I mean, other than, of course, taking God's name in vain, where does it say that we can't curse? And by curse, you know what I mean. No semantics, please.

It doesn't, exactly and precisely, in the sense you mean.

We are not supposed to swear oaths... in recent years I've wondered if that also includes the pledge of allegiance and military oaths, something rarely addressed from the pulpit... but also things like "I'll be damned if I'll ______!!" would fall under that.

Our society has decided some words are acceptable and others are not; this is mainly cultural.

However, one could argue "abstain from all appearance of evil" is such an admonition... though IMO that particular verse is too easily stretched all out of shape for my comfort...

But it is oddly applied. I know some of my co-religionists who will sometimes say "crap!" or "screw this!" who would get very upset if I spoke the OTHER words that mean the exact same thing as those euphemisms they sometimes utter... :)

Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.

But why would they get upset? I mean, **** means the same thing as poop. Why is **** wrong and poop not?

Here you go!

What Does the Bible Say About Using Profanity?

And,

Profanity is the linguistic crutch of the inarticulate.

Yeah yeah yeah. Blah blah blah. Where does it say that the word f*** is wrong in the bible? That's what I'm getting it. There are certain words that society deems wrong that people say I should not say. My neighbor said s*** the other day, and my other neighbor, a very religious teenager, said that she needed Jesus. That, to me, would have been offensive, because I consider myself a good person, and a Christian, but I swear sometimes. Bible doesn't tell me not to. Only not to use God's name in vain.

Corrupting talk could mean anything. If I say mother****er in my home, it shouldn't be considered wrong, because it doesn't say in the Bible specifically not to say that word. Only nothing corrupting, which could mean anything.

Bull****. Profanity, used properly and sparingly, is a way to add emphasis to whatever you're saying.

Well, if profanity is one's legacy in life then so be it. A sharper wit doesn't need it.

It's cultural. Viktyr says the origins are a rejection of Germanic sounding words in favor of Norman sounding words, at least in English, or something like that.

Many churches cling to the definitions of "foul language" extant in the American Golden Age of the 1950s, though in modern times what actually constitutes "unacceptable" or "foul" language has become a lot more flexible in most venues.

Personally I think "Well isn't this some ****?" as being the modern equivalent of the 1950s "Well isn't this just a fine mess?"

You thought there wasn't anything in the Bible about that didn't you? LOL!

The Bible isn't a compendium of curse words. But they're like pornography. Sometimes it's hard to define but you know it when you hear it.

As for being a "good person," God sets the standard, not man. And he says all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God and need to repent (Luke 13:3). I don't think for the most part that repentance is in this generation's vocabulary.

But now ye also put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth--Colossians 3:8(KJV)

Here's the thing: Profanity is not the same as Obscenity.

Profanity is the misuse of words referring to holy things, such as using holy terms as part of curses. GD would be profanity.

Obscenity is entirely different. What is "obscene" is defined by the time and culture. For instance, Victorian society considered seeing a woman's ankles to be lewd or obscene. Obviously, that standard has changed, including in almost all churches.

Obscene words, ditto. Culturally defined. Really, there is nothing wrong with saying "I stepped in ****" if I did, indeed, step in some ****.... except that our society has deemed that word "obscene"... while "crap" is widely considered acceptable even though it means the same thing.

Bit stupid, isn't it?

I wonder what the curse words were back then in Aramaic?

Apparently "fool" ('raca') was considered very very bad for some reason. Other than that, no clue.

Now don't get me wrong... cleaning up your speech of those words considered "obscene" is not a BAD thing... far from it. One could certainly argue that cleaning up your speech is good to avoid being a "stumbling block" or "offending others with your liberty" as the Word says... but given that obscene words are culturally defined I don't consider it as huge of a deal as some do.

Actual profanity or blasphemy is a different and much more serious matter of course. You'll never hear GD come out of my mouth, and if I say Jesus I'm calling, not cussing.

But if I hit my thumb with a hammer then yeah, some culturally-proscribed obscenities may follow sometimes...

Not buying it. I mean - who started this? Obviously God didn't, nor did Jesus, or specifics would be mentioned in the Bible. I've read the Bible, almost cover to cover, and it's all about rules, and what you should and should not do. I'm certain that if there were issues with a certain word, it'd be in there.

Who decided that the word F*** is a bad word? Society did. And I don't give a **** about what society thinks about me or my behavior.

Yes. :) You are getting the point I'm making. The Bible doesn't give instances of obscene language because it wasn't invented back then. The first usage of the word f*** was somewhere in the 15th century. So some stuffy person decided that the word f*** was obscene. Why should I listen to them? I don't use obscene language around others (unless they deserve it LOL) but it shouldn't be considered a sin, or wrong, just because some person said that it was wrong. I don't live by people's rules. I live by God's rules.
