I don't know a lot about Kirk Cameron in terms of faith other than knowing he was a sitcom kid who was involved in those Left Behind Movies. If this were something that were available to me for free to view at my convenience, I would give it a whirl. I have seen this issue addressed by some more heavy-weight religious scholars. I suspect this will be more of a bearing witness type documentary than something more intellectual.

I am not a big fan of that whole Jerry Falwell/Liberty University ministries thing but I have heard they have a difficult nursing program that produces some top-notch graduates so I applaud them for that.

I didn't know Kirk Cameron to be a born-again until I saw the Christian-based movie, Fireproof. I don't know much about Falwell except that he's an evangelist, so I can't really comment on that.
The movie, Fireproof - the message really hits. It's about marriage. Another awesome movie is "Courageous," but I can't remember if Cameron stars in it....I think not.

Seeing this Unstoppable trailer got me googling and I found several interesting videos about him. I watched Growing Pains but didn't realize that he was that popular at the time.
Imagine, at the age of 17 and with fame to boot.....listen to what Alan Thicke had to say about Cameron's finding religion.

Thanks for the link. I believe that may be a little bit of revisionist history in that interview. It seems to me I heard somewhere Kirk Cameron had become a total prima donna on that set and that his constant mocking of the actress who played his sister helped feed her anorexia that almost claimed her life. IDK. Most of us had our a-hole moments when we were teens, so I do not judge him today on what he may have done then, but I think that is a fluff interview.

Unstoppable will address the question, why does God let bad things happen to good people?

Maybe because there's no god and stuff just happens? When good things happen, I blame nobody, when bad things happen, I blame nobody; why does there need to be a reason or person to blame. If we stopped wasting our time on religion and focused more on our worldly problems, less bad things would happen to good people.

This one is funny:

Yup, bananas of that size are not naturally forming. They're a hybrid made by man; it really shows the sort of ignorance we're up against. But, the banana-fits-in-my-hand argument is fundamentally flawed; a turd fits in your hand too, does god want you to pick them up?

I didn't make fun of their beliefs. I made fun of Kirk Cameron... as an actor! And the premise of the movie... done to death. Are actors and movies things to be worshiped? Is there a Kirk religion I'm unaware of?

You guys are really far too touchy...

If your post is to make fun of him as an actor, then you're out of topic! Create your own thread about Cameron and his acting prowess, or lack of it. This is not whether he deserves an Oscar or not, nor whether he has a fan club. Go to ENTERTAINMENT for that. You're baying at the wrong moon! Or picking at the wrong scab. Or barking at the wrong tree.

The OP is about the M E S S A G E.
From what I understand, this is a DOCUMENTARY! So perhaps, Cameron wouldn't be acting, but narrating. Of course I'm just assuming since I haven't seen the movie.

AND who's talking about worshipping actors and movies??? Backtrack and read again what's posted about him - and try to understand what you read.

Who's being touchy, btw? Even assuming there is a Kirk Cameron religion - well, it's posted under the section, "RELIGION!" Why don't you post about the Atheist United Church - that would fit in here.
Why do you even feel you have to respond to this thread? You havta, you gotta, you gonna?

One wonders why some non-believers react to the word, God or Christianity, as a vampire would react to the whiff of garlic.
That would be an interesting premise in Philosophy or.....psychology.
Ooooooh.....

Anyway, where do you base your opinion about Unstoppable?
How do you know what's this documentary all about - have you been given a privileged advance screening?

IDK. Most of us had our a-hole moments when we were teens, so I do not judge him today on what he may have done then, but I think that is a fluff interview.

From what I've read (Wiki), there were storylines created that included fat jokes about the sister. The "prima donna" attitude was about another actress who played a character on the sitcom (she got fired for posing nude in Playboy)...........and apparently, he tried to censor some scripts which he found "racy."

