Post #76Well there is global interest in limiting the amount of nuclear weapons and weapon systems out there. The aggregation of these systems, particularly in State that have less than stable leadership, can lead to outcomes which negatively impacts far more than just the nation of interest.
On paper, it's because Iran agreed to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty which would forbid non-nuclear states from developing nuclear arms in most circumstances. A nation is free to enter into agreements like this, and then are held to the contract.
Fundamentally, if we're just going to talk on the side of sovereignty without any sort of treaty in place, then there's nothing that says that Iran can't have nukes. Iran is a sovereign nation and are free to create their rules, government, and defense as they see fit. If they want nukes, there's nothing fundamental to America or Europe that gives power over Iran to dictate the terms of their own governance and to forbid it. Which is why you typically want to deal with these sorts of things through diplomacy and treaty.
Please feel free to show the entire board how stupid I am by listing all of the attacks Iran has done. Please include dates as well.What!!!???

It brings up a legitimate argument that Iran may have in terms of having nukes as a deterrent. The US and Israel are nuclear powers with nuclear weapon systems, having nuclear powers continually attack and bomb your country is reason to claim that you need nuclear weapons as a deterrent against these attacks.I don't disagree with any of the above. But, I will ask this simple question... Would any of these attacks from the US and Israel have happened if Iran had nukes? If there are no attacks, doesn't that mean peace has been achieved?

On numerous occasions, Israel, with American weapons, has attacked and killed Iranians under the guise of self-preservation. Even after these unprovoked attacks, Iran has maintained a cool head and has taken every possible step to avoid war.
Now, in 2025, we have multiple attacks from the US and Israel against Iran, murdering civilians with the claim that Iran must never get their hands on a nuke. Why not? They haven't shown themselves to be warmongering in any way whatsoever. In fact, it's been the US and Israel who have shown themselves to be unworthy of having nukes, all the while telling us to fear the country that's been the victim of their aggression.

Iran is behind almost ALL of the fighting that has been done in the middle east for more than a decade and before that, they fought directly with Iraq for almost a decade.
