Senate Republicans on Tuesday afternoon rejected a Democratic proposal to move forward with a bill renewing an extension of unemployment benefits for the long-term jobless. It was undoubtedly bad news for out-of-work Americans who rely on those benefits to meet basic living expenses. But there’s another class of people who will surely be upset as well - the fraudsters who bleed the program of more than $1 billion every year.

U.S. taxpayers lost $1.17 billion to unemployment insurance fraud between July 2012 and June 2013, according to data gathered by the Department of Labor. Half of those losses came from just 10 states, which paid out $586 million in fraudulent claims. Unemployment insurance payouts for the 12-month period totaled $40.7 billion. Fraudulent payouts as a portion of that were 2.88 percent.

Of the 10 states with the largest fraud rates, only California has a congressional delegation that is mostly Democratic. Nevada’s delegation is evenly split along party lines, and the remaining eight are dominated by Republicans by a factor of nearly 3-to-1.

Here are this year’s entrants to the Unemployment Insurance Fraud Hall of Shame:

Rank State Fraud Rate Fraudulent Payments (m)
1 Louisiana 7.01% $14.4
2 South Dakota 6.37% $2.1
3 Mississippi 6.33% $10.9
4 Arizona 5.86% $21.6
5 Nevada 5.80% $26.4
6 Arkansas 5.72% $19.2
7 South Carolina 5.68% $14.8
8 Pennsylvania 5.63% $157.9
9 California 4.83% $311.0
10 Idaho 4.44% $7.1

It's good to know that at least the DOL has estimated statistics. I'd venture to say these numbers err on the low side.

Yeah and that was for just one year under Obama.....huh?

Wonder if those were the Republicans that broke ranks to vote with the Dems on the UB Assistance.

Whom do you imply?

Why is Mississipi always involved in either fraud, backthinking, lay people, etc with these news?

I would assume, you are most probably right. That would be in the nature of things.

The Republicans DDD.....I don't have an answer for ya on that one.

I'd venture to say they're overestimating.

Fraud creates jobs.

Edit: Murder creates jobs, too. What we need are more murderous frauds.

Mississippi has a very long history of poor education systems, poverty, fraud and cronyism etc in their politics, and poor performance in many other social/political factors. Bobby Jendal is doing a lot to change Louisiana and Brad Henry changed a lot in two terms in Oklahoma, two other states that used to be constantly at the bottom with Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas and a few others. A Jendal or Henry is not currently available, that I know of, to Mississippi to turn them around. So you will probably see them show up at or near the bottom on a lot of things. Even with improvements, Louisiana still has a long way to climb.

Most of the states listed have had a fairly long history of poor political performance. Large portions of their populations are poverty stricken and reliant upon federal and state support systems.

Wow if you add the other 9 together they are only a little more than California. I know where I'd START fighting fraud!

The Confederate states (with the exception of Texas, which is becoming more urban, educated, wealthy, and liberal) are consistently among those that are the poorest in the nation, use the most welfare, contribute the least in federal money, and are the least solvent. Why they are bastions of a political ideology that would most punish them for this is certainly puzzling.

It has always seemed strange to me how much vitriol people reserve for benefit fraudsters while giving corporate fraudsters a much easier ride. $1 billion dollars a year on benefit fraud, $337 billion in corporate tax avoidance. Go figure.

How do they know the payments were fraudulent? I would like to know if they went after the people that filed the fraudulent claims to get the money back.

Why they are bastions of a political ideology that would most punish them for this is certainly puzzling.

They have only changed to the new "ideology" in the last few decades and more slowly than Texas did. All of them were very staunch Democrats until the start of their break with that party starting around the time of Kennedy. They have been slower than Texas at recovering from nearly a century of leftist thinking.

Why they are bastions of a political ideology that would most punish them for this is certainly puzzling.

I'm reminded of a Ronnie James Dio song...

They say that life's a carousel
Spinning fast, you've got to ride it well
The world is full of Kings and Queens
Who blind your eyes then steal your dreams
...it's Heaven and Hell, oh well

And they'll tell you black is really white
The moon is just the sun at night
And when you walk their golden halls
You get to keep the gold that falls
It's Heaven and Hell

No no fool, fool!

All of them were very staunch Democrats until the start of their break with that party starting around the time of Kennedy. They have been slower than Texas at recovering from nearly a century of leftist thinking.

You do know that despite the changing stances of parties, the same weak central government, socially repressive, aristocratic ideologies that currently plague the Confederate states has been doing so for two centuries. There is nothing at all leftist in the mentalities of plantations and Jim Crow.

The Republicans of Lincoln were liberals. The Democrats before Wilson were the Jeffersonian Anti-Federalists. Modern Republicans denounce Lincoln as a states rights destroying tyrant all the time. Even though parties change, the ideologies don't. Urban, northern, liberal, federalists have produced more prosperity and every single advancement in social equality in the history of this country. Rural, southern, conservative, anti-federalists have produced a poorer, more oppressive culture. Much as you'd like to pretend otherwise, there isn't very much for conservative culture to be proud of.

How do they know the payments were fraudulent? I would like to know if they went after the people that filed the fraudulent claims to get the money back.

Indeed. If they can come up with such precise figures, why don't they actually do something about it?

I think it's 100% bull****.

North Luthorville or Lex Luthorville?

I think unemployment fraud is not a great concern of Lex Luthorville. They're a bit more focused on trying to implement registration laws for doomsday devices, but much resistance is coming from the NRA.

I think it's 100% bull****.

I think it is the same as saying how many illegal aliens are in the country.

It is impossible to know.

We sure would be in better shape if we just stopped throwing the money around like beads at Mardi Gras!
