Anyway, the book cited in the OP deals with the attitude of Orthodox Jews towards the Catholic church.

Israel comprises around 20 pct of orthodox Jews and only a part of those are ultra-orthodox. And not even all of those share into the hostility.

If the hostility mentioned were really official state policy, there wouldn't be any Christian churches in Israel, yet alone the various churches in Jerusalem paint a totally different picture.

IMHO, Christianity has been "weakened and watered down" because we live in an increasingly tolerant society. The reaction of the hard-right Bible Thumpers to this increasing acceptance to diversity is responsible for more and more young people turning away from hard-core religion altogether.
