40 years ago today, one of the most legendary concerts in history took place-a concert that is often ranked the best of the 2000+ shows the Grateful Dead played over its 30 year lifespan. Barton Hall at Cornell-a field house for various athletic events was the site of this magical show. Still living in Ohio at the time, I missed this show but I saw the one 6 months later in New Haven that was reputedly almost as good and later I made the trek to Ithaca to see the GD play in BH a few years later
Nice pick. I feel like people who don't like the GD are missing out on a huge part of life.
I was wrong about the New haven concert. I could have sworn it was the fall of 77 when in reality it was actually about a year after the Barton Hall show. I know the fall of 78 the GD had another concert in NH but Jerry was sick. I think they played their last show in may of 81 at Barton Hall-after that it was usually Syracuse or Binghamton which were much bigger venues.
77 was a good year for the Dead. They had Keith Godchaux in their famously cursed keyboard player spot. I feel like, when listening to shows today on archive.org or just youtube nowadays.. that late 70s the magic was potent. I will always love the pigpen years. I love Easy Wind and his rendition of It Hurts Me Too. But, late 70s, their magic was in full effect. It depended on Jerry's health. And his battles and personal demons. But, this show especially stands out.. If anyone out there doesn't like the Dead after listening to this 5/8/77 then you'll just never get it.
They opened the New Haven show with Jack straw. one of my favs. The barton hall version of Row Jimmy Row and Morning Dew were magical. I saw them a couple times in the mid 80s in the east side of Cincinnati at "Riverbend" which was an open air covered pavilion. Not nearly as good as the stuff I saw in the late 70s and early 80s. I alway rated 77-78 as the best year with 72 a close second.
I was at this show. It's an imitation of the real thing. Furthur, which is Phil, Bobby and the DSO guy playing the Jerry. One of my favorite Dead songs, easily top 5 for me.. Wharf Rat.
that's my son's favorite. Jerry died 3 years before he was born but he bought the entire Barton Hall show and has lots of other downloads. Plus all my CDs and vinyls. I had a chance to see them last year with John Mayer (IIRC) but no Phil. I passed. My wife and son were out of town and I was pretty busy. Reports I got-I should have gone but I really liked jerry's voice and it was sort of like seeing the Clash after Mick got the boot.
