"TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A new amendment to Florida’s so-called “Don’t Say Gay” bill would explicitly require schools to inform parents of their child’s sexual orientation, and put a deadline on how soon they must tell the family. The amendment filed by bill sponsor Rep. Joe Harding, R-Williston, on Feb. 18 changes the bill to instead not only require disclosure, but requires schools to tell parents within six weeks of learning the student is any sexual orientation other than straight.

In the originally filed version, the bill already required schools inform families of their child’s LBTQ+ status, should the student inform a teacher, counselor or other school personnel. However, it left an option for exemption from disclosure, or “outing” as it’s known, for cases where there was a suspicion of the information leading to abuse, neglect or abandonment. Based on the amendment’s instruction, that safety mechanism would be removed.

The amendment instructs revision by replacing the relevant section with protocol for how school leaders can “develop a plan, using all available governmental resources,” to tell parents their child’s sexual orientation “through an open dialogue in a safe, supportive, and judgment-free environment that respects the parent-child relationship and protects the mental, emotional, and physical well-being of the student.”"

Should schools be required to 'out' a student to his or her parents?

Good show cons. Outting gays in Florida, going to war against birth control in Michigan and lying about CRT as a racial boogey man everywhere else. These are the most important policies in con-land.

I foresee a lot of stupid parents harassing their kid into suicide or lifelong mental health issues. Thanks Florida!

Is this so that the parents can start the intervention early? What is the point of this? Who got together and decided this was necessary?
The point of this is to intimidate kids back into the closet.

You have to get the kids killed by religious fanatic parents or you aren't protecting them.

Also, how would a school know if a student is Gay?

Kids who are gay or who are confused about their sexuality often want to talk to an adult about it. If they don't feel they can't talk to their parents, they sometimes talk to a teacher or school counselor.

The cruelty and the punching down are the point.

This is sort of the first attempt to get things back to the days where you could just beat up or kill Gay people without any consequences.

I expect the usual suspects to come by and tell us why that's okay.

I wonder if this bill still forces schools to schools to report to parents that their children have ordered a vegetarian meal.

Schools should not know more about a students sex life then the parents.

What the hell? Is this from The Onion, because it can't be real.

The Grand Old Party gets more freaky and vulgar by the day.

Those who support these kind of repressive bills tend to not know or ignore the incremental approach the authors of them tend to take. They wake up one day, hopefully, anyway, asking "how did we get here?!"

If they “don’t feel they can’t talk about it” then there should be no reason for the school to keep secrets

You may be confused here. Its not actually the school building to whom these kids talk, its with human being with whom they have developed a level of trust. Aweful, isn't it? The state should intercede.

I'd be fascinated as to the nature of the "withheld" information.

State officials should not as a general rule hold more trust amongst children then parents.

Considering the nature of the bill, I suspect its being gay or eating vegetarian meal.
