In my opinion, this is much worse than what Donald Sterling said. Yet, we've heard NOTHING about it. I looked around on this site for this, found nothing. I actually like Shaq a lot. I think he and Barkley are hilarious on Inside the NBA on TNT. But this is bad for a grown man to do. This is stuff mean 5th grade kids do to each other. Yet, we've heard nothing. Shaq was on air last night and again tonight. No sponsors have boycotted TNT. Shaq hasn't lost any endorsements. No celebrity has gone after him. Nothing.

The bad part is, he wasn't the only one. Trey Burke and Waka Flocka (who?) also jumped in on it.
Shaq under fire for mocking disabled fan’s selfie | New York Post

And yet, there is no outrage.

I just read this. How disgusting and pathetic. Shaq has everything. He wants for nothing but he had denigrate a stranger. Pig.

Yet, we've heard NOTHING about it.

Oh, oh, I know!!!

It's because bad stuff by whites is being sensationalized while bad things by blacks is being covered up by the Jewish media in its attempt to facilitate the secret race war being waged by blacks against whites!

Right?

Wake up white people!!

I agree that that shows exceptionally bad taste. A good reason not to want to have anything to do with the man. An outrage? Do you really think so?

That's pretty bad when a famous millionaire has nothing better to do than make fun of a guy with a genetic disorder.
Maybe all the press will help Jahmel get his "Hug don't Judge" program off the ground... I like his positive attitude...

Did he say not to take pics with disabled people? No.
Did he say not to bring disabled people to his events? No.

He made fun of a disabled person. Not a nice thing to do.

Did he apologize? Yes.

the former NBA player announced the apology in a Twitter message Tuesday.

Made a new friend today when I called and apologized to Jahmel Binion. Great dude,” the tweet said.

O’Neal followed up Wednesday with a tweet that said: “Had the opportunity to talk to Jahmel Binion yesterday and apologize about the post on IG!”

So, he did something insensitive. Something we've all done in moments of indiscretion. He apologized for it.

This is nothing compared to what Sterling did. And Sterling didn't apologize.

Let's see... fake outrage presented for the purpose of pushing the "race war covered up by Jewish media" routine? Yep.

Instagram...isn't that what got Donald Sterling in trouble?

Instacareerdestroyer.

Well, the answer to the OP question has now been answered.

You know, if insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result, then a necessary corollary would be that insanity is also looking at two different things and expecting them to be the same.

Good job trying to excuse one guy being a douche by showing another guy being a douche. Maybe we should just all be douches and then no one can complain, right?

This is NOTHING compared to what Sterling did. Every single one of us has made fun of a disability before. Very few of us, and we know who those are, have ever suggested excluding blacks from pictures and events.

Shaq apologized to the guy personally.

This is a non-story. Trying to pretend it compares to racism is stupid.

Redress, my apologies for a lack luster response. I felt horrible for the young man being attacked and I'm on the road, and really tired, so I gave into emotion.

They're about the same... in level of importance.

Its tasteless and awful, but it's not worse than what Donald Sterling said.

I did not consider your post to be in any way bad, or lacking. Quite good in fact.

Alright then! I'm so worn out, I wasn't sure. Thank you!

I saved my Shaq outrage for Shaq-Fu 2. Last time it was Kazaam.

No, but really, while it was stupid and cruel of him, I have to say that disorders and disability awareness requires just that: awareness. I am pretty certain Shaq had no idea about the man's disorder. Unless the photo was somehow tagged or given a prior explanation of the man's disorder (which would not make sense for the guy to do so anyway), most average people would not be aware. While there have been disabilities or disorders that have had a physical appearance that is more in the public consciousness (Down Syndrome, for instance), many others may not. To Shaq and many other people, I would not be surprised in the least had they thought that it was either a "pose" or a characteristic held by an average person. The "selfie" in of itself, did not carry the same perspective as the camera of the TV news crew, nor did it carry the explanation which followed. While it was mean spirited to crack jokes about a random person's selfie appearance (and should not be something a prominent figure does), I would hesitate to put it on the same level as a person who intentionally cracks a joke about someone knowing full-well what is going on with that person.

This is an educational experience that unfortunately had to occur at the expense of that man and perhaps those with a similar disability, but on some level, we have to acknowledge that this is an educational experience. The OP wants to use Sterling as an example of hypocrisy, and to a small extent, that should be acknowledged. That being said, the awareness surrounding African Americans is at a different level compared to that of those with Ectodermal Dysplasia. This makes it far more difficult to not only justify the conduct displayed by Sterling, but also the claims that those two men simply are "men of their time/era."

Likewise, to use this as a springboard for Sterling is disingenuous. We all know the media spotlight can only handle so many stories at one point in time. Would this have gotten as much outrage as Sterling? No, it would not have. More people care about race than disability, and even still, only certain types of disabilities at a specifically allowed time. But let's not get sanctimonious about this because you want the blacks to be held to the same standard as whites. Then it becomes discussing disability by proxy. It makes you look like you never gave a damn about the story in the first place and only want to score points in your race war.

Insensitively making fun of someone's looks is not the same as supporting racism. Shaq made no attempt to marginalize or exclude the disabled person. He made a mistake and apologized for it. That's not a big deal, it happens to all of us. Being a stinking racist is NOT something that happens to all of us.

There's no comparison between an unrepentant racist and an unfortunate joke that is apologized for.

So if a white guy insults blacks there should be a massive outrage over it but if a black guy insults a handicapped guy its OK?

This is what I mean about PC hypocrisy.

But you're wrong. There's a HUGE difference.

1. Racist, unrepentant, seeking to exclude blacks.
2. Made a 'retard joke', apologized.

You don't see the difference? The first is an affront to human decency and a major problem in society today. The second is a non-story.

You're clearly attempting to perpetuate the racist call-to-violence narrative about the media "sensationalizing white crime and hiding black crime". And you're using a non-story in attempt to apologize for a racist.

I go further. I call bs on this whole damn thread. There wouldn't be some contrived attempt at outrage here if the OP didn't perceive that somehow the "PC" crew or blacks were being hypocrites because of Sterling.

It was the typical routine:

1. Present a story about a black person doing something.
2. Claim the media ignores crimes/stuff by blacks.
3. Claim the media sensationalizes crimes/stuff by whites.

And we have it...

The Joo media is sensationalizing crimes by whites and hiding crimes by blacks in order to facilitate the secret race war being waged against whites.

The claim of media sensationalism is also a promise of fame to any white that chooses to take action against blacks.

Notice what the OP spent their time on. Was it the person with a disability? Nope. What was it about? Sterling's problems with race and the trouble that ensued thereafter.

And pretending that an off-hand, insensitive and unfortunate, JOKE (which was apologized for personally) is "much worse" than racism.

How ridiculous is that claim? How racist is that claim?

What did Shaq actually say because it is not in either story...
