If they had not killed apostates the religion would have died off long ago, and it is hard to decide when the only option is kill.

It is not cherry picking there are 109 verses that say kill unbelievers. And 97% of jihad verses are about violence. The cherry picking comes when you try to find something nice about non-Muslims.
