US warship challenges Russia claims in Sea of Japan

The US Navy sailed the guided missile destroyer USS McCampbell near contested waters in the Sea of Japan Wednesday, an action that is bound to irk Russia. The USS "McCampbell sailed in the vicinity of Peter the Great Bay to challenge Russia's excessive maritime claims and uphold the rights, freedoms, and lawful uses of the sea enjoyed by the United States and other Nations," US Navy Lt. Rachel McMarr, a spokesperson for the US Pacific Fleet, told CNN in a statement. The US warship conducted what the Navy refers to as a "Freedom of Navigation Operation." A US Navy official told CNN that the US does not recognize Russia's claims on the waters, saying that Moscow lays claim to areas that far exceed the 12 miles from the Russian coastline that is guaranteed by international law. McMarr said the freedom of navigation operations are "not about any one country, nor are they about current events."

US officials say such operations are meant to enforce the right of free passage in international waters and to challenge excessive claims. "These operations demonstrate the United States will fly, sail and operate wherever international law allows," McMarr said. "That is true in the Sea of Japan, as in other places around the globe." While the US Navy conducts such freedom of navigation operations all over the world, they come under increased scrutiny when they are aimed at contesting claims made by Russia and China. Last week, the US Navy sailed the guided-missile cruiser USS Chancellorsville near contested islands in the South China Sea, an operation that drew an immediate diplomatic protest from Beijing.

I HIGHLY doubt the brave Russian Navy will be attacking the USS McCampbell and kidnapping her sailors. Speaking of which, the US has notified Turkey that the Pentagon intends to sail a US warship into the Black Sea. The US is required to notify Turkey about the passage through the straits under the Montreux Convention, a 1936 treaty that governs the passage of military vessels through the Bosporus and the Dardanelles, which connect the Mediterranean to the Black Sea. Once again, I highly doubt the brave Russian Navy will be attacking this US vessel. They only attack little patrol boats and unarmed tugs.

More and more these attempts to project resolve and the ability to apply force towards China and Russia (They are a team now you should know) come of instead as demonstrations of weakness.

We increasingly dont have the ability to contest China and Russia in the region, they know it and we know it...... sailing a ship from here to there or flying a plane from here to there changes nothing about the reality.

Giving the incompetence of the US Navy these days..... let's hope they don't run into anything.

At least this is an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, they more or less can be counted on to work I am told, unlike some of our other stuff.

As to whether we are now sending them out with trained crews and capable officers again IDK.

The USA is such a hypocritical nation... imagine Russia naval vessels sailing into the Gulf of Alaska or the Gulf of Mexico.

The Navy is stripped naked.

We can't even operate Riverine Boats competently anymore...... (Iran)

The Navy is ****ed!

Yes we should have understood that we were in trouble when our elite units working around Iran turned up incompetent a few years back.

Do you make anything of our Fifth Fleet Commander doing suicide?

THere seems to be an information black out.

This whole thing bothers me, a lot.

I need to know why he did it.

Trump isn't being a very reliable Putin Puppet, is he?

Oh well...Vladimir will just have to get over his disappointment.

Russia last month had a huge dock crane crumble down on her smoking Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier. Extensive damage to the flight deck.

Russian ships aren't even safe while in port. Incompetence on a different scale altogether.

Okay, I imagined it.
I still LIVE HERE, so there's that.
Case closed.

Vlad is done with Trump as is virtually everyone else. That was obvious at the Argentina G20.

Trump doesn't order US Navy "Freedom of Navigation" exercises. He probably never even heard of them.

The navy is now full of careerists.....not surface warriors.

We are defining a hypocritical nation on MANY issues...but not this one.

Just like most of the rest of the elites......most tragically at the university.

I have losing the wrong people during the Clinton Draw Down as the inflection point....that is where we went wrong, that is the most major why our officer corps is weak now...That combined with the Zero defect BS the Pentagon was doing at the time which informed the best that the military was not the place to be......do you agree?

Do you even have a clue on this topic? Freedom of Navigation exercises have been done for decades. I participated in a few myself back in the day. There are no cops on the beat, we have to exert our rights to innocent navigation in international waters. And we did. Did a few under Obama as well, and not one sailor bowed to the Chinese ships. :lamo

I'd mentioned previously how Pentagon considers Japan to be the UK of the Pacific Asia. That is, the island nation of UK off the continent is the number one US historical ally in Atlantic-Europe-Eurasia. Japan now is the strongest US ally for Pacific-East Asia-India. Indeed, everything going on there the past two years is based on the strength and vision of SecDef James Mattis. Governments and populations throughout the Pacific-Asia region know this.

And now so does Russia concerning its Far East too in addition to Europe and Nato in the West. Mattis is pinching Russia from the East now and standing by Japan simultaneously. Russia and China continue to act separately in the national interest of each only.

U.S. MILITARY TESTS RUSSIA AT SEA DAYS AFTER WARNING FROM CHINA

Sailors assigned to the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS McCampbell conduct a replenishment-at-sea with the fleet replenishment oiler USNS John Ericsson in the Pacific Ocean, on July 30, 2017. The ship is part of U.S. Pacific Fleet’s Seventh Fleet, which is headquartered in Japan and active throughout the Asia-Pacific region.

The U.S. military has sent a message to Russia by sailing through a disputed waterway near Japan. The move came only a week after China mobilized its own vessels in response to a perceived transgression by the Navy.

Last week, the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Chancellorsville, traveled near the contested Paracel Islands, one of several land formations in the South China Sea that Beijing has been accused of militarizing. Two days later, Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Stockdale and Henry J. Kaiser-class underway replenishment oiler USNS Pecos sailed through the Taiwan Strait.

In response, Chinese Southern Theater Command spokesperson Colonel Li Huamin told reporters Saturday that the military had mobilized air and sea forces to warn the USS Chancellorsville to leave and Chinese forces reportedly stepped up their own patrols in the Taiwan Strait. That same day, Chinese Defense Ministry spokesperson Colonel Ren Guoqiang warned that "the Chinese military will remain on high alert and resolutely safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity."

Just as the U.S. disputes Russia's claims in northeast Asia, it also contests vast Chinese claims to the South China Sea, where Navy "freedom of navigation" operations have stirred serious tensions in recent years. China maintains overlapping claims with Brunei, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam and does not recognize Taiwan.

So Putin's not getting his return on his investment in Donald Trump. Quite the opposite in fact in military and strategic theater operations. Good on Mattis for it and to the Joint Chiefs who support him fully.

Not sure what planet you live on. Russian navy ships visit Cuba quite often and ply the waters of the Bering Sea.

Their subs regularly visit the depths off all three of our coastlines.

These are FON operations not world war 3 so let's take it a step at a time before claiming wildly and hysterically CCP and Russia are a "team" that will fight against the United States and win to gain control of the world. Moscow and Beijing aren't working together concerning FON ops nor are they working as a "team." If Russia and China are not a team against USN FONOps how are they going to win world war 3 by working together as a "team."

Enemy military forces against the USA are not ten feet tall either.

I would not be speaking if I was not at least relatively sure that I knew something.
