Vladimir Putin grants former NSA contractor Edward Snowden Russian citizenship

Interesting to note I suppose, given all that Putin's got his hands full with.

I suppose it begs the question:

"Does Snowden now become liable to RU military mobilization?"

Imagine the irony? Or perhaps, would that be getting one's 'just deserts'?
I wish him the joy of his choices.

He needs the cannon fodder

Would love to see that so Trump can show his true colors.
Mr. Trump isn't likely to move to a country that isn't as warm as Florida and which doesn't have a whole lot of golf courses.

On the other hand, depending on your theological bent, it always possible that Mr. Trump IS likely to end up someplace a whole lot warmer than Florida AND which has absolutely no golf courses at all.

I noticed he was one out of 75 people granted citizenship. I can't help but wonder; is it that difficult to obtain Russian citizenship or were there only 75 applicants????

To put things into perspective: Even Iceland had granted citizenship to about 600 people a few years back. And they onlyhave some 300k people there if memory serves me right. lol.

Very good question.
Unfortunately I don't think I am qualified to weigh in with any authoritative answers.
Hello out there in Thailand, are you really IN Thailand?

Yes I am located in Thailand and I have lived here now for the better part of the last 18 years.

Was Snowden seeking Russian citizenship?

And now that he's been granted it, can he become President of Russia?

Hi Mark,

It is my understanding that he got his Russian residence a few years back and applied for Russian citizenship soon after that.

No.

Under Russian law, a presidential candidate must be a citizen of the Russian Federation who is at least 35 years old, has permanently resided in Russia for at least 25 years and does not have and has never previously had foreign citizenship or a foreign residence permit.

Now I will admit that that doesn't say that the President must be a citizen of the Russian Federation who is at least 35 years old, has permanently resided in Russia for at least 25 years and does not have and has never previously had foreign citizenship or a foreign residence permit but it is rather difficult to get elected to an office when you are not a candidate in an election for that office.

On the other hand, if I were to apply the same quality of "logic" as the members of "Claque Failed Casino Operator" use routinely, I would have to agree that since the Russian Constitution does NOT PROHIBIT someone who does not meet the eligibility criteria to be a candidate for the office of President from actually holding the office of President, Mr. Snowden can become President of Russia. However, I'm not that stupid.
