There was a 5.7 earthquake this early this morning that shook people from their beds. There doesn't seem to be any injuries....but the iconic statue of Angel Moroni on top of the LDS temple lost his trumpet. The legend has it that when Mornoni blows his horn it signifies the end of the world....

Angel Moroni on Salt Lake Temple damaged in earthquake - Deseret News

Doesn't look like Moroni will be blowing his horn for awhile....so relax, the world is safe....for now.

edit: if you look at the bottom of the pic you can see part of the horn laying at the base.

Ohhh noessss...this is going to be a mass freakout. :lamo

Hey be safe, you guys don't have the kind of earthquake standards we have in Cali.

That's true, most of the homes are made of brick.

But I survived the Northridge quake and this was nothing compared to that....(famous last words). lol

About time for some idiot to come in here and claim his god is angry at Mormons.

Oh that is right, probably watching porn.

I've never thought Moroni was a suitable name for an angel. God or Joseph Smith really ****ed that one up.

I know, people here just call it the "Angel Macaroni."

It's still on the roof of the temple.

Whoa...the earth just shook again. It's like being a house boat.

Anyway...here's the horn...looks like the temple suffered a few cracks, too.

KSL 5 TV - CHOPPER 5: The Angel Moroni statue that stands...

By the way, what I meant by Cali quake standards is this:

The house Karen and I live in was built in 1996, two years AFTER the VERY destructive 1994 Northridge Earthquake, which was either a 6.7 or a 6.8.
Since quakes are a logarithmic scale, not LINEAR, a 6.7 is actually HUNDREDS of times worse than your SLC 5.7 shaker.
With OUR house being a 1996 model, it was built to SURPASS pre-Northridge Quake standards.
Sure, we would sustain some damage in another 6.7...some wall cracks, a lot of furniture tipping over, maybe a water pipe burst or gas line problems (immediate shutoff! we have an auto shutoff valve on ours) but the house would not fall down or collapse!

A 4.5 quake in Southern California generally isn't even enough to make people interrupt their conversation and I am half serious when I say that because I have actually witnessed "Bla bla bla and you know bla bla...what was that? Oh, an earthquake, so anyway bla bla bla...etc" during a 4 point something or a 5 something before.

Seems you guys were VERY lucky this time because in the rest of the country a 5.7 temblor means total disaster.
Washington DC had to close a bunch of monuments and they had to spend two years fixing the obelisk Washington Monument because it CRACKED and might have fallen over, and DC's quake was in the high 4 scale!

I can't even imagine Utah having ANY quakes, does not compute.
And if the Pacific Northwest ever gets their predicted 7 pointer, you can kiss most of Washington State bye bye.
They did not build to seismic standards either, certainly not California standards anyway.

Oh??? Then I've been preaching to the choir, you're not a virgin!
What part of Cali were you in during the Northridge Quake?

Bro...

You totally just jinxed yourself...hard.

Oh the stories I could tell about California earthquakes....I lived in L.A. for twenty years. And you're right,...it is unusual for Utah to get quakes...but they do get them. The last time I experienced one here was in 1974 and I was lying on the couch reading Paramahansa Yogananda's book, Self Realization when a big jolt hit and threw me off the couch...but I was still deep in the spirit of the book so I took it as a sign from Sri Yukteswar and for the next hour or so I was in a state of euphoria. I guess you'd have to be there. lol This time there was no sign...unless you count the Angel Moroni losing his trumpet.

All the local news stations power went out shortly after the quake. Channel 5 didn't have a picture but we could still hear their live feed. I heard a guy say.."But I've never reported on an earthquake before...so what do I say?" Shortly after their power came back on, there were reporters out all over the streets pushing their microphones into people's faces. So much for "isolation."

My nephew recently moved here from California, partly because of the quakes. As soon as he was settled in to his new job and apartment, I explained we live on two major faults. It's only a matter of time before the big one, and NYC will fall into the Atlantic Ocean!

I'm more concerned about Yellowstone popping. If it blows, half of the US goes.

Uh ohhh, you're an old guy??
Wow so you experienced quakes in Cali back before any serious seismic construction standards?
Boy howdy, that must have been Hell.
A friend of mine lived through Sylmar 1971 and he described the damage, way scary!

Here's KTLA TV5's Chris Schauble during a recent shaker...his FIRST!!
It was a 4.4 :lamo

To this day people are still teasing him about his "Earthquake Face".

As someone who has experienced hundreds quakes ranging up to a magnitude 8.0. Including a magnitude 7.1 quake whose epicenter was only 2.5 miles away from my home. A 5.7 magnitude quake is a serious quake. When they are below magnitude 5.0 they can be fun, but at 5.0 and above they become a concern and can potentially cause serious damage. Particularly in States that do not regularly get moderate to large quakes. I'm glad to see the damage in Utah was minor and that there were no injuries, it could have been worse.

Oh wait!!!
Chris Schauble's DAUGHTERS even made fun of him!! HAHAHAHA!!! :lamo

I was living in Palmdale, CA, about 10 miles from the San Andreas fault when the Silmar quake hit in 1971. It literally tossed me out of my bed. During the aftershocks you could watch the asphalt roads ripple like water. I missed out on the Northridge quake, but I did catch the magnitude 8.0 Denali quake in Alaska in 2002, and a few 7+ magnitude quakes since. When they are under magnitude 5.0 I kind of like them, but that all changes when they reach 5.0 or bigger. Then they become a concern.

He lost his horn, he didn't blow it. Since he can't find his lost horn, I guess Jesus is never coming :(

For someone who has never experienced an earthquake it can be a bit unnerving. If you are standing on a street corner as a fully loaded 18-wheeler drives by you will experience between a 3.0 and 3.5 magnitude earthquake. Anything higher than that and it is going to alarm, justifiably, someone who has never experienced the ground suddenly move without apparent reason. Unless you live in an earthquake prone area, that is not an experience most people have.
