Our presidential candidates take such a beating on the road to their final goal. what is the reasoning for that? i know that they may have views that one may not support. but i'm talking about the attacks on their personal and private lives during and before their campaign.

my point is that why should we care if Obama is Muslim or if the next person smoked weed in his childhood, or if someone did happen to employ illegal aliens unknowingly as they aren't a felon and have the best interests of the country in their heart they should be looked at strictly for their political views.

Because I believe that anyone that screwed over his "loved ones" the way Gingrich has in the past would have no problem screwing over anyone.

And nobody cares if someone smoked pot in college.

News sells. A finite number of monkeys (reporters) will dig up dirt because it sells the best. Besides, I think for the most part, the public doesn't care about the little stuff. But they certainly have a right to delve into character issues. Oh, and I would certainly care if Obama was Muslim. I would want every iota of his religious past dug up and exposed. Who wouldn't?

yes but why so angry about it?

I think a significant portion of the US population is addicted to the 'rush' provided by the fighting - in other words they are fighting just for fighting sake. What is sad is that whole radio stations and a goodly portion of what passes for legitimate media in the US feeds this addiction.

i find this upsetting i tend not to get angry over these things

The GOP is in an undeclared war with the media, a one-sided war. The media slants everything negative toward them, and rewards Obama and the democrats with praise every chance they get. It is an uphill battle to The White House at best. With the media digging in like they do, the trek uphill is like dragging an elephant (no pun intended) behind them.

Do you really think Obama is a Muslim?

Even if so, that really doesn't address why I care.

here is an Article for Salon.com that does answer your question...

but even simpler answer... Distraction from the real issues..all is game to keep you occupied with trivialities!

America’s election season degrades mainstream political discourse even beyond its usual lowly state. The worst attributes of our political culture — obsession with trivialities, the dominance of horserace “reporting,” and mindless partisan loyalties — become more pronounced than ever. Meanwhile, the actually consequential acts of the U.S. Government and the permanent power factions that control it — covert endless wars, consolidation of unchecked power, the rapid growth of the Surveillance State and the secrecy regime, massive inequalities in the legal system, continuous transfers of wealth from the disappearing middle class to large corporate conglomerates — drone on with even less attention paid than usual.

Because most of those policies are fully bipartisan in nature, the election season — in which only issues that bestow partisan advantage receive attention — places them even further outside the realm of mainstream debate and scrutiny. For that reason, America’s elections ironically serve to obsfuscate political reality even more than it usually is. Read on......

Because people care about those things in the elected officials who represent them.

But, then again, people can still vote for candidates despite such things.

And no elected official should ever be considered above criticism. Such criticism is a safeguard against tyranny.

You have to win the primary before you can run for president. There is no gentlemen's agreement to be nice to each other and may the nicest guy win. It is politics.

I'm curious...How exactly did Gingrich screw over his family?

The media is supposed to be the fourth estate...unfortunately for everyone, liberals and conservatives, moderates and centrists...that is no longer the case. Now the general media has become nothing more than a voice for the left.

Yeah, it's too bad that we don't have Fox News or Fox Business News on TV, and how we don't have Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, Lou Dobbs, Neal Boortz, Mark Levin, Dennis Miller, Laura Ingraham, Michael Savage, and G. Gordon Liddy on AM radio stations.

Oh my. The "leftist media" conspiracy card played again. lol

3/4 of all political talk radio is conservative. And they are also on FM in many areas. Not to mention the Murdoch empire doesn't end with just the FOX network. And the fact that there are loads upon loads of right wing newspapers. WSJ, New York Post, Boston Herald, Chicago Tribune... etc, etc.

It is too bad...and none of those you listed are with the MAINSTREAM media.

Yeah... the Dan Rather debacle was some fictional right wing plot. You libs do know what the mainstream media is ...right?

Well, I would think that any news network that flaunts Bill O'Reilly as the most watched news show in America would have to be considered mainstream.

Clearly you don't know much about that instance. Except what all those apparent non mainstream sources you listen to told you.
