Some truly gave all. My sister Kelley spent countless hours of time on the telephone informing folks of the stakes and driving turnout. My wife Christina pulled endless late nights - and at least one all-nighter - preparing materials for Les Williams' campaign. Will Kirk, a true conservative hero in our county, also spent hours of time helping prepare what was actually a well-scripted event considering the huge crowds of 600 folks we had to deal with checking in. And my newer but very-valued friends Les and Sarah Williams absolutely poured their lives into this effort, giving up weeks' worth of salary to pursue a cause that involved nothing but sacrifice - No Power, no Money, just endless giving on behalf of others. It was a joy and an honor to be on the team with this kind of folks.
Now liberty-lovers in Campbell County have two choices - we can give in to the "unity" that the "unity crowd" suggests - that is, unilateral surrender of our values and our freedoms - or we can fight back. It will be much harder now; a whole lot more folks will have to approach the level of "giving all." Yet did not 200 years of freedom-fighters - from our Founding Fathers who challenged the most powerful nation in the world for freedom - to the Bedford Boys whose blood stained the shores of Omaha Beach - did they not give all, that we might know the freedom we have known? Is "all" too much to pay, to bequeath that freedom to our children? Is the hatred of those maddened by Power too much to face on behalf of others - and our children?
I submit it is not. Jesus calls us to "Occupy till I come," not to surrender. And my children still have to grow up in this country. As Nehemiah advises us, "Let us arise and build."
I have learned much about faith through this process. I HATE to lose. Yet I have learned that God is big enough to work through the losses as well as the victories. A mentor of mine, Pat McSweeney, has told me that "no fight honestly waged is ever truly lost." I believe him. Let us choose to treat the losses as "Victories on layaway," and come back stronger and more determined than ever.
"The Lord of Hosts is with us. The God of Jacob is our refuge." Win or lose. He will glorify Himself. Let us resolve to glorify Him by redoubling our efforts to reflect His Truth in the public square. Let us, more than ever, be salt and light in a dying, self-absorbed culture.
Perhaps the biggest lesson from tonight is the power of ONE. If only each of us could have invited just one more. It would have made all the difference...
And the biggest consolation from tonight is the absolute honor and privilege it was just to be one of you; each one gave and sacrificed in the cause of freedom. You are an inspiration to me, and "I thank my God upon every remembrance of you." Thank you, on behalf of my kids Luke, Melody, Michael and Autumn, for being one of the 240 most-invested folks in the entire county tonight, for their chance to know liberty. Thank you for having the courage to lead instead of follow; to stand for truth instead of letting evil have its way, to face what we saw tonight with courage instead of doing the easy thing and staying home, avoiding the conflict. Thank you for not taking the easy road. Thank you for avoiding the subtle trap of silent complicity. Thank you for paying a price. Thank you for standing for truth - just because it's true.
President Reagan said it beautifully. "You and I have a rendezvous with destiny. We will preserve for our children this, the last best hope of man on earth, or we will sentence them to take the first step into a thousand years of darkness. If we fail, at least let our children and our children's children say of us we justified our brief moment here. We did all that could be done."
My kids and I thank you. You "justified your moment" tonight. As we go forward, let us each resolve to do more- "all that could be done." Because freedom - because truth - because our duty to Someone and something beyond and higher than ourselves - calls us on.
Thank you to everyone who gave. The other 50,000 citizens of this county will not thank you as they should, but they should.
I owe you. My kids owe you. And your country owes you. God bless each one who "stood in the gap" tonight.
With you in the cause of freedom,
Rick Boyer
