[W:1103] Netanyahu tells Israel ‘We are at war’ after Hamas launches an unprecedented attack on the country - Live Thread.

Apparently this whole thing blew up because a couple of Israelis prayed a little too close to the mosque in Jerusalem.

We had deadly riots across the Middle East because some pastor in Florida burned a Quran, and people blamed the pastor.

It's amazing how low a bar some people set for acceptable behavior of Islamists.

That may be an excuse (or disrupting the Israel-Saudi Arabia talks, or whichever), but, this took months to plan and resource. More likely the fact that it's the 50th Anniversary of the Yom Kippur war played a role than some recent events.

Nothing says faithful to Christ like rage-burning a different creed's holy book.

On the 50th Anniversary of the Yom Kippur War Hamas thought the best way to commemorate it was to lose more land.

Yeah, Israel tends to poke and prod and do things to instigate. But when they get stung, they tend to go all out and blow up apartment complexes or weddings.

To be fair, Hamas also deliberately militarizes sympathetic targets in order to create sympathetic victims of Israeli strikes.

But this attack was something far beyond anything Hamas has strung together before. They had to have had some help with it.

they are publicly claiming to have had Iranian backing.

It's worth noting - the Israeli military goes to extraordinary lengths to reduce Palestinian civilian casualties. I do not know of another military that makes a consistent habit of telling people specifically where it is going to attack before doing so.
Yes they do, the roof knock is one way of saying GTFO
But as always shit happens and Israelis do their best not to kill civilians, and are held to a higher standard than Hamas/Hezbollah to name a few

They may well very well conclude delivering such a psychological blow to Israel and throwing a massive wrench into Israeli-Arab peace talks to be worth it.

we don't know yet what the result is going to be, territory-wise. Israel probably doesn't want to take direct control of Gaza back.

But Yom Kippur was a disaster for Israel. They got caught by surprise - the backlash discredited the government, and the ruling Labor party. Initial rally-round-the-PM effect (which will also quiet protests over judicial changes) may not last.....

....but, that would run along the idea that Bibi ends up being blamed for being caught by surprise. Unlikely he gets blamed for being too soft on Hamas.

Israel has violated international law
Tell me, are Israeli violations higher or lower than Arab countries of IL?
Which Arab country has not violated IL?
I am sure you have those countries names close at hand

Precisely how many of those countries receive vast amounts of US aid on a routine basis?

Same thing when Sharon went there

Based on early declarations, they plan to level a lot of it.

Yup. Though, again, I caution; we don't know what happens, territorially.

Deflection. Moving goal posts
I have no time for dumbass games that far too many here play

Oh please, take that shit to the Conspiracy thread, or better yet, keep the nutty to yourself.

Not really a conspiracy. He’s not saying that he allowed the attack etc merely that Hamas have served him up the moment he needed to solidify his power and potentially change the laws he’s been looking to change for a while.

Wouldn't be surprised. A little full-scale attack by Hamas to deflect the West's attention while it commits further dirty deeds in Ukraine.

Wouldn't be surprised if Russia AND Iran cooked it up.

Seems more likely Israel got lazy, cocky and overconfident, as they seem to do on a routine basis, and Hamas took full advantage

I agree with you that Israel's got this. When they get slapped, they don't pull their punches when they retaliate. They don't believe in "proportional response". They believe in fire and brimstone.

And that explains why they’ve been dealing with an endless insurgency.

Based on early declarations, they plan to level a lot of it.

They may create a buffer zone. Not sure how that stops rockets and paragliders, but, I understand the instinct.
