US to require foreign travelers to be vaccinated when restrictions lift

But illegal immigrants are not part of the electorate. If you mean that they will have American kids who will vote Democrat in 18 years...well, that seems like a very slow and uncertain way to recruit new voters. Why would we even assume that they will be Democrats?

About 600,000 per year on average. I'm supportive of mandatory eVerify and improved border control to reduce the number of illegal immigrants arriving. But I would want that to be offset with more skilled, legal immigration. Our workforce just doesn't have enough people relative to the elderly, and it's going to be a big problem if we don't start accepting more legal immigrants.

You seem to be ignoring the calls for a ‘pathway to citizenship’ for ‘undocumented’ immigrants. I also support an eVerify mandate coupled with changes to the federal income tax code preventing ‘job creators’ from deducting the direct labor costs of any non-eVerfiy certified labor.

I'm aware of the political games the Republicans have played with this issue. I don't excuse them. However, the Democrats proved a significant reform bill can be passed when one party controls both branches. They had the momentum when they pushed through the ACA. Why stop there?
Economic recovery and healthcare reform were higher properties.

Why do you believe it's the job of Democrats to enact legislation that's popular among current Republican voters?

Immigration will be a benefit to the long term strength of the U.S. economy.

Agreed.

Super, we agree... We need new LAW in order to deal with the immigration mess... I look forward to the GOP working with DNC on getting this accomplished...
A wall combined with enforcement of current laws would likely be effective.

It was hard enough to get ACA through by the skin of its teeth with no GOP votes. Can you imagine immigration reform at the same time after years of neglect? It’s not realistic to think both could have been done at once in a short span of time.

They ARE enforcing current laws.. Which law do think is not being enforced?

Illegal immigration has an effect on our economy. It increases the profits of businesses that use them while decreasing the opportunities of citizens. But besides this more than two issues at a time can be handled by our representatives. I can't imagine telling my boss I can only handle two assignments at a time during the year.

I think all would agree there are record number of immigrants. Many were housed in Mexico by Trump and Covid laws so Biden gets the influx of them combined with those who are told US will be more receptive. We need solutions not complaints. We are working in other countries to dispel rumors. We need more personnel to quickly process and either send back or process claims. I understand Biden is still enforcing Title 42 installed under Trump to send back most migrants.

Challenging, but doable. They were just tickled pink to get ACA passed. So eager that it wasn't even necessary to actually read what was in it. If you don't have to read a bill to get it passed I don't see the problem with passing more than one unread bill when you have the opportunity.

When you reach the Texas side of the Rio Grande are you PHYSICALLY PRESENT IN THE UNITED STATES?
.
Which, of course, wouldnt apply to "Some Venezuelan on the Mexican side of the wall screaming let me in", or a Mexican on the other side of the river.

They had the momentum when they pushed through the ACA. Why stop there?
...because the ACA was their number one priority and they only had a two year window. They never could have gotten two huge pieces of controversial legislation done in that short time recognizing that in the States two years is really no more than 16-18 months given your perpetual election cycle. On the other hand, the GOP had 8 years.

That’s a myth. There are always interns and others to read bill. If someone didn’t read it it was their own fault.

Why didn’t Trump work to pass it? He had the best opportunity. No, he wanted a Trump vanity wall. Political expediency for his followers that don’t have a clue what immigration reform entails.

Are we taking asylum applications from people on the other side of the river?

This is referred to as reference bias. Due to COVID-19, border encounters declined significantly in 2020.

Let's be honest... illegal immigrants aren't taking jobs that Americans want. They pay taxes. The immigration jingoism is a wanna-be crisis manufactured by right wing media.

Again... why do you demand Democrats address the concerns of Republicans?

Let's be honest. If businesses had to pay more for jobs that illegal immigrants were doing more citizens would be interested in them. Politicians are complaining about a living wage but don't seem concerned that these immigrants are being taken advantaged of.

And the prices of these goods /services would increase rather dramatically. Nobody is going to pay $20/hr to pick vegetables....

You'll have to be more specific. Most politicians would likely have no problem going after employers who target illegal immigrants.

If they have no choice but to pay $20/hr or go out of business which do you think they would do? If you check out the employment scene you'd see that businesses are offering bonuses just to get employees. The cost of doing business is always passed unto the consumers. I don't see politicians demanding a living wage being too concerned about it. You pointed out the lower wage being paid to illegal immigrants and yet you want me to be more specific.

200,000 are being sent back to Mexico under title 42 every month too. You left that part out. They are trying multiple times too so there are actually less new crossers than in 2019.
Thanks for that chart. Just imagine how 2021 will look after the last 5 months of this year are included!!!!

Neither party wants immigration reform. If we wanted, we could put a bill forward that seals the borders (like other nations do) while simultaneously increasing legal immigration by 8x the current levels (and we need that human capital to compete with China). However, the Democrats aren't interested in strong borders and Republicans really dislike all those brown people, so nothing gets done.

Things won't change until Democrats start yelling about our borders being so porous (won't happen) and Republicans start moaning about why we have so little legal immigration (won't happen) so there you go.

And yet we keep electing the same people over and over again. If the government was ran like a business a lot of pink slips would be handed out.

An embassy can help to weed out those seeking asylum from those merely looking for economic relief. The flow would significantly slow down for those coming to our border seeking asylum for economic relief. Staff at the embassy can be upped whenever demand increases for assistance. In this way we won't have to track down those in our country (via catch and release). A huge influx of illegal immigrants avoid processing altogether by not showing up for their scheduled hearings. And until they are they consume our resources.
This sounds great.
But, it wouldn't accomplish the primary goal of importing future voters who, overwhelmingly, can be counted on to vote to support increased welfare programs. Let's face it, these 200,000 people a month aren't arriving with funds to get them going and skills to make them ready to fend for themselves.

The other possibility is political advantage. Tie it in with the push to permit noncitizens the right to vote and who benefits the most?
Absolutely and that push has already begun. State media is already on it.

If they have no choice but to pay $20/hr or go out of business which do you think they would do?
They would likely seek capital investment to harness technology as a means of boosting efficiency. Every time a state increases their MW, McDonalds adds another 100 kiosks.
If you check out the employment scene you'd see that businesses are offering bonuses just to get employees.
We are still in a global pandemic. Labor market disruption goes with the territory. Until we have vaccination levels necessary to achieve herd immunity, people will continue to be apprehensive about returning to the labor market.

Which politicians are demanding a living wage and pushing for illegal immigrant labor? I'll wait....
