Walmart set to roll out ‘autonomous' janitors

OK, and when the 'market' wage is $8 an hour with no benefits, what do conservative say when that worker gets sick or his child gets sick and he can't afford healthcare? Should he 1) beg, or 2) die?

If someone is working an $8 an hour job to support their family, than they are doing something wrong.

You are wrong. Companies like Walmart are more interested in automated technologies because it is not worth it to pay someone $15 to sweep a floor.

Just one more thing that liberals hacks do not understand.

So if workers would accept lets say $5 an hour then they would not lose their job to a robot?

And if someone breaks the machine, the machine wont sue

And the machine won't leave work early to take it's kid to the doctor.

Exactly. It is not my problem (or the government's) if someone is not motivated to get an education, which is all but free to low income families.

That's a myopic view, and the reality is the consequences of not investing in this country's people become evident when you have a growing lower class. Public schooling is available for "free", but a college education is a different story. We already have a massive issue with middle class folk stuck with debt the moment they come out of school. We can all say "it's not my problem", but the folks with less money to spend impact economic growth.

I am already paying to put my kids through college. I don't want to pay for someone else's as well.

Because you know, they don't make enough money as is. Corporations are such scumbags in general. Teh execs and share holders are greedy SOBs. Anything to screw workers and take even more of the profit.

If your boss could replace you with a machine he or she would.Heck if your boss could he would pay someone in China pennies on the dollar to do your job if that person could remote control a robot here to do your job. So you can shove this ha ha how dare poor people ask for more money for the hard work they do bs. Everyone's job will be replaced by a machine or some person working by remote overseas one day.

Exactly, and it points the complete lack of empathy and assholeness of these people. Yeah, the hell with people who don't have the intelligence/skills/means to learn a skilled job, they should just die and be homeless. Or they should work for slave wages. This is what right wingers have become, such vile, despicable people. Until of course it is their jobs at risk, then they demand something be done. Look at all the coal workers voting Trump because they wanted their low skilled jobs to stay or come back.

And isn't it supposed to be liberals who are elitists? Right wingers basically thumbing their nose to millions of people who serve them all the time, they don't deserve livable wages. Give me a break. This country truly has become a country of assholes

I think it is. Liberalss want the government to force companies to pay unskilled people more than their labor is worth (Socialism) and conservatives want the market to decide how much someone's labor is worth (Capitalism)

Waiting for the market to decide how much labor is worth is a great way to cause it to collapse. Employers are notorious for not accounting for the rising cost of living. They think that since they got by on $6.50 an hour when they were young, the young people of today should be able to buck up and do it to. This has the added benefit of increasing their profit margins and allowing for higher salary for those at the top.

But the sad reality is: Unskilled labor is the majority and represents the strength of the economy. The less people make, the less money they spend. The less money they spend, the less business their employers get and the less their employers can afford to pay their workers. This is a feedback loop that leads to recession. Mandating a living wage can avert market collapse by exponentially creating consumers which creates business and boosts the economy. Labor costs are not a zero sum game. Labor costs do not represent lost money. Wages paid to workers flow back into the economy and offset the lower profit margins that companies may face in the first few months of a minimum wage increase. Granted, poorly run businesses might shut down in the beginning, but eventually the entire economy benefits from mandated increased wages and business booms.

The idea would be to structure it so its less of a burden on all of us to be able to do so. The bigger concern is how to manage something like that effectively. People taking out second mortgages or kids stuck with student loans for years after their graduations doesn't make much sense.

Yes, everyone can be above average in good paying jobs. Good argument.

Are you saying that people should work for nothing like robots do? Robots don't eat or sleep either.

Of course not. I am just pointing out his job is not safe.

I think a lot of them are deluded and think there is this magical job fairy that just hands out decent paying jobs and that low wage workers are just stupid for not finding this job fairy and that there is no such thing as a labor participation rate or unemployment rate. They had this attitude as jobs were outsourcing to China and India. They tried to make it seem as though if these manufacturing jobs weren't here then most of these people would just find work in more advance fields. Some of these same ********ers that voted for the trade deals voted against the job assistance training bills. I am sure as technology progresses and their jobs are replaced by machines or by people working remotely over here many of them will change their mind when they realize that simply changing their skill set won't help them get another job.

Walmart announced on Monday that it plans to deploy 360 autonomous custodial robots by the end of January that will mop the floors of some of its stores. The retailer said in a joint statement with developer Brain Corp. that the machines will be able to scrub floors even with customers around. The robots will feature multiple sensors that allow them to scan for people and obstacles.

"BrainOS technology allows robots to effectively and safely function in complex, crowded environments, ensuring increased productivity and efficiency across applications," Brain Corp. CEO Eugene Izhikevich said in a statement. "We look forward to continuing to work alongside Walmart to help build intelligent, connected stores."Bloomberg first reported on the announcement. The devices resemble a miniature Zamboni, the machine used to resurface ice at ice-skating rinks, and a motorized wheelchair, the news outlet said, and are already in use at airports in Seattle, Boston and Miami.Bloomberg reported that Walmart has previously dipped into the robot market by using automated devices to scan shelves, move products and check inventory.

So much for that $15 minimum wage for unskilled labor. Just one more thing that liberals missed the mark on.

Machines replacing minimum wage trump supporters at Walmart. More Americans losing their jobs. Just one more thing the republicans missed the mark on.

Paying workers a LIVEABLE wage is not socialism. It is HUMANITY.

But the conservatives want more CEOs to be paid 7, 8 and even 9 figure salaries to do nothing except sack workers.

Remind me again how much Carly Fiorina was paid to leave HP - after she almost bankrupted the organisation? I believe it was OVER $35 MILLION,

I believe the conservatives - especially the pro-life ones - would have no problem with these workers just dying. Well health care should only be for the rich - right?

I am already paying to put my kids through college. I don't want to pay for someone else's as well.

I am an organ donor - but I don't want my organs to go to a greedy selfish conservative.

People who cannot depend on God for help and sustenance generally tend to support government control of wages and benefits which unfortunately do damage to the economy by disrupting the competitive nature of a healthy free market.
