AOC to be sued after court rules Trump can't block people on Twitter

No, actually. It's all a matter of whether or not they use their account for official government announcements, which AOC does not.

I see where she has two accounts, one for campaigning @AOC and one for official government business @RepAOC. Not sure if her personal campaign account counts as a public forum. Either way, I hope she doesn't side with censorship.

I agreed with this ruling for Trump since he's a public figure and now it looks like it will also affect more politicians from both parties. Notably AOC as the first target.

I just think it's amusing how all the Trump haters were cheering the ruling without thinking how it might also effect their side.

Good ruling either way.

It's an idiotic ruling ruling, no matter how stupid it makes Leftists look.

Are you really trying to argue AOC and every other politician wasn't using social media the same way Trump was? To promote legislative agendas, make announcements and comment on current politics?
None of those are "official government business "

On social issues, I'm progressive (except guns). On economics, conservative (except green). On foreign policy, conservative (hawk). I'm kind of a neocon in the classic definition of 'liberal with moderate economics and a hawk'. But I'm well right on economics. My cornerstones are in my signature.

So, no one will have me. It's not like I have a choice. Both parties kick me out.

I don't **** talk either party. No one has ever heard libtards or conwhatevers out of me. I don't take shots at democrats or republicans, ever. Ten years here.

On paper we sound very similar but in real life we're nothing alike. I despised baby Bush with a passion and the GOP of his time. Obama was my biggest disappointment and disliked him only slightly less than Bush.

I'm a hardcore Trump supporter and have no problem admitting how much I enjoy tormenting the Left. Especially since they've forgotten the working man and instead focused their attention on every goofy, irrelevant, whiny ass issue out there.

Clinton was my biggest disappointment. I like Obama, but not his economics or (especially) his foreign policy.

lol

I liked Clinton.

Go figure.

Not his economics or foreign policy, right? Plus, he was a slimeball. Obama was a legit family man.

Same. Thanks for informing me about the double set of accounts, I didn't realize she had an official one.

This case is rather different, IMO. Trump's Twitter is the official Twitter account of the Presidency, which is stored and archived by the Library of Congress. You can see Obama's Twitter handle as President is now managed by the Library of Congress if you check his page.

AOC's page is her personal page, which does not fall under that official scrutiny. Therein lies the difference.

That's one debate. Another might be how far down the food chain do we go? State legislature? Governors? City council?

Already established at much lower levels.

You can't block or ban people in these instances, whether on Twitter, Facebook, etc.

You're going to have a hard time arguing AOC wasn't using her account in the same manner Trump was.

Correct; AOC will be rebuked.

:)

It doesn't look like the court is in her favor. So if she unblocks them...then what would prevent Twitter from blocking them?

I wish they would; it would be great case to take to the Supremes.

(Twitter would lose.)

Both are public forums.

LOVE this ruling rebuking Trump.

:)

If she has a third PURELY/SOLELY personal account, she MIGHT be able to block.

But the two accounts in question cannot block people.

:)

I don't think Twitter would lose. They're still a privately owned company and can make their own rules and block people all the time for breaking those rules.

For official communication -- which AOC absolutely does.

I expected the Trump ruling. This is one of the downfalls of mixing your work and personal communication - which is why it's always a good idea to separate the two.

Trump should have had a presidential account (and a campaign account). He could have made all of the personal commentary he wanted on his personal account and blocked whoever he desired. It's mixing the two that caused his headache - and AOC is going to have the same issue. (I think most politicians have a separately managed account, or just don't use it for personal comments).

On the Democrat side - this was a big issue with Clinton as well. She used her personal account as her official account, making it her government email. It should have all been subject to official scrutiny.

Yup.

And this broadly interpreted.

If AOC makes a single comment saying she thinks beer shouldn't be sold at Yankee Stadium on her baseball page on Facebook?

Boom - she now cannot block/ban/censor repliers or replies.

Other constitutional issues apply to all levels of government, so why not this?
