Washington Post Cartoonist Quits After Jeff Bezos Cartoon Is Killed

Yeah I know about the Limitations, etc. That kind of stuff also applies when you buy regular books, music, movies, etc. That's all copyright infringement stuff.
Right. The issue here is that since you are granted a license to view the book on a supported device, they could terminate your license at any time which would impose an obligation on you to cease viewing said book on your owned device since the license has been revoked. Obviously no one is going to knock on your door. But, legally speaking, you would be violating the license agreement and Amazon could seek penalties.

Can they show up at your door and take CDs and books? I mean I get what you're saying, I'm just trying to examine the exploitable (and legal) angles here.

Like if they came to confiscate my Kindle, I'd say I lost it in a boating accident. ;) That's actually a conservative joke.

Things that looked good on paper for 600 Alex.

Wait … the class struggle is more difficult to manage post scarcity (and we currently live in a post scarcity world … we just suck at distribution).

Due diligence here. Do we have evidence that Bezos was consulted, or did the board take an 'educated guess' or make an anticipatory decision.

Weird, so making a statement that besmirches the owner of the business you work for may not be seen as acceptable by some. Who knew?
That's when the press stops being called "free."

Indeed. There's a bit more of this kind of editorial micromanagement coming from both Bezos and Soon-Shiong (LA Times owner), with some people leaving in protest. I imagine it's going to be rough seas for OpEd writers if they have to worry about pieces that are critical of the incoming president when the aforementioned owners seem interested in avoiding conflict with the new administration.
The LA Times owner is having issues with his employees disagreeing with his stance of bringing in more centrist and right leaning voices to the paper.

...and more meddling in the editorial aspect of the paper, which has been the bigger row.

Everyone has a boss. The boss gets to set the tone of the organization. If you disagree, you can either try to convince your boss to change his mind or go somewhere that suits you better. Trying to expand the consumer base for the LA Times sounds like a good strategy to me.

Sure, and that's what's happening. Whether or not that's going to expand the base is a tough question to answer since baked into it is the polarized nature of media, so those who expect the paper to align with their view of the world might make the same decision to go elsewhere. The issue here isn't that "everyone has a boss", but that the traditional role of newspaper owners has changed in these two papers.

Because FREEDUMB FRUM SOSHULIZM is more important!
Just remember that if you ever collect government benefits of any kind (or if you already have....)

Everyone is against government "handouts" , until they ain't.....

Political Cartoonist vs. Political owner. Ownership of the Fourth Estate?... Bezos delivered the Washington Post to the realm of Fox News. Glad the cartoon in question got a good airing.

The Fourth Estate has always had private owners. Not sure what point you’re trying to make.

There was a time newspapers were privately owned to report the news. Now news media is privately owned to report an agenda.

Freedom of the press until the owner doesn't like it. He would have displayed twice the integrity and backbone by allowing it. This makes him look like a p***y.

He's lowered himself right down there with Elon. I have lost all respect I once had for him.

It wasn't always that way, but it seems like we were fortunate to live through an era of it, with Watergate and Pentagon Papers reporting.

Reminds me of how Russia's independent media lost its independence.

They were so hounded by the Putin government that many owners and staff fled Russia to escape persecution/arrest.

In their absense, the Kremlin awarded their business licenses to pro-Putin oligarchs.

One of the few to survive is Meduza (Medusa), a Russian/English language newspaper now operating out of Latvia.

It’s the same now as it ever was. There is no “golden age” of newspapers where there were no agendas and the owners had no input. The difference is is it’s someone like Jeff Bezos who is apparently hated by so many.

Walk is still free to print whatever they like, so long as the owner agrees. Which means it’s exactly the same as it’s been since its founding.
