If you lived in a 3 story apartment building with an elevator, which floor would you prefer to live in? I expect most people would pick either the 3rd, or even the 1st, but I believe the 2nd is the best for various reasons.

- Has less of a chance of dealing with roofing issues compared to the 3rd floor. Also, MUCH less hot in the summer, can save money on AC.
- Closer to the bottom floor than the third floor, which makes taking the stairs or even the elevator less of a pain in the ass, especially when you are carrying groceries, or taking your dogs out.
- More safe than the 1st floor, less chance of theft.
- More privacy than the 1st floor, and still high enough to have a nice view.
- if the elevator goes down, you only have one flight of stairs to deal with, as opposed to the 3rd floor.
- in case of an emergency, you can get down quicker on the 2nd floor compared to the 3rd floor.

Worst thing is probably the noise, but then again that entirely depends on your neighbors. One benefit the first floor has is they aren't above anyone.

With an elevator, top floor. Without an elevator, first floor. My second least favorite thing about living in apartments was always the noisy neighbors. Even when they weren't being unreasonably loud I could often hear them. And the last time I had someone living above me I always heard them walking around and chairs being slid around. The only think I disliked more was in the previous apartment when I had to walk up three floors every time I entered my apartment. No elevators.

However, I never even considered the possibility of having a lower electric bill. Makes sense since your apartment would be sandwiched between two other apartments using their own heaters/ACs. But I would prefer a larger electric bill than dealing with the noise.

I prefer living in a small town that doesn't have 3 story apartment buildings.

For me it would always be building specific . .

1.) as for my experience ive seen more people have "ceiling issues" because of plumping problems way more than i have ever heard of roof problems. Could be a location thing but roofs get inspected and pluming is hidden.
2.) when only dealing with 3 floors i never found this an issue
3.) never seen this as an issue either. It the building is secure its secure if its not then its not . . if theft is present ive never seen it be more present on any floor because of the floor number.
4.) privacy? again this would vary greatly building by building . . .
5.) see #2
6.) again IMO when dealing with only 3 floors i dont see this as an issue really and other exit methods should ALWAYS be looked into and practiced.

Just my 2 cents
again for me it remains building specific

When I was but a lad, I served newspapersin a medium sized city. Apartment buildings were easy with many subscribers in a tight group. The one thing that I still remember them were the smells. General mustiness and the lingering smells of various ethnic cuisines. Not good or bad, but very distinct.

i would want the apartment that shares walls with the fewest mother****ers. in grad school, i had a two story apartment that was at the end of the building. my friend and i made the second bedroom into an awesome studio, and we recorded many songs at all hours of the night. i miss that place. i currently live in a townhome, which is sort of an expanded version of that. when i'm in town, i sometimes drive by the old place to nostalgia.

3rd Floor...hopefully the view's better.

First floor end unit. Easier to move out and least noise from neighboring units/hallways. Elevators do not work in case of fire. Many apartments do not have adequate fire breaks between units - often none separating the "attic" area under pitched roofs. If theft is an issue then don't live there.

3rd. I couldn't imagine having neighbors above me and below me.

I would never live in an apartment with people both above and below.

This poll is actually a silly. Only those with medical problems would choose the ground floor and no one would choose the second.

A three story building has four floors. Ground, one two and three. ;) Maintenance of the building, including the roof issues, would be shared by all residents.

I vote apartments suck. The other votes are for ****y, ****tier and ****iest.

Sounds nice. Do you have an ice cream shop? That is really important.

No, but we have a small shop that serves really good espresso.

That qualifies as a city where I'm from. :2razz:

Well, we call ourselves a city, but the real city is nearby...so I call it a small town.

A good ice cream shop is a must for any town - large or small. There is no substitute.

But then I never have drunk coffee - of any kind in all my nearly 70 years. Lots of milk shakes however.

Not always the case.

you'd be surprised.

I voted apartments suck.... and they especially suck when it comes to moving in/out - try carrying big items (sofa, dressser, table) up a typically narrow apartment stairway and you'll understand what I'm talking about. Of course, having a balcony where you can hoist big items up and bring them inside eases the problem a lot. So that's a factor.... and if you like to BBQ, balconies are handy too. Climate is another factor.... if you live in a cold place, being on the third floor and having the people below you heat your apartment can save you a lot on your heating bills.

So, all in all, apartments suck.... but if they're where you are, I'd take the 3rd floor. But I don't live in Florida or Arizona.... I think I might want a nice, cool basement in the summer if I did.

Apartments suck. But, for participation purposes, I voted 3rd floor. Less noise.

When I rent hotel rooms, I always take the top floor when available.

seems to be being on the 2nd floor is more beneficial here. Heat coming from the top and bottom.

You're not going to get much heat from the top... it tends to rise. To me, being on the second floor you get all of the worst features of the 1st and 3rd floors, but none of the benefits.
