The WGA West is calling on Hollywood to consider not shooting films and TV shows in states that ban abortions. The move comes in the wake of a leaked draft opinion by a 5-4 majority of the Supreme Court that would overturn Roe v. Wade and let states decide whether to ban abortions.

“In light of the leaked Supreme Court draft opinion on abortion rights, we want to reaffirm our Guild’s commitment to fighting on our members’ behalf against inequality and discrimination,” the guild’s board of directors said in a statement. “Women’s rights are human rights, and any laws that ban or limit a woman’s right to choose are dangerous and set a precedent for further erosion of our collective civil rights. We call on our employers to consider the laws of each state when choosing production locations to ensure that our members will never be denied full access to reproductive healthcare.”

The statement was signed by WGA West president Meredith Stiehm; vice president Michele Mulroney; secretary-treasurer Betsy Thomas, and board members Liz Alper, Patti Carr, Robb Chavis, Marjorie David, Travis Donnelly, Ashley Gable, Dante W. Harper, Eric Haywood, Deric A. Hughes, E. Nicholas Mariani, Zoe Marshall, Dailyn Rodriguez, David Slack, Patric M. Verrone, and Nicole Yorkin.

Actors’ Equity Association, the national labor union representing more than 51,000 actors and stage managers in live theater, issued this statement on the leaked SCOTUS opinion Tuesday:

“Equity is appalled by the news that the federal rights enfranchised by the Supreme Court in 1973 may now be denied. Abortion is a necessary and often life-saving medical procedure that requires safe, legal and open access. This ruling would most acutely affect multiple communities that are already marginalized in America, leaving them to bear the brunt of the disastrous effect of the court’s action.

“This is also very much a workers’ issue. We stand in solidarity with health care workers, many of whom already risk assault for providing abortions and other reproductive services, and who stand to face more personal and legal danger in the light of this ruling. Furthermore, theatre is an industry in which it is notoriously difficult to support a family, and in which pregnancy discrimination is all too common. Reproductive choice is an indispensable tool in determining one’s own fate. Choosing when and how to have a child is not a luxury, it is a human right.

I thought boycotts weren't actually cancel culture? Which is it? Because if they are, then conservatives are right up there.

Maybe they should encourage the following of law and prosecution of criminals.
You can choose when to have a child and do it without killing a baby. Abstinence, birth control, being responsible about when and with who and keeping your zipper up.

The left can't control their emotions, urges, desires to shoplift, attack police, run from a traffic stop, shoot heroin, take out school loans, make stupid decisions that leave them homeless, etc, etc.

They just want someone else to pay for it or make the problem go way.

In this case, they'll kill an unborn baby just so their lifestyle isn't effected.

This is so true - as the last 6 1/2 years have proven - in spades, or should I say, in Trump.

Why we give these people any credence any more is worth asking. Their world views are so mucked up and twisted by bizarre and extremely radical ideologies - ideologies that have failed everywhere they've been implemented ('cept in totalitarian regimes, where their "success" is solely in keeping the dictatorship in power - and nothing else).

I should start a poll on whether or not you're a bot.

I'd like to see the names of actors who'll support that.
PUBLISH THEIR NAMES, PLEASE.

TRANSPARENCY.

Thereby, pro-lifers will know which films to boycott!

Smart actors know when enough to not openly take sides in such divisive issues.
They don't want to alienate supporters who don't share their views.

I suppose they haven't noticed the high-profile names of actors who were so vocally anti-Trump, and have tanked.

I'm still awed by Amy Schumer being reduced to tampon ads! Or, the string of flops for Jennifer lawrence.

Are you boycotting any films now? Because this position of theirs certainly wasn't in secret until now, that the majority of actors and actresses, pretty much most people in the film/entertainment industry, are prochoice.

"Majority," doesn't cut it.
I want names.

I don't mind actors having their views that aren't the same as mine.

But, I don't want them using their celebrity status/profession to promote theirs.
As one actor had diplomatically declined to comment on his position about something (a long time ago), he said, "I'm an actor. I don't do politics."
It's their choice however, should they want to use their profession - but, people like me can also choose to retaliate by targetting their profession.

Those who "boycott for conservatives" sure do have a ridiculously high and naive view of their own personal effect on others' careers or businesses.

Just because someone is not doing something at the moment or a business drops in earnings, even if they went under and you boycotted them, that does not mean you caused anything, particularly when there is evidence to the contrary.

My guess is that the rural south will wake up shortly and realize the full impact of what is happening. Give it time, it will sink in. It isn't just the inner city ladies who spread their legs.

I'm sure that they are not going to miss your patronage, as there are plenty more people who support them on this.

Don't worry though, I'm pretty sure there is already plenty of crossover when it comes to other boycotts those who are against these actors/actresses are already involved in.

It's a start. "The Walking Dead" comes to mind. I think they film in GA and they use locals as extras.

Medical decisions are NONE of your business..

Abortion is also an option and being responsible, especially when birth control fails. And there is no baby in an abortion.

Did everyone think there would not be economic fallout?

It's just common sense for actors to be diplomatic in the face of contentious issues.
Your profession relies heavily on the public.

If you alienate a good portion of that, it could hurt in the box office.

Clooney and Matt Damon, both flopped in the same movie in 2017!

Your Lifezette article is from 2018. Carrey has been in several films since then.

Hell you only used biased, conservative sources for this "evidence".

Scarlett Johansen in one of the highest grossing actors of last year and she is very outspoken about being against Trump. Chris Evans is pretty outspoken about his prochoice support.

Samuel L Jackson was the top paid actor of 2021.

Maybe this is okay with them. Maybe they have enough money. They certainly have a right to express their opinion just like you. Keep in mind correlation does not prove cause.

Aren't you promoting cancel culture here?
