[W: #303] Get your first look at Halle Bailey as (black) Ariel in The Little Mermaid

You didn't. You made an observation. I asked if "YOU" would be OK with it. You're fine with Hollywood taking an African folktale and just putting white people in it? Yes or no?

I wouldn't care, just like I didn't care when Hollywood did the same for other cultures.

But anything you can to distract that you are absolutely terrified of answering a simple question.

Terrified of answering a question I already answered. I'm guessing all that spittle is blocking part of your screen.

Finally. Thanks. Then you're consistent.

You didn't until right there.

For a Disney movie.

I don't know why I am bothering at this point, if the original source material of a Disney movie is really that important to you then so be it. I won't change your mind because the integrity that a Disney movie not be changed in any way is obviously very important to you.

Especially considering that the Ariel story itself from Disney is a reworking of the original story.

Inside Edition did.a report on the trailer and it’s obvious little black girls are excited to see a “black” Ariel, but not everyone is thrilled with it. So far it’s received 1.5 million downvotes on YouTube. Also, remember the wokies who said there’s no such thing as white mermaids, or race doesn’t matter? Judging from comments on various forums, it does matter when someone comes along and renders Halle Bailey’s Ariel as a white redhead. And it seems to matter to Twitter, as it bans or suspends accounts that bring up the subject.

Wasn’t the cartoon version of Little Mermaid released in 1989? So generations ago.

The “live actor” Cinderella in 2015 made over $500M worldwide.

The “live actor” Lion King in 2019 the same.

I’d say Disney is likely anticipating another $500M from Live actor Little Mermaid, if the trend holds.

I have to admit - I’d forgotten about Cinderella, and I’ve watched it probably 10 times. Love it.

Nope. I burn the movies and cartoons onto DVDs so he can rewatch it to his heart's content.

Dude. Digital movies are your friend. I have like 600 movies on Vudu alone. That’s not counting the DVDs that I’ve ripped to a server.

Oh for goodness sakes. The story is a fantasy; nothing wrong with casting an AA actor or any other culture/race.
There is no mention of race in the story so the argument is moot. The title of the movie is NOT The White Little Mermaid

Anthony Mackie got the same backlash for being cast as Captain America.

Why can't a mermaid or Captain America be an actor of color when the story doesn't spefically mention race?

How about white people cast as Native Americans ................. and that's real life

Well … here’s a wrinkle.

From the ones I've watched, I have not liked a single one of them, with the exception being Cruella, and that's not a remake, it's a unique story (it's like a 7.8/10 for me). This movie does not interest me, but honestly, the live-action remakes have never interested me.

Though I guess that it is making little black girls happy to see, from what I've seen from some videos on the internet. Which is good; a part of why diversity is so important in media. But I just fine these live-action remakes to be a poor imitation of a much better product, which this looking to be like as well, especially since they hired Melissa McCarthy to play Ursula.

I liked Aladdin. The choreography in some of the numbers was top-notch. Emma Watson made a good Belle in Beauty and the Beast. Disney didn’t ruin it by trying to caste a Tibetan yak milker in the role even though it probably would have lifted the self-esteem of little Tibetan girls. The Jungle Book kept my interest. Couldn’t get into Dumbo. I have The Lion King on 4K Ultra but have never watched it. Something about “real” talking lions reminded me of a commercial with an itchy talking pug in it.

I’ve heard the story. Sounds like a fairy tale:

There is no evidence that Hans Christian Andersen was gay, although there are some letters that he wrote to other men in which he expresses his attraction to them. He also was attracted to 'unattainable' women, such as those who were already married, too socially prominent for his status, or too wealthy. He is believed to have been celibate for his entire life. He did propose to Jenny Lind, the famous singer, but he was refused. Andersen was also a very moral and religious person and would not have done anything that would have contradicted his religious beliefs.

The original story varies quite a bit from Disney.

Unlike the Disney versions, these fairy taiks didn’t always have happy endings. In one version, maybe they lived happily ever after, while in another things weren’t quite so rosy. For example, I don’t recall Eugene leaping from the tower after Mother Gothel tells him he’ll never see Rapunzel again, causing him to be blinded when his eyes are impaled with thorns. But Disney still credits the Brothers Grimm for the story, because their version was the inspiration for Tangled.

Sounds like a fairy tale? Are you ****ing kidding me? THE WHOLE ****ING THING IS A FAIRY TALE.

🤣🤣

Yeah, especially the part about Andersen being gay, or the story serving as a form of psychotherapy for him.

Edvard Collin letters are made up then?

The scholarship around this issue seems to be in flux. I don’t take anything as gospel at this point. I mean, if he were gay, how can you explain this:

The letter was sent to Christian Voigt, the brother of Riborg Voigt -- a woman he continued to love despite the fact she married another man. In it, he confessed that a number of his poems were inspired by his unrequited feelings for Riborg. But those feelings may not have been so unrequited.

Denmark’s leading Hans Christian Andersen expert told reporters, “If only he could have known that he was not alone in his infatuation. When Riborg Voigt died, the poems he had written for her were found along with a bouquet and a photograph of Andersen in a hidden compartment in her drawer.”
Andersen acted in a similar way. He carried a letter from Riborg in a purse that he wore around his neck until the day that he died in 1875, at age 70.

Let’s say for the sake of argument Andersen was gay. Or maybe he was bi or just loved people. How do you know the mermaid story was inspired by unrequited love from a man and not Riborg? Did he keep a letter from his presumed gay lover in a purse around his neck until he died like he apparently did with her? Write poems to him? Give him flowers? ❓

He wrote The Little Mermaid "to" him.

Sent a copy to him, too. But his love was unrequited.

Where’s your proof of this? How do you know he didn’t write it for Riborg, or just on the topic of unrequited love in general? Did he write, “The Little Mermaid is dedicated to my friend Edvard Collin” in a published edition or what? ❓

Supes, dont give him any ideas!

I limit his internet use for his own good.

I was thinking more of you, bud. 🤣🤣

Digital movie storage has revolutionized movie-watching for me. I used to be a TSM for Movie Gallery, and had over 1,000 physical dvds. Storing them was a nightmare.

Now I have some on Vudu, and others in a 2T external hard drive that’s the size of a paperback.
