[W: #303] Get your first look at Halle Bailey as (black) Ariel in The Little Mermaid

"Unlike you snowflakes i am not so easily triggered"

WHY BLACK GIRL PLAY ARIEL :mad::mad: WOKENESS RUN AMOK I WANT THE BLACK PRESENCE IN MY LIFE TO BE LIMITED TO MY TWO BLACK ACQUAINTANCES ONLY PLZ

And that girl you dated in college.

Can't a studio or producer just make a movie without obsessing over race? Personally, I can enjoy a moving if it doesn't suck, like the latest woke version of Cinderalla apparently did. Even the critics hated it, which is sort of surprising when one considers they hit the trifecta with their version of the, um, fairy godmother.

Well your first link isn’t very unbiased, so I’ll skip over that one. Rotten Tomatoes didn’t dislike it over its “wokeness,” it said the music and dialogue were clunky. Did you even read the review?

The better question is why the objections to the variations on a theme. If someone wants to reimagine a story and make it with different characters than the original, what exactly is the problem?

Did anybody piss and moan this much over “The Wiz?”

Rising production and financial costs make investors unwilling to support risky endeavors.
But isnt regurgitating the same old stuff a risk too?

Wasn’t the cartoon version of Little Mermaid released in 1989? So generations ago.

The “live actor” Cinderella in 2015 made over $500M worldwide.

The “live actor” Lion King in 2019 the same.

I’d say Disney is likely anticipating another $500M from Live actor Little Mermaid, if the trend holds.

Good point. Im not watching recycled stuff myself, so no skin off my back.

Who said a studio decision on casting an actress was imperative?

Why the obfuscation? Nobody to my knowledge. I’m just asking a simple question, ace, which you obviously can’t or won’t answer. Here it is again, more direct this time for your benefit: Why is Disney repeatedly recasting roles based on race? It’s happening a little too frequently to chalk it up to coincidence or factors like the singing or acting ability of the actors. It’s not like they’re trying to field a team for the Lakers.

Little kids will watch a move they love 827 times in a row if they’re allowed.

And parents buy them. I want to say that it’s about $20-30 to buy a movie on demand. (More to go to the theater)

Adults are not the target audience for these films. Kids are.

And a bonus of bringing back a favorite Disney movie? Parents don’t hesitate to take their kids to see them. They know the content of “Little Mermaid” or “Lion King” etc. Parents LOVE the idea of sharing something good, memorable, etc from THEIR childhood with their kids.

It’s practically instant revenue.

My son watches his favorite stuff over and over again and Im fine with it since its at home. No way would I buy him a ticket to the same movie more than once!

But you do pay the $20-30 to buy it on Demand or pay the monthly subscription fee to whatever streaming service.

I won’t go to the movies repeatedly either - but I also don’t think twice about clicking “buy” on the remote.

Nope. I burn the movies and cartoons onto DVDs so he can rewatch it to his heart's content.

That’s SO 2000’s and 2010’s 😂

The newest thing is just downloading them and then having iPads with access to stream.

(I’m teasing…I’m from the era where we waiting for the song to come on a radio and recorded them on cassette tapes)

Disney’s live action films have tended to contain darker themes and more adult content than the originals. And yeah, when their job is come up with what a real life mermaid would look like I’m going to critique their choices.

Why does it have to be real-life? Is there a real-life Esmeralda? Are there real-life Wakandans? Can we have white Wakandans, or would that result in death threats like fans of the black Pokémon character dished out when an artist apparently added a little too much titanium to his palate? I mean, we have black Hobbits, so why not white Wakandans? Maybe an Egyptian, belly-dancing Moana? Remember how excited Mexicans were with Coco, and ditto with Colombians and Encanto? Maybe they were having a little too much fun. How about a “Miguel” from Lapland, or a Mongolian Mirabel? About the only hero Mongolians have is Genghis Khan. They could use another one, even if it’s just an imaginary one at the expense of Colombians. It’s the price you pay for diversity.

Love it.

Reminds me of me when I saw the original and how Ariel was a redhead. Except I'm not a jerk and am happy other girls can have that feeling too.

Of course, that’s ignoring the fact that there never would have been a “too” moment if Disney had reimagined the character from Danish picture books from the beginning. Maybe you could have “had that feeling” watching I Love Lucy reruns on Hulu. They even have colorized versions now, where you can really feel included.

You mean the one about how fairy tales often had a moral message and appealed to kids visually? ❓

Rotten Tomatoes didn’t dislike it over its “wokeness,” it said the music and dialogue were clunky. Did you even read the review?

I was just establishing that the movie sucked. If reimagining it with a “fabulous” fairy godmother was somehow supposed to improve it, it didn’t work. Moral of this story: “Some stones are better left unturned.”

Nah I lost interest when it started yammering about “brainwashing our children into LGBTQ ideology.” That said all I needed to hear. It’s not going to give a fair review of the film.

Did you watch the movie? Tell the truth.

I guess to broaden the appeal to groups who previously were not featured in such films.

Why you feel that is newsworthy is beyond me.

Yeah, streaming is cheaper than going to the movies, but sometimes I just like getting my wife out of the house and to a theater, then maybe head to a custard shop. It’s more about the experience. When it comes to buying movies, I usually buy a 4K or BluRay with the digital download feature. I meld the old fashioned with the new, and I do it this way for several reasons: 1) Adding a digital code doesn’t cost much from the base price of the movie; 2) I actually own something, i.e. a piece of physical media that has real monetary value. I don’t have to keep paying streaming licensing fees, and just try selling your Vudu or MoviesAnywhere collection; 3) I own the original content. I don’t have to concern myself with, say, woke feminist prudes convincing Warner Brothers to reduce the size of Lola’s breasts in a future release of Space Jam. I can ogle them—or not—in all of their original glory, just as the film-maker intended.

I realize now that you didn't actually have a point and were instead just ranting for the sake of doing so. My apologies for assigning a level of foresight you clearly didn't have.
Sorry, there was a point there. I'm just astounded that you can't grasp it. It wasn't complicated.
I'm starting to think you don't know what dodge means.
You haven't answered the question yet.
You asked me what would happen if Hollywood took an African folktale and cast it with white characters.
Nope. I didn't ask you that.
I pointed out that Hollywood has done similar before, like remaking Japanese films with white actors, or like how an animated movie based on the tales of Arabian Nights was voiced by white people.

You apparently cannot grasp the similarities, so I'll spell it out for you; if Hollywood did so, and did it well, they'd probably make hundreds of millions of dollars off of it.
You not only shifted the question/goalpost, but you used the most idiotic example out there. You think that a group of elite warriors going to rescue a princess isn't a common trope throughout history? Lol...OK. Putting your deflection aside, I'm waiting for the answer to my question still.
