Seattle '''autonomous zone''' has armed guards, local businesses being threatened with extortion, police say | Fox News

Seattle police say they have received reports of armed guards and potential extortion in a self-declared autonomous zone that spans several blocks and includes a now-closed precinct.

“We’ve heard, anecdotally, reports of citizens and businesses being asked to pay a fee to operate within this area. This is the crime of extortion. If anyone has been subjected to this, we need them to call 911,” Assistant Chief of Police Deanna Nollette said on Wednesday.

Ah, but the argument will be that if it’s the police saying it, it must be a lie.

Hmm... which is it - the police have received such reports or they will only honor such reports if made via 911 calls?

Reminds me of when the Occupy Movement refused to allow Police into their areas, and then were astonished at the quickly-climbing number of rapes that occurred.

So many angles to discuss on this. Since police are socialist, would the right actually support their disbandment in preference of private protection services?

Does defunding equivocally mean no police? I'd say since it's a newer idea, it's open to discussion. Imo, keep a core of police to patrol and counter violent crime, and build more specialized units under different organizations for handling all the stuff that police arent well trained to do or dont want to do. Its unwise to have these poorly trained police forces that are thrown at everything from parking maid to hit and run to dealing with mentally I'll homeless. While they also have the tools and power to escalate any of these situations to the use of deadly force. It doesnt make sense. Limit the scope of officers that wield deadly force. Use alternative services as much as possible elsewhere. And for heavens sake fire the bad ones or the whole union goes bad. Everytime someone says "most are good" its followed by a silent lie of omission "but we hide and protect even the bad ones".

It will be chaos, and we all know it. Vigalante justice will result in some areas in other, extortion for "protection".
He since we are tire of Police violence and want to defund police I've a great idea.
Defund professional sports. I'm tired of hearing about domestic abuse, sexual abuse against women and often minors, drug sales, homicide, DUI homicide, murder, cospiracy to commit murder,, If we are tired of the minority of bad cops being enought to defund police, lets let the minority of bad apples in the pro sports world who make millions, be enough to defund pro sports. Take their millions and fix the problems.
List of professional sportspeople convicted of crimes - Wikipedia

And this is just one list and doesn't get to all of it. Some are minor of course but many are not.

It is pretty obvious what they are saying.

It's pretty obvious that they have made no such arrests as well. Sometimes you have to send in detectives to discover such things.

a useless argument not worth actually wasting time on.

Knowing the basic definition of words helps. Defund meand to stop giving money to. So the calls to defund the police mean that the police get no money.
if they have no money they can't very well police and no one is going to do the job without getting paid. In fact it is a crime in the US to make people work without paying them.

Well then the term is wrong for what I'd likely support. It could be a threat or a goal meant to bargain out somewhere in the middle. They are right to threaten the unions that are sickening themselves by protecting the bad cops.

Every time someone says "99% of them are good" the silent dishonesty by omission is "and those 99 enable the 1".

Crimes occurring and arrests for them being made are not mutually exclusive.

They are hearing and getting reports that doesn't mean they have made arrests yet.
They are encouraging people to call 911 if this happens.

SO yes they are mutually exclusive.

They can be getting reports of incidents but not making arrests.

He is also quite ignorant of how the vast majority of Police departments work, especially in the big cities. Most do have trained meter maids and officers specific to traffic enforcement. The rest he is basically making up as he goes along. About the only thing he got right was "fire the bad ones".

If there's no investigation, there's no credibility to the reports.

This is the barely coherent and grammatically inept speech of a man who desperately wants to be able to claim that he "cured coronavirus."

That's it, in a nutshell. When we do get a handle on this crisis, he wants to be able to pull out footage and declare "I called it! I said use this! I said try this! I told them to do this, it was my idea!" He's just doing it with lots of stupid stuff because he doesnt want to miss an opportunity. He's afraid 'the big one' will be mentioned and he wont get credit for it.

It's all about declaring himself the savior of the cv crisis and we'll hear all about it, esp in his campaign. (Which is basically each of his press briefings these days) --- Lursa

wrong. but that shouldn't surprise anyone.

Yes, that's a counter-argument

not saying anything is not a counter argument.

No it's not. A 2 year old can say 'na huh,' doesnt mean they've presented a counter argument. I do imagine the stamping of feet and pouting tho...did those accompany your response?

Ah, but the argument will be that if it’s the police saying it, it must be a lie.

The argument from whom, specifically? Seems like you're posting dishonest attacks on your political enemies in every single thread I open.

Nevermind how you'd say "anonymous source!" if it was negative of Trump, but here it's negative of what you think is some group on the left, so "anecdotal reports" from unidentified persons is fine.

then why did you make such a childish argument?

then why did you make such a childish argument?

If it was childish, why couldnt you articulate your counter argument?

Your "na huh" is basement level childish...you cant raise your game at all? Here on a discussion forum?

They've been lying their asses off nonstop since this began so...yeah...I'm going to have to look to a different source.

From a reporter's observations instead of Fox News or the police:

Inside Seattle’s ‘Autonomous Zone’: Trump Criticizes Mayor Durkan - The New York Times

Gee...no pictures of rioting or warlords terrorizing the locals.

And then the various posts by individuals claiming to be there saying that no, there isn't horrible stuff going on. Met with what? Met with DP Trumpist speculation that they must have been terrorized into saying that by warlords.

If reality does not conform to their "I hate librul" agenda, then they'll just invent a new reality.
