.

In short, there are many different metrics with which you can measure a human being.

We're equal in our humanity and unequal in our individuality. I would also argue that we're all equal in our inherent worth and value.

This vaguely reminds me of those yahoo dating tips. Stand out! But don't be too weird!

As others said, this really depends on what you consider to be "equal." Are we all equal weight and height? No. Are we all equally good at certain tasks? Not really.

But are we all capable of emotions? Absolutely (though this can vary widely). Can we all think? Arguable, but generally, yes we can.

So it just depends on what you value.

People are equal in the sense that they are all entitled to equal treatment under the law and in the eyes of government, etc. However, in terms of gifts/intelligence, they are hardly equal, and these inequalities are played out in painful ways on this forum, daily. We have some uber morons who post here.

Equal in what way? You need to qualify your question.

This is exactly the notion I came to the thread to posit, and you have phrased it more succinctly than I would've been able to.

We are equal in terms of rights.

Equal in relations to what exactly?

Impossible to answer this question without further information.
