The US Navy sailed the guided missile destroyer USS McCampbell near contested waters in the Sea of Japan Wednesday, an action that is bound to irk Russia. The USS "McCampbell sailed in the vicinity of Peter the Great Bay to challenge Russia's excessive maritime claims and uphold the rights, freedoms, and lawful uses of the sea enjoyed by the United States and other Nations," US Navy Lt. Rachel McMarr, a spokesperson for the US Pacific Fleet, told CNN in a statement. The US warship conducted what the Navy refers to as a "Freedom of Navigation Operation." A US Navy official told CNN that the US does not recognize Russia's claims on the waters, saying that Moscow lays claim to areas that far exceed the 12 miles from the Russian coastline that is guaranteed by international law. McMarr said the freedom of navigation operations are "not about any one country, nor are they about current events."
US officials say such operations are meant to enforce the right of free passage in international waters and to challenge excessive claims. "These operations demonstrate the United States will fly, sail and operate wherever international law allows," McMarr said. "That is true in the Sea of Japan, as in other places around the globe." While the US Navy conducts such freedom of navigation operations all over the world, they come under increased scrutiny when they are aimed at contesting claims made by Russia and China. Last week, the US Navy sailed the guided-missile cruiser USS Chancellorsville near contested islands in the South China Sea, an operation that drew an immediate diplomatic protest from Beijing.

I HIGHLY doubt the brave Russian Navy will be attacking the USS McCampbell and kidnapping her sailors. Speaking of which, the US has notified Turkey that the Pentagon intends to sail a US warship into the Black Sea. The US is required to notify Turkey about the passage through the straits under the Montreux Convention, a 1936 treaty that governs the passage of military vessels through the Bosporus and the Dardanelles, which connect the Mediterranean to the Black Sea. Once again, I highly doubt the brave Russian Navy will be attacking this US vessel. They only attack little patrol boats and unarmed tugs.

Giving the incompetence of the US Navy these days..... let's hope they don't run into anything.

The USA is such a hypocritical nation... imagine Russia naval vessels sailing into the Gulf of Alaska or the Gulf of Mexico.
At least this is an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, they more or less can be counted on to work I am told, unlike some of our other stuff.
As to whether we are now sending them out with trained crews and capable officers again IDK.

The Navy is stripped naked.
We can't even operate Riverine Boats competently anymore...... (Iran)
The Navy is ****ed!

Trump isn't being a very reliable Putin Puppet, is he?
Oh well...Vladimir will just have to get over his disappointment.
Yes we should have understood that we were in trouble when our elite units working around Iran turned up incompetent a few years back.
Do you make anything of our Fifth Fleet Commander doing suicide?
THere seems to be an information black out.
This whole thing bothers me, a lot.
I need to know why he did it.

The navy is now full of careerists.....not surface warriors.
In what way?More and more these attempts to project resolve and the ability to apply force towards China and Russia (They are a team now you should know) come of instead as demonstrations of weakness.
Do you even have a clue on this topic? Freedom of Navigation exercises have been done for decades. I participated in a few myself back in the day. There are no cops on the beat, we have to exert our rights to innocent navigation in international waters. And we did. Did a few under Obama as well, and not one sailor bowed to the Chinese ships. :lamoHawkeye10 said:We increasingly dont have the ability to contest China and Russia in the region, they know it and we know it...... sailing a ship from here to there or flying a plane from here to there changes nothing about the reality.
