This is hilarious. Take the time to read some of the comments within the borders of the states:

"These borders are way too straight."

"Not racism or incest."

"New Jersey, which is nothing like Old Jersey."

"The Middle Bit."

"Indiana, Indiana, Indiana, Indiana, Indiana, Illinois, Also Illnois, Maybe Illinois too."

"Hawaii." ("I'm great, thanks for asking!")

"Lot's of racism, and then there's Austin."

  Some pretty good ones in there.

my favorite is the one where they just called like 10 Midwestern states "the middle bit" thats how i feel too

I know. One in there, around Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, etc - was like, "Does anybody know this stuff?"

Most kids in the U.S. can't name all 50 States, or even most of them.

Quite a few American adults would have the same problem.

Yes, you are right, but this is supposed to be comical - not a statement on the educational system in the States.

Laugh, OK? LAUGH? It's a FUNNY.

What?? YOU don't think it's funny American's would have as much trouble with the map? I think it's HILARIOUS.....:lamo

Florida is a big holiday/second home destination, everybody got that!

I'd love to see Americans try this one on for size!

I noticed alot of people got Florida, Texas and California.

Those states are also top European vacation destinations, to wit:

California -- cold sandy beaches, surfing, Yosemite, mountains, Disneyland, movie campuses, cable cars, seafood.

Florida -- warm sandy beaches, Disneyworld, easy scuba in the Keys, snorkeling, skin diving, seafood.

Texas -- I really don't get why anyone would visit Texas but many Europeans do.

i know scotland wales and london i know the southwest is filled with pirates but thats about it

I actually think thats the first time ive seen the word "leics" in print

It's short for Leicestershire.

It's short for Leicestershire.

yeah that didn't help me recognize it lol

too be fair the UK doesn't even fit into 1/3rd of "the middle bit"....... it would be like me expecting you too name every city, town, and suburb in america

Are you kidding? I could do that in 6th grade (and so could the rest of my class). If I couldn't have also pointed out every country on every continent, I wouldn't have graduated from high school! Fair enough, half those countries either don't exist or are called something else now, but still, geography is pretty basic stuff.

Well, if your going to break a country down into counties, that's a whole different ballgame!

And I can get 49 more like that!!

That's not really the point DiAnna - the OP was concerned with how little Brits know about the social geography of the United States. Apart from the fact that 15 people is hardly a representative sample of an United Kingdom, I suspect what Gardener was implicitly demonstrating, was the unlikelihood of many Americans being able to name and place the counties of Great Britain.

Both situations are to be expected, as few of us are familiar with the subdivisions of a foreign country, and there is no pressing reason as to why we should be interested therein.

Re-read the OP. She was not the least bit "concerned" and posted this only because of the clever and humorous comments made on the map. And my point in posting a map of a single state's counties was also a joke, showing that probably nobody on the planet, including Californians themselves, could memorize that bit of cluttered minutia. Please don't ruin Super's thread; she meant us to have fun with it.

LOL

Heck, I don't know 3/4 of the counties in my own state - and I've lived there nigh on 55 years. :)

I'm surprised to see that so many of them can't identify New York. You'd think that'd be one of the easy ones, along with Florida, California, and Texas.
