SALEM, N.J. (CBS) — A fast-food worker viciously attacked a young mother in front of the victim’s young son and the entire attack was caught on tape.[/h]The attack happened Tuesday afternoon in the city of Salem, New Jersey and video of the assault was later posted on Facebook.
[h=1]The Salem Police Chief posted on his Facebook page that the suspect has been identified and charges are being filed against the suspect.
Adding to the shock factor of the video is that several bystanders do not intervene and instead take out their cell phones and record the attack.
[/h]No one does a thing, cept the toddler. No idea what instigated the event but McDonalds employee will be going to jail.

It is amazing what the digital age has wrought.

I'm not the kind to sit back and do nothing, I'd jump right in there, but as an example of how crazy this **** is becoming, in Toronto, during what appeared to be a gang hit, a guy was shot in the food court of the Eton Centre and CBC news reported on all the tweets coming from inside the building.

Who the **** is tweeting while people are firing off guns?

On a second note though, this digital phenomena does carry an odd benefit, that fact that all these incidents are being recorded provides plenty of clear evidence for law enforcement to charge and prosecute.

The problem is interviening can get you in legal trouble too.

It is true, depends on how you do it though, I believe simply forcefully restraining is permissible, was in my case when me and my friend stopped a guy from beating up his girlfriend in the hotel. We both restrained him til RCMP arrived.

I'd make two observations here:

1. I hope the woman is charged with attempted murder with a jail sentence of a couple of decades. This is what appears to be a woman of about 200lbs or more, wailing away on a woman half her size. I think we've all seen or heard of people in similar circumstances actually dying from such an attack. The woman who assaulted the other woman is a danger to society if this is how she handles disputes and she should be locked away for a very long time. She'll probably be Queen of the Block in whatever prison she soon calls home.

2. I thought, perhaps wrongly, that there were laws in the US now that required citizens to assist other citizens when they were being attacked or they were in serious, life threatening danger. It's unclear from the video whether or not the crowd watching was supportive of the woman doing the beating but it's a sad commentary on society that no one offers even the slightest bit of resistance to cause this woman to think twice. But then, this is New Jersey and there is a lot of trouble in that State and lots of areas no sane person would travel, even in daylight, so it's possible that the crowd was simply exercising their right to survive themselves.

There are laws in some states referred to as Samaritan Laws which protect those who give aid in emergency and in some states there are laws that failure to render aid may result in prosecution; I believe it is state legislation only.

It is good that there is ability to easily record such situations for prosecution but I, for one, could not standby and watch without taking equal or more violent action for in this instance the victim's life seemed endangered.

Watching without giving assistance chafes against every fiber of my soul.

DAMN!

As a relative old man, I might get beaten to a pulp by Big Bertha, but I'd rather try to explain that than have to try to explain why I stood by and filmed someone potentially getting beaten to death. It is especially sickening to me that the little boy was the only one "man" enough to come to the defense of his mom and the little guy is going to be traumatized for years to come.

The problem is, intervention could and likely WOULD result in you getting arrested as well, in addition to face a possible law suit, from both the assaulted and the place of business.

And I'm not about to just sit there and take a flurry of cheap shots without returning a few. I woulda cold cocked that bitch, right on her chin(s). In CT, that would get me arrested, and facing charges of assault, and since it's man vs woman, the punishment would be harsh.

Justice died years ago in this country, once the profitability of it became realized.

Anyone see the movie"Kick Ass"?

"Three guys beating up on one, and every just stands there and watches...and I'M the one you call crazy!?!"

My sentiments exactly; could be my exact words.

Have a great day CJ

In Texas, a bystander would merely point out they are armed, and the attacked needs to cease and desist NOW. Works very well.

Does anyone know why the heck she went postal? The woman must have been followed. I don't get it! I hope everyone involved who did nothing feel like crap, as they should!!! I feel sorry for the little boy!

This is New Jersey. The state has decided people can't be trusted. This was not a cat fight. I would have intervened. The woman in the Burqa will make someone a fine husband in jail.

This is NJ which means the woman getting beat up will get sued, big Bertha gets a slap on the hand and in her neighborhood gets lots of respect for a.) beating down someone b.) going to jail for it (big rep points there). This is all positive as far as big bertha goes.
