Why does the the nature of reality, this existence, or our place in the universe matter so much to most people? We seek religion, science, philosophy, existentialism, and a broad range of discussions to try and get to the bottom of it. Sometimes people are investigative and empirical about it, while others take a leap of faith; but either way, there is an insatiable inner desire to know one's place in this world.

My question for discussion is... why does it matter so much? Is it simply human curiosity, or is there a deeper need to have these questions answered?

Dunno.

There may be no difference.

I think it is the whole not knowing what our purpose in life is that drives us to search for it. I can't speak for anyone else, but it sometimes drives me a little crazy not knowing the answer. If their is no purpose, then why bother continuing in this existence? I guess it gives a reason to continue.

Tiger got to hunt, bird got to fly;
Man got to sit and wonder, 'Why, why, why?'
Tiger got to sleep, bird got to land;
Man got to tell himself he understand.

If you weren't a sentient being, I suspect you wouldn't be able to even ponder this question, much less ask it.

Well, the computer I'm posting this on is kind of nice.

Because we all have an instinctive awareness that there is more to life than animalistic survival.

I think Ikari caught the gist of it :D

Our ability to think and reason and question is what makes us human. It's our nature.

Because if we understand we have a more sense of control, thus lowering fear.

How about some quotes:
1) If you don't know where you are going, you might wind up someplace else.
2) knowing is half the battle.
3) the unexamined life is not worth living.
4) Knowledge is love and light and vision.
5) Ignorance, the root and stem of all evil.

Once you discover the truth, it doesn't matter so much, back to square one. Smell the roses, the rest stinks.

Learning about the nature of the universe allows us not only to find our place in it, but to modify our place in it, if we don't like what we find. We find ourselves vulnerable to disease and injury, so we learn about how disease and injury work, and then we can make ourselves less vulnerable.

as a fact of evolution,we are distinguished from animals in terms of intelligence and we begin to gain a consciousness.this is what makes us a human.we are aware of our existence and know that we will die one day.we question the facts of our lives in this world.because we are human.

I think people have a natural curiosity to attempt to understand the world around them. Understanding one's purpose is a far more complex.

To me? It doesn't. It's just that I'm here, and I find gaining knowledge enjoyable, so I may as well.

My place in the world is whatever I designate it to be. I have no higher importance. No one does. Ultimately, humans only matter to other humans. But I'm here, and I might as well designate a place for myself.

I think it depends on the person. I personally am just very curious and want to know everything about reality. Others definitely have a deeper need to find purpose and 'meaning' to life beyond the world that is in front of them. I don't think there is necessarily a single explanations for "why it matters" that's true for the entire human species.

The "why" is different for everyone.

When one understands themselves inside out better than others define them ouside in, they aren't fooled as easy or find a need to believe they wouldn't exist without some relaity directing what they are allowed to think of themselves or everything else balancing in behind of each person's eyes and between their ears the same way with different perceptions within eqch unique compounded result.

I found the idea of God/Allah/Karma/eternity is the total sum of what now remains balanced within here being what is going on now. This is so humbling to where I understand life works with or without anything I succeed in or fail at attempting.

To know I am not responsible to rescue humanity or save the human species from self extinction is mind expanding over everything I learned existentially through comparative theoretical and theological facts written about in literature of fiction and speculation.

See the absolutes theory and theology both deny self evident things exist other than death and taxes.
