What is a good reason that Confederate memorials should be on government land? [W:110

Denial is such an ugly thing, yet you are so good at it.

Stalin, and Saddam Huessein are not my heroes. I view Lenin as a highly controversial figure, but still wouldnt call him a "hero".

Is it so unreasonable to demand that memorials to traitors who killed a bunch of American soldiers in the course of a failed rebellion to protect their right to enslave people should not be present on government land? They should never have been there in the first place, but the whiniest losers in American history managed to subvert the maxim that history is written by the victors.

Granted, the end of reconstruction and the Jim Crow era would suggest that it's a bit ambiguous who won in the end. I'm surprised we haven't gotten around to removing all slave owning presidents from our currency, to be honest. It would be a good thing to remove those guys from our currency. It will, of course, ruffle many feathers. It'd be best done one at a time and not with the goal of replacing slave owners overtly stated.

I'll bet the NAACP would pay for the demolition. I bet they could raise the money to do so in about three seconds. ****, I'd contribute to a Kickstarter dedicated to knocking down monuments to warlords who worked for traitorous slavelords and killed a few hundred thousand American soldiers in the course of their failed rebellion.
maybe we should remove the Confederate memorials at Gettysburg..by this line of 'reasoning'

more dumb stuff. I can understand not wanting to fly the Confederate flag over a state capitol.
The US and state flag only should fly there,
and that's how it was up until it was decided to put up the Confederate flag ( when was that?)

But when we start erasing our heritage - when the Confederate soldiers are to be vilified, we have become intolerant..

I like this pic - 50 years after Gettysburg at Gettysburg. If the soldiers can shake hands and come toterms with the civil war
surely we can to.

I believe this is Cemetery Ridge -high point of the Confederacy

Some explanation of why Confederate soldiers are treated as American veterans from various acts of congress and what exists in the US code. Note, this source is not of my creation.

If they're American veterans, shouldn't an American flag fly over them?

"You people"? You mean those of us who support the concept of freedom of speech and don't think we should hide the more distasteful parts of our history away in museums some where? Or were you thinking of something else?

Oh look, it's another conservative who thinks "let's not fly traitors' flags over government buildings" attacks his "freedom of speech."

You can fly a traitors' flag all day if you want. Nobody is suggesting that become illegal. So, go on, whine more about your freedom of speech if you like. It's not under attack.

Avoiding the question as usual. At least you're consistent.

I wasn't avoiding the question. I was rejecting its phony premise.

Putting something in a museum doesn't hide history, I don't know where you got that ridiculous idea. And, again, your freedom to fly a flag on your property is not in question here. Have fun with your traitors' flag.

I'll answer that. I am a northerner whose family were abolitionists, whose inn was a waystation on the underground railroad into Canada. Whose relatives fought and died and were wounded in the Civil war fighting on the side of the North.
On a southern memorial?
I see no need to desecrate these mens graves, or memorials 160 years later. Very few of the men that fought for the south did so as slaveowners. True they supported the system of slavery.. but they fought for what they thought were their homes, their rights etc. And they fought with courage and sacrifice for each other which is what happens on the battlefield. If anything, these memorials are a good reminder of people fighting for the wrong reasons.

Memorial, or remembrance of the civil war.. is a very different thing than a CURRENT political building flying a confederate flag.

I wasn't avoiding the question.

Yeah, you were. But the continued yell of 'traitor' continues to let everyone know how little you know of history.

The only flag I fly is the US flag. Not sure why you think it's a traitor's flag, but I'm sure you have your reasons.

I think we should start with George Washington. He was a racist slave owner and everything from his portraits to removing him from the dollar bill is appropriate.::thumbs:

I think we should have a bonfire in front of the white house and start burning the books and pictures and everything else associated with slavery. We should burn every book that contains any politically incorrect word or phrase. Why stop with slavery?:lamo

That will surely end prejudice in this country and the unicorns can prance on the white house lawn in the new utopia.

I think we should take it down as well. It represented a country that supported slavery for almost 100 years. I would never own a flag that represented people who thought slavery was OK. I would never pledge allegiance to a flag that represented a country that believed in slavery. Only white supremest Nazi's would consider such an act. The politically correct people of this country deserves better.

The next thing I do will be to climb up on my roof and dive head first into my driveway for serving in our military and being willing to die defending such a vile thing.

Bad argument.

The American flag stands for lots of good things.

The Confederate flag stands for nothing but slavery, treason and white supremacy.

Holy ****ing **** with this leftwing "purge"... Are you for real?

Confederate Soldiers are American Veterans by Act of Congress | Veterans Today

I suppose you want to dig up these veterans from Arlington and dump their bodies into the ocean?

So you want to remove washington from the dollar bill, but not the flag he flew under?

If it is State land, it is the State's business.

Hold your breath. You are one one that did a drive by attempt at insult and offered zero content.

The Confederate flag stands for nothing but slavery, treason and white supremacy.

The ignorance above is stunning. Let's start with the fact that the flag being discussed is not the flag of the confederacy.
