Why I Love EVE

The economics of EVE and the effects of Unholy Rage.

Why hasn't cartelization destroyed the economy in EVE anyways? Do the devs have some kind of trust busting measure or something?

No. The problem is that every person is an entity that can act independently and in their own interest (you're not dependent on the corp to get you that new ship, it might take longer, but not by much.) As a result, large groups of people can be quite volatile in the long-run (such as that executive betraying BoB) and large groups fall apart.

Then throw in a healthy dose of back-stabbing and treason and you have EVE :) .

Partially because the economy is so vast and most bigger corps have their own sort of "in house" production system for corp members so the open market is reserved, generally, for larger scale orders of raw materials and components.

It's extremely difficult to shake the EVE economy. I've read several accounts of people trying to cause a deliberate upset but the market absorbed it readily.

What's interesting is ships like the Exhumers, specifically the Hulk, I would argue have had a greater impact on EVE than any other ship. For a while, mining barges and battleships were the top of the tree for mining. But when Hulks came out, coupling them with mining laser upgrades and fleeting them, you could send your production of raw materials up dramatically. The mining corp I was part of when the Exhumers came out saw our ore income increase by about 3-400% IIRC.

Sad thing is, that meant mineral prices crashed and cost for most other goods has also sunk.

Yeah but surely there are means by which to sustain these relationships through a greater incentive to cartelize and combine than to cheat one another out. I mean look at the development of monopoly in the beginning of the 20th century when there was little to no regulation on these things.

I started eve when it first launched, I used to mine in Period Basis with a Megathron and we had to haul that crap 20 jumps one way but it was still worth it over common minerals/ores.

What do you do as your main job?

There are alliances which is basically groups of corps coming together under one banner which can often create mini-cartels, but the sheer size of EVE really makes it difficult for there to be any one dominant cartel.

It's an example of Capitalism/Libertarian Socialism. ;)
I would say more Anachro-Capitalism.

Now common ores are mined only for production use. More efficient refining methods and more missions have supplemented mining as a way to get minerals so the prices dropped even further.

A little of everything, but mainly heavy industry; manufacturing and mining

I would say more Anachro-Capitalism.

The reason I say that is because of the corp structure.
It represents a type of voluntary socialism that Libertarian Socialist talk about.

I just stopped my accounts about 2 months ago.
Taking a break to save money for a little while.
My main is under the same name here though.

My kind of guy, I like to do that and am gearing up for a POS and capital ship parts.
I'm trying to branch out into pvp too.

I have almost literally never seen them.

I would estimate that over 90% of my interaction with other players is clicking "No" to blind team invites, blind group invites, blind guild invites, blind duel invites, etc.

On the few occasions that I did decide to try a group, it was always the same. There would be virtually no communication, no attempt at planning. Trying to do so was a waste of time because no matter what, it would end up with a part of the group charging into battle and leaving the others to try to catch up (or, more often, trying to save them).

There you go. A brief description of almost all of my interactions with others on MMOs.

Well there's your problem. Everyone hates Timmy the Timid Tanker.

Not really. Everyone acts within their own interests and if they gain in the short-term to the detriment of others in the long-term (even of their own long-term), to them, it's worth it. Then there are assholes who just wanna see your new carrier burn for lulz :) .

Players also come and go and there are shifts inside the game.
I mean look at the development of monopoly in the beginning of the 20th century when there was little to no regulation on these things.
It's not a very good comparison. In EVE, you don't have fields that yield you higher quality ore than other fields (such as farm-fields in comparison), plus the multitude of ore fields makes it difficult to take over any one area of production and control the resources from it (such as buying up most of the oil-wells or coal mines.)

And even if you could organize a crack team of players that dutifully mined every field in the game (which would make you a nice big target for other corps), you still can just a run missions, take the loot and refine it.

Lastly, you can't make people come out there and play the game as if it were their job, real life beckons :) .

Mmm....not specifically. Corps are more like guilds than collectives, at least the vast majority I've ever seen. Most members work for themselves but also work for the corp on the side in exchange for membership and assistance if they need it.

I would classify it more as anachro-capitalism because there genuinely are no rules; might makes right in the market system and there is no requirement to follow any sort of real regulations.

I've been taking a bit of a break of late to deal with RL stuff, but I've kept my skills training. Exhumers 5 :D

POSs are really the only way to go with production anymore. Any empire manufacturing slots are almost always backlogged for a month so if you're lucky enough to find a place with open production slots, you're ****ting in tall cotton. And forget about finding any open PE or ME research slots. In high-sec, I dont think there is a single ME/PE research slot open.

Just an info bump but EVE announced they are going to release planetary interaction with the next release.
Which is May 18th.

I may reactivate sooner than planned.

This will connect with CCPs upcoming MMOFPS, [ame=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dust_514]Dust 514 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame]. The interconnection between the two games is going to be somewhat novel and potentially fascinating.

I've been hibernating but I may jump the gun and go back.
Was working on getting capital ship part bpo's.

I don't want to miss out on getting a nice planet.

I'm not sure how many gamers we have here, but I play one online game specifically; EVE Online. I love the game for a lot of reasons but this has to be up there on the top 5.

If you dont play or are unfamiliar with EVE, CCP is the company that produces EVE. The people you see in the video is almost the entire CCP staff including much of the management.

It's great to see a company that doesn't take itself so seriously and acts as though they actually enjoy what they do :)

Ohhhhhh where should I START???
People that enjoy this music....... do you REALLLLLLY listen to the words?

Yes I've listened to the words. It's a fun song written by the staff of CCP. Granted it doesnt make much sense unless you actually PLAY the game, but it's still funny :)

I dont actually enjoy rap or hip-hop. This is an exception because it's funny and because of the people that wrote it.

My type of music is more...
