what comes to your mind if you think of the US?

The most free country in the world. The only country left that recognizes and respects the right to free speech, and the only country that trusts the people to own lots and lots of firearms.
Freedom Index ranking:
Switzerland 9.01
New Zealand 8.88
Denmark 8.83
Bunch of other countries including Canada...
US 8.39

California .... in German .. Kalifornien

We are all heirs to the Roman Empire.

Time to revisit Gibbon.

There's something chaotic in the air reminiscent of the last decades of the Roman Republic. Kid you not, the then Roman politicians took lawfaring to insane levels. The politician was immune from prosecutions while he held office. Once his term expired, it was open season. The Great Caesar was careful to secure himself a Proconsulship in Gauls after the end of his Consulship. This office also shielded him from prosecutions while he held it. And he held it for yeaaaars. Until he could hold it no longer. Then he crossed the Rubicon. And the rest is history.

Of the likes of billionaire slum lord Marcus Crassus, the hyper vindictive Lucius Cornelius Sulla, Julius Caesar, Gnaeus Pompey.... I often wonder which Trump is closest to.

Trump matches Sulla in vindictiveness. And in slum lord billionaire Marcus Crassus another match.

Marcus Crassus was into real estate and owned a lot of property. He also ran a fire fighting business. He stiffed those who dialed him in emergencies. You could pay top dollars. Crassus would offer to buy the burning property for peanuts. Or the owner could see a total loss as everything went up in flames.

None of them have true free speech, and none of them trust their citizens with firearms even close to the US.

This is "free speech" in Canada. This man published a cartoon:

And where every law is a blight on your freedom. Isn't that right, @aociswundumho?

Haaar! Not even in the top ten of the "most free"! The disconnect from reality is astounding.
