After Massive Contribution To Scott Walker, NBA Owner Will Get $250 Million In Tax Dollars For New Arena | ThinkProgress

Wisconsin Governor and Republican presidential candidate Scott Walker will sign a bill Wednesday finalizing his controversial plan to spend $250 million in state, county and city funds — plus tens of millions more in interest and future tax breaks — on a new basketball arena for the Milwaukee Bucks. Walker has characterized the plan to replace the existing 27-year-old NBA arena as beneficial to taxpayers, arguing that the state would lose even more money if they declined to do so. But voices from across the political spectrum are blasting the plan, saying that pouring money into private sports stadiums is a terrible investment, and arguing the team’s Wall Street billionaire owners should shoulder the burden, since they’ll be reaping the profits.

It's the good kind of welfare.

Republican approved welfare.

Re: After Massive Contribution To Scott Walker, NBA Owner Will Get $250 Million In Ta

Since the bill first passed the state legislature it is not a Walker only deal. How much pork and corporate welfare has Obama signed into law? Is that all considered, by you, to be Obama pork and corporate welfare?

Re: After Massive Contribution To Scott Walker, NBA Owner Will Get $250 Million In Ta

Interestingly During the Debate Walker said it's not government that creates jobs even though the argument presented for this corporate welfare is that it will create jobs. Ironically Scott Walker also referenced HOW the northern counties of Virginia are among the most affluent when he made that statement. He's obviously ignorant of the government's role when it comes to those Northern Virginia counties.

A thoughtful person would recognize that Scott Walker is not ready for the national stage but since he's a Republican it's no wonder that his ignorant comments weren't challenged. His supporters are just as ignorant.

When you dont get your news from 'thinkprogess' (the absolute KING of oxymorons)....

"The Wisconsin state Assembly voted Tuesday to spend $250 million in public funds on a new arena for the Milwaukee Bucks, a deal that both Republicans and Democrats lauded as good for the state and city.

No one spoke against the measure, which passed on a bipartisan 52-34 vote as Bucks coach Jason Kidd and team president Peter Feigin watched from the gallery. They made the rounds before and after the roughly hourlong debate, posing for pictures with both lawmakers and members of the public.

“The Bucks will not only remain home in Wisconsin, but we’ll soon begin a transformative economic development project that will help revitalize our community and region,” Feigin said in a statement issued by the team.

The bill, which passed the Senate on a bipartisan 21-10 vote earlier this month, now heads to Gov. Scott Walker for his signature.

Both parties vote for corporate welfare, yes. And?

Re: After Massive Contribution To Scott Walker, NBA Owner Will Get $250 Million In Ta

Remember when the supreme court said that these kinds of contributions not only don't create corruption, but don't even create the appearance of corruption? I'm glad that the reasoning that allows this perfectly valid exercise of free speech wasn't a bald-faced lie.

Agreed. Which makes the moronic rants about Walker look like the drooling hate filled drivel it was...right?

See...every once in a while, you and I find common ground.

This is a thread about Presidential candidate Scott Walker and you're upset people are talking about him?

As Duece and I both agreed...the award of the stadium was passed by bipartisan state congressional support and had NOTHING to do with Walker. That means people that think this IS about Walker are those mindless drooling idiots we talked about earlier. And since you 'liked' my homey Deuces post about it just being bipartisan corporate welfare....you are kinda painting YOURSELF with a rather unflattering brush...arent you?

Scott Walker has promised to sign the bill. Scott Walker has campaigned for the legislation. Scott Walker received a large campaign contribution from the people who will be benefiting from this corporate welfare. Just because it's bi-partisan doesn't mean Walker is above criticism. Are you perhaps unaware that Scott Walker is running for president and is thus receiving national criticism? If you want to point out which one of the Dems that approved this are trying to become president please name them.

Keep going. You covered every inch of you but that second coat needs some work.

This is funny. :lamo Anyone can take money from the public and use it to hire bureaucrats with big salaries, but what do they really produce? I mean, Kim Jong Un creates jobs, too, in Pyongyang, doesn't he? Is that why North Korea is so prosperous?

What does this partisan comment have to do with this thread?

Just asking, because I don't see any connection.

The connection is that every bill (which becomes law) must first get legislative approval and then be signed into law by the executive. Every federal spending bill must be signed into law by Obama just as every WI spending bill must be signed into law by Walker.

Re: After Massive Contribution To Scott Walker, NBA Owner Will Get $250 Million In Ta

Let's be clear, this is bipartisan legislation, and is very typical. This certainly could have happened before Citizens United. Cities and states lose their minds when it comes to sports teams.

That said, this certainly does clash with Walker's claims to oppose government spending and for fiscal responsibility, as the state will be paying for this for 20 years. And yes, the Milwaukee Bucks threw $200,000 at Walker, and it looks like they got a massive economic benefit in return. Even when we acknowledge that this is "government business as usual," I don't see how this looks good for Walker.

Plus, there is definitely some bipartisan opposition. The state & cities will spend around $400 million, at a time when they're cutting education / UW budgets. Quite a few people think this is inappropriate government spending.

Obama won't be running against Walker and Walker will never be President of the USA.

stadium spending is one of those things that you either love, or you detest

in a perfect world, the owner would fork over the 250 million and the city just reaps the benefits

but this is far from a perfect world

stadiums bring income into a city.....in some cases, a LOT of income

depending on the site where it is built, new other construction usually follows

restaurants, retail, etc....because stadiums bring people with money to spend

i know when DC built Nats park, it was the same hate/love relationship depending on the side of the aisle you sat on

But when you look at what improvements others have built around that stadium now.....it made one of the worst areas of DC actually one of the happening places

And then of course, there are always other uses for the stadiums.....shows, concerts, etc for when the team isnt playing

when cities are competing for sports franchises to come....sometimes you need to see all sides of the equation

does that mean i am for public financing 100%.....no

it depends on the circumstances, and the city.....and the revenue the team will bring in

Sometimes it's good, but often it's bad. More to the point, I don't see why billionaires need taxpayer handouts. It's up to the citizens who are paying for it, but from my perspective: The owners should pay for their own stadiums.

stadiums bring income into a city.....in some cases, a LOT of income
Not really. The economic impact is pretty slight.

- The Atlantic

The reality is that teams hold cities and states hostage. In this case, they also threw lots of money at politicians -- and what they spent on lobbying is a fraction of what they've received in taxpayer dollars.

There will be some spending on construction, but we could put that same money into more useful infrastructure spending like bridges. I also can't help but notice that at least some people who are pro-government-spending-on-stadiums are against spending on infrastructure...

restaurants, retail, etc....because stadiums bring people with money to spend
Any such effects are almost always very local, as in a block or two radius. In quite a few cases, even that doesn't exist -- e.g. there is nothing near Centurylink Field, it's an industrial district. Spending on arenas to stimulate local growth is, more often than not, ridiculously ineffective.

Not to mention that nowadays, most of that money gets spent inside the park. Care to guess how much a beer costs at Yankee Stadium? Or how much halfway decent seats cost? ;)

And then of course, there are always other uses for the stadiums.....shows, concerts, etc for when the team isnt playing
Or not.