Kirk Cameron claims he was once an atheist,[4] but when Kirk was 17, during the height of his career on Growing Pains, he developed a belief in God, and became a born-again Christian.[5][6][7] After converting to Christianity, he began to insist that story lines be stripped of anything he thought too adult or racy in Growing Pains.[8][9] According to interviews with cast and crew for an episode of The E! True Hollywood Story Cameron's new morals caused increasing creative headaches for the show as he would object to even mild innuendo. One example involved a scene which opened with Cameron's character Mike and a girl talking in bed only to pull out to reveal that they were on stage rehearsing a scene for a play. Cameron objected even to the suggestion of pre-marital sex on the show. Alan Thicke privately counseled him that more explicitly Christian entertainment might be a better fit for Cameron, commenting that Growing Pains was "about as pablum as it gets" in mainstream entertainment.

The biggest consequence of Cameron's conversion to Christianity was the firing of actress Julie McCullough who had landed the role of nanny Julie Costello in 1989. McCullough's character appeared in eight episodes of the show before she was fired at Cameron's insistence. Cameron objected to McCullough's having posed nude in Playboy, and accused the show's producers of promoting pornography. A decade later, Cameron apologized to his TV family, attributing his prior behavior to his lack of maturity.

In season four, the show's scripts called for the character Carol Seaver to be the brunt of fat jokes from her television brothers.

Control of a show may be a prima donna attitude, but what big actors doesn't exert that right if they have the clout to do so? Whether on tv, or the big screen.

As for the playboy nude posing that got the actress fired - this was during the 80's. It was a family sitcom....it has its own image to uphold. Miss Universe Vanessa Williams got stripped of her title from posing that were done in her past!

Imho, if movie makers maintain the old standard practiced by the old movie studios of the 50's or 60's - we wouldn't be having so much problems with our youth today. In those days, it was imperative for actors to keep their noses clean in public. Scandals were brushed under the rug.

Let's face it....actors hold considerable influence(s). There should be a considerable amount of responsibility that goes with that.

But at 17? And with that kind of determination to stick to his principles? Wow.

NOTE: This is becoming an interesting premise that should be in Entertainment section.

First, I don't go section by section through the forum... I look for new posts and threads, you know, active conversations. Often, to my detriment, I don't bother looking at which forum it's in.

I saw Cameron was releasing another film... imho, his talent is worth filling Gary Coleman's former position as a mall cop... so I put in my two cents.

So sorry to defile the sanctity of your religion thread. I get it... each thread is a little church, and if you want to come in, you have to sing with the choir.

My apologies.

Yeah you saw the very short OP about Cameron releasing a new film, based on his religion, addressing a religious question. That's what I mean....if you'd read and understood the OP - a very short OP may I add - you'd know your arrows weren't hitting the bull's eye!

In other words, you're singing off-key. So, there goes your choir....
And you dare criticise him for being a cheesy actor! :lamo

Anyway....apology accepted.

No... it's really not. He's a dim bulb. I can't imagine watching him pontificate on anything. I've seen his interviews... he's not smart. Of all the learned, scholarly theologians who have devoted their lives to the depth and complexity of this question... and this dork gets praise?

I think it's an important question for Christians to examine, both for spiritual reasons and because it's the leading cause of jadedness and "losing one's religion". Watching Cameron is like lining your walls with inspirational posters of kittens dangling from a limb that say "hang in there". This is just my opinion.

I respect the folks who practice the teachings of christ... however, I'm quick to point out the hypocrisies committed in it's name.

To most people outside of Christianity, Cameron makes you all look a little silly...

What "praise" are you talking about?

Besides, you think only the learned and the scholarly ones should be able to spread the Gospel?
That shows how much you know about Christianity.

As for hypocrisies - there's nothing more hypocritical than someone posturing as "learned," and criticising something they obviously don't understand at all. They only help to prove that most criticisms of Christianity are indeed based on ignorance.

Well sticking to his principles would have meant quitting the show IMO, not holding people hostage. Regardless, I did watch some of his interviews on youtube last night and interviews of people criticizing him. I find it somewhat interesting that he fits the mold of what atheists and others say a good Christian should be, but that didn't stop people from blasting him for answering the questions about gays. In the same interview where he said homosexuality was unnatural, he also talked about all people being sinners, and he was just as in need of a savior as anybody else, and condemned people mistreating others whether they be gay straight or bi.

I then went off on a tangent watching tubes of Ravi Zacharias whom I find to be a rather interesting person in his disposition. Very humanistic in his approach to his faith and how he applies it.

