Will football ever be the same? I love John Madden, and am saddened to see him go.
John Madden Puts Down the Microphone
By Jeffrey Marcus
John Madden, the Hall of Fame coach and one of the most recognizable voices in sports broadcasting, has decided to put down his microphone.
NBC Sports Chairman Dick Ebersol announced today that Madden had decided to retire.
“It’s time,” said Madden in a statement released by NBC Sports. “I’m 73 years old. My 50th wedding anniversary is this fall. I have two great sons and their families and my five grandchildren are at an age now when they know when I’m home and, more importantly, when I’m not.”
Madden, who has been an N.F.L. broadcaster for 30 years, was an analyst for “NBC Sunday Night Football” since 2006. Before that, Madden provided analysis and commentary for Fox and CBS, where he had a long-running partnership with Pat Summerall. He jumped to ABC to do Monday Night Football Broadcasts before moving to NBC in 2006. His last game was Super Bowl XLIII on Feb. 1 in Tampa when the Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Arizona Cardinals, 27-23.
As a coach, he led the Oakland Raiders to the Super Bowl XI title in 1977. His name is also associated with the most popular sports video game produced by EA Sports, and his visage used to grace the cover of the Madden NFL Football.
