Since we don't have much access to really good masks, an awful lot of people won't wear DIY or paper surgical masks because they don't like them and believe that it's a wasted effort. FALSE.

from DIY masks may not protect you from COVID-19. But here'''s why it'''s smart to wear one - ABC News

DIY masks may not protect YOU very much ( but might a little) but we are asked to wear them to protect others.

"In other words, wearing a cloth mask probably won't protect you. But that doesn't mean you should ignore the CDC's recommendation to wear one.

"The utility of a mask to inhibit what's going out is pretty good," Schaffner said.

inhibit what's going out = keeping your germs away from others and this is important because you may be infected and not know it.

But what if we want the freedumbz to get other people killed?

It's really important for people to understand exactly what you just said, unfortunately this message will never be clear in the minds of the majority of people that wear a protective mask. It's purpose is two-fold. #1 to protect others from you. #2 to get you to stop putting your fingers and hands to your mouth, nose and face because you may have the virus from contact with it on surfaces and transfer it directly to your respiratory system through your nose or mouth -- or even eyes.

I have seen many homemade face masks since everyone in my state that goes out among the public is required to wear one. I have seen many people mistakenly not cover their nose with the mask. The most original homemade mask was a very old man in the supermarket wearing a kitchen dish sponge for a mask attached with white shoelaces. I question the efficacy of a kitchen sponge but give him credit for the effort. It will catch droplets from his sneeze or cough and not infect others with it. I suppose it would be easy to clean too, just a few drops of Dawn dishwashing liquid would do it. At least he gets it.

I don't have many face masks in my possession and what I do have I share with my staff.

We have been using coffee filters, underneath our face masks, and it is surprisingly comfortable in as much as a face mask CAN be comfortable. That's just my opinion though.

It adds extra protection and instead of throwing away face masks, we just throw away coffee filters. I have a gazillion of them.

If you're keeping your distance, it's ok. Right?

Bra cups do the best job.

What are the rules in your area?

Ours say we can be outside without masks as long as there is that 6 foot distance.

What is your point?

The best type of filter recommended is HEPA vacuum bags made of polypropylene are the “gold standard,” face mask expert Juliana Sohn

It makes perfect sense to use a HEPA vacuum cleaner bag and they can be used more times than a coffee filter. Actually the effectiveness of this type of mask has been rated nearly as high for efficacy as an N95 mask. Of course the bags are easy to buy in someplace like Walmart or Home Depot.

I was really impressed with this guy who made a mask using a CPAP mask, he cut a HEPA vacuum cleaner bag with just a small piece to fit where the tubing usually goes. This is pretty brilliant for those who happen to have an extra CPAP mask hanging around the house. The best thing, the 'filter' can be easily replaced. The outside of the mask can simply be wiped inside and out with a Clorox wipe.

that's a great idea!

yeah, but in close places you can't stay far enough away, e.g. grocery store aisles