Here's one person's opinion on the matter at hand

Kirk Cameron’s 'Unstoppable' Movie Trailer Makes Him Look Nuttier Than Ever

Kirk Cameron should be down on his knees thanking Facebook for banning his trailer for the new movie Unstoppable. Had they not censored the poor little right wing Christian has-been, then none of us would know the insanity that is the movie trailer. And I am so glad I do.

The film is ostensibly the story of how Cameron uncovered the truth about God and why bad things happen in a world where God exists. He claims to have all the proof and that we can follow him along on his journey. Pretty impressive given people have been searching for this "proof" forever.

Regardless, it's not the story that is so insane here. It's his eyes ... yikes. I will never forget his eyes.

Well sticking to his principles would have meant quitting the show IMO, not holding people hostage.

If someone has the clout to make a difference, why couldn't they try do it? We're talking about a 17 year old who's found fame and fortune....don't you find anything wonderful about him finding religion/spirituality instead of drugs and notoriety - you see the headlines about young famous people this days. Either they're getting hauled before the courts for drugs, vandalisms, dui, violence, etc., - or they die! Most young ones don't know how to handle fame and fortune.

I don't see that as taking people "hostages." The producers didn't have to put up with his demands if they didn't want to. It's not like as if they didn't have any choice. They could've sacked and replaced him with someone else.

I saw one too where he was asked about his opinion about homosexuality. I wonder if it's the same one you saw...

I love what he said about how he'd be teaching his children. I think he handled it very well....and it was a humanistic response wherein he acknowledged that everyone is a sinner - including him.

When Piers Morgan badgered Cameron about homosexuality as a sin - Cameron stated a logical response: Morgan was asking a Christian! What does Morgan expect a Christian to say?

Imho, Morgan was grandstanding at the expense of Cameron.

In this interview, I'd be critical of the host instead of Cameron, specially when Morgan was citing the 7 states that legalized gay marriage like as if just because 7 states legalized it therefore that makes it not sinful. Cameron was right explaining about standards of morality.

Cameron should've turned the tables around and asked him, should the 7 states legalize the killing of all mentally retarded children - would that make it right?

Of course, liberal-minded and anti-religion people would latch on to his comment about homosexuality being unnatural.
Nothing surprising about that.

To a Christian, homosexuality is unnatural. It's clearly stated in the Bible. Remember, we're talking about the sex act itself.

I then went off on a tangent watching tubes of Ravi Zacharias whom I find to be a rather interesting person in his disposition. Very humanistic in his approach to his faith and how he applies it.

They have different styles. I've not had the chance to see Ravi Zacharias (but he's been recommended)...I've seen some of William Lane Craig. Would Zaccharias say homosexuality is not a sin if he was pinned down - the same way that Cameron was pinned by Morgan - to give an answer?

God gave us free will.
Unfortunately, a lot of people are born into abject circumstances and learn an unsavory behavior pattern, which they then perpetuate.
Some people are born unhealthy, and their actions, if not moderated, can be devastating; case in point, James Holmes for one.
We elect our officials, who then help mold our society, therefore, it would seem we are responsible in some way. But it's so much easier to blame God for everything.

Why would I? From the "new posts" tab, you can see the first paragraph and the thread title. Never occurs to me to look at the right side column to see what subforum it's in.

Otherwise, trust me.. this is the last place I'd head.

I doubt there is anything Ravi hasn't been pinned down on given he does so many Q&A's. More or less the same way as Cameron spoke in regards to the hypothetical regarding his son the Piers posed: Feeling some way does not mean one has to act on it. He believes it is possible to be gay and be a Christian but not be gay and be a leader in the community, at least though he gets murky in the last minute and a half and almost undercuts his argument IMO. It comes across as if yes you can be a gay christian but as a practicing gay who is a christian you cannot participate in the Christian community. Maybe you can watch it and come to a different interpretation.

Unstoppable is a one-night event on Sep 24, in theatres across the US. This trailer was initially banned by youtube and facebook because it was allegedly mistaken for a spam.

Unstoppable will address the question, why does God let bad things happen to good people?

Wow, he's looking really old now...

I haven't seen a good movie starring/directed/produced by him so I probably won't be there.
