Why wasn't abortion and "women's reproductive rights" more important to voters?

Looking back at the campaigns, election and everything in between, why do you think abortion wasn't more important to voters?

It's the Economy.

No. The economy is good.

It was probably immigration. And a foolish connection between them "immigration, therefore bad economy."

You are going to suffer horribly, when Trump's stupid policies deliver inflation and recession. You're going to bleat something about "Biden did this" ... for a while. Then you're going to admit it's all Trump's fault.

You'll be a Democrats voter, just a few years from now.

I think most women don't think they will need an abortion. So it doesn't bother them much, to fly to an abortion state.

If they actually do need an abortion, the "inconvenience" might actually be quite onerous. They might need to tell their employer, and they might get fired. They might not be able to afford transport to another state, or the cost of an overnight stay. People generally underestimate the cost of something they think is unlikely to happen.

But it does happen, and it will happen to some women. It will become a bigger issue, as time goes by.

Because people have other real life issues and their own problems they have to vote on and can't always do things for other people. Because its not the responsibility of others to solve people's problems. Because its not the most important issue in America by any means

Because people go shopping for food far more often than getting an abortion. Despite the supreme court ruling the number of abortions went up.

No, the reason for the results is because Harris is a woman. Americans will NOT elect a woman to the presidency - period. This cuts across party lines, genders, races, and cultures in the U.S. This election proved it.

Abortion, the economy, civil rights, democracy, foreign policy, nuclear war, all irrelevant if there is a woman on one of the tickets.

The sooner we accept this, the sooner we can get on with our lives.

I agree with you that it's because it doesn't affect as many people. The economy, however, affects everyone. The uncontrolled illegal immigration issue is also a huge problem in many places.

People tend to think "it can't happen to me."

I disagree. It's just that the two women who have been the nominees have been incredibly unlikable.

Curious: would you have voted for a Republican woman for President?

Yet a boon to the nation. Go figure.

How was Harris unlikable?

Republicans rejected Haley. Unlikable too?

If she was the only female candidate? Probably. I have wanted to see a female in the Oval Office for most of my adult life. Unfortunately, we will never overcome the misogyny that is deep rooted throughout this society. We as a society view women as weak and stupid.

because its a States rights issue now vs Federal

Roe is dead - every state can vote abortion the way they want to and people know it

this "control women" fear mongering that Democrats have kept us has failed bigly - women aren't stupid regardless of what Cuban says or Trash regardless of what Biden says

abortion isn't an issue that Democrats can exploit anymore

It's a State issue now, remember? I suspect it will make a difference is State Legislature elections, but maybe not, because abortion is still available.

As a woman, I disagree with your last statement.

I think it's strange to vote for someone simply based on if they have a vagina or a penis.

Because Dobbs (correctly) made it a state issue, not a federal issue, so it's a far less important matter when it comes to choosing people for federal office.

Largely because it’s become a state government matter.

There is undoubtedly a "use by date" on this rationale.

The Republican Study Committee budget:
  • Supports eliminating reproductive freedom for all women in every state and puts IVF treatment squarely on the chopping block through House Republicans’ support for the Life at Conception Act.
  • Endorses banning mifepristone – an FDA-approved, safe and effective medication that has been on the market for more than 20 years.
  • Supports rolling back policies that help ensure our Nation’s veterans have access to abortion care when their health or lives are at risk or in cases of rape or incest.
  • Guts funding for contraception—which is supported by the vast majority of Americans on both sides of the aisle—for low-income and uninsured women. This would further erode access to essential health care, from cancer screening to primary care, at a time when state abortion bans have already forced health clinics that provide contraception and other critical health services to close.
If House Republicans get their way, all of these proposals would become the law of the land.

You think Republicans are content to leave this as a state issue?

Once they strip you of a right, it's foolish to think they'll simply stop.

Pro-choice voters for Trump may well end up feeling a lot like the Muslim voters in another thread.

Disagree all you want. It is fact. U.S. society view women as weak and stupid. While you and I may disagree with that view, society as a whole believe it.

You think it is strange? I suggest you read up on the history of the women's suffrage movement. Women were literally physically beaten in the streets for decades and arrested by men for having the audacity to even suggest they be allowed to vote, let alone hold office. We have not come that far. There were pols as recent as this past election who suggested women ought not be allowed to vote.

Unwanted babies ultimately do affect everyone. Conservatives are too short-sighted or too worried about controlling women to acknowledge that.
