Washington Post Cartoonist Quits After Jeff Bezos Cartoon Is Killed

Going after the owner was bound to have repercussions, even though I agree with others that the cartoon in question was absolutely 100% spot on.

When you 'buy' an electronic version of a book, for example? Can you quote that in the TOS, etc?
It is quite literally the first paragraph in the TOS.

1. Kindle Content License

Use of Kindle Content.
Kindle Content is licensed, not sold, to you by the Content Provider. Upon your download or access of Kindle Content and payment of any applicable fees (including applicable taxes), the Content Provider grants you subject to the terms of this Agreement, including without limitation those in “Changes to Service; Amendments” below, a non-exclusive right to view, use, and display such Kindle Content (for Subscription Content, only as long as you remain an active member of the underlying membership or subscription program), solely through Kindle Software or as otherwise permitted as part of the Service, solely on the number of Supported Devices specified in the Kindle Store, and solely for your personal, non-commercial use. Content Provider may include additional terms for use within its Kindle Content. Those terms will also apply, but this Agreement will govern in the event of a conflict. Some Kindle Content, such as interactive or highly formatted content, may not be available to you on all Kindle Software.”

Thanks. So "content provider" is the publisher, not Amazon. The license confers a right to view, use, etc that content. There is no end date on the license. (You dont have to subscribe to anything to own a Kindle and download e-books.) But it also seems the publishers can change their terms of agreement any time they want 🫤

You can download content to the Kindle and it cant be 'removed' by an outside party but if you have wi-fi turned on, they can just remove it in the background. Amazon does regular software updates to the Kindles that occur automatically when wi-fi is on.

So...Amazon, and possibly the govt...can hold our content hostage. Or just remove it from our access.

Maybe he should just, you know, lighten up. It makes him seem less defensive and sensitive that way.
There’s nothing in the OP that says Bezos was even aware of the cartoon. Regardless, unless you’re prepared to pack your stuff and go, it’s still bad form to create something disparaging of your boss. I’m not aware of a lot of companies that would accept or encourage that behavior.

No regular corporation would. Newspapers are held to a different standard when it comes to the editorial department.

No more space. In a 4 bedroom house with one person living in it. And that's what it took for me to buy a Kindle and how I buy all my fiction and most non-fiction now. Gotta say tho, I love it. I just bought a remote page turner 😁 So I can stay completely under the warm covers when I read my Kindle with beautifully adjustable backlighting.

There is an alternative I use often. My read need is too great for my bank account.

The public library.

I practically grew up in the town library. It's not an unfamiliar option.

However if it's not something you want to keep, Amazon actually has a read-for-free library-type program. You can have up to 30 titles in your list.

I also dont do that. I'm very possessive about books, in case that wasnt obvious :D

Regarding the license, they can define what constitutes authorized use of software to download materials and the circumvention of DRM is one gotcha.

Limitations. Unless specifically indicated otherwise, you may not sell, rent, lease, distribute, broadcast, sublicense, or otherwise assign any rights to the Kindle Content or any portion of it to any third party, and you may not remove or modify any proprietary notices or labels on the Kindle Content. In addition, you may not attempt to bypass, modify, defeat, or otherwise circumvent any digital rights management system or other content protection or features used as part of the Service.”

They also can terminate your license at any time. In that case you would be obligated to cease using Kindle devices to view licensed content.

Termination; Fraud. Your rights under this Agreement will automatically terminate if you fail to comply with any term of this Agreement. We may also terminate your right to use the Service at any time, including if we determine your use violates any term of this Agreement or involves any fraud or misuse of the Service. In case of such termination, you must cease all use of the Service, and Amazon may immediately revoke your access to the Service without refund of any fees. If we determine you fraudulently obtain or use any Tokens, we may revoke those Tokens and charge your credit card or other payment instrument for any products redeemed using those Tokens. Amazon's failure to insist upon or enforce your strict compliance with this Agreement will not constitute a waiver of any of its rights.”

Yeah I know about the Limitations, etc. That kind of stuff also applies when you buy regular books, music, movies, etc. That's all copyright infringement stuff.

How can a “news outlet” “Speak truth to power,.” when it us is owned by the second wealthiest person in the world?

It's called Kindle Unlimited. But it's limited 30 titles?

I understand. Books are my fetish. I own Mein Kampf, The Bell Curve, Das Kapital, Gender Queer, The Bluest Eye, Slaughterhouse Five, and on and on and on.

The best way to get me to read a book is to ban it.

Yep. OTOH if she tried again she probably would have been and that was probably made pretty clear to her from her bosses.
Indeed. There's a bit more of this kind of editorial micromanagement coming from both Bezos and Soon-Shiong (LA Times owner), with some people leaving in protest. I imagine it's going to be rough seas for OpEd writers if they have to worry about pieces that are critical of the incoming president when the aforementioned owners seem interested in avoiding conflict with the new administration.
