University of Nebraska-Lincoln shuts down DEI office, eliminates $320k vice chancellor position

Traditionally White Colleges & Universities?

I dont see a thing wrong with that. I'd support it. At least as long as HBCUs exist. (y)
The only reason HBCU’s exist is because all colleges and universities were white only at one time. So, dumb idea.

Well.....colleges and universities certainly are NOT "all White" now....are they?

I would also lend my support to a national organization

National Association for the Advancement of White People.

It is my opinion that what is good for the goose....is good for the gander.

Just guessing but somehow I doubt if many Nebraskans rued your departure for long. Their tears would have soon. dried
I was assigned to Ft. Bliss, Texas in El Paso when I returned from VN. I was doubly pissed because I went from the jungle to the desert to a do nothing assignment. At first I hated the desert, but more I traveled around and saw, the more I appreciated its beauty. However, wouldn’t want to live here. I’ve been through both Nebraska and Kansas and I can understand why many would find them boring and not want to live there. But the people I’ve met from those states say they wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.

Everyone can try to play it off as racism from white people, but there is real reason there is backlash to DEI and it is not just at universities.

But that said, the "DEI is evil" victory lap may be premature.

Reading a few other sources suggests UNL is yes eliminating their DEI department but folding some of that function into the Office of the Chancellor, Office of Business and Finance, and Office of Student Life. It seems the announcement suggested a "centralized approach" to DEI in one department was not the answer for UNL.

Whatever politics was going on in the background it does not appear that all of DEI is being thrown out with the department, and this is not unlike what other universities all the way to corporations are doing with DEI.

Of course the politics of this remain, and we do not get to discount Conservative politics in Nebraska, but there may be some overreaction going on here far left to far right.

When we lived in Botswana we went camping in the Kalahari desert - more of a semi desert really - very many times over the course of four years. One of the most magical places on earth.

DEI is just a duplication of what human resources should be doing. Ludacris to add all these high price salaries and additional underlings.

University of Nebraska is getting out of the discrimination business.

Everyone wanted to pander to the woke movement but it is going by way of the horse and buggy.

One of the reasons why tuition rates are high. Gotta pay for the DEI "advisors".

Also, the Econ 101 question:
What happens to a market when it is flooded with someone else's money, increasing demand, and the supply of goods and services don't increase in matching fashion?
A: Distortion of prices upwards.

It is complete and utter economic illiteracy which asserts that more government money is going to fix this.
Instead, you set up a feed back loop which only makes it worse at a faster rate.

Racists in action.

This is not a surprise.

Good news.

It's about time people are judged by the content of their character and ability instead of the color of their skin.

That’s not proof. Not even close.
Yes, it is.

All the states ending DEI are states known for racial discrimination and hate. They are all red states.

Tempest in a teapot. This shit’s gotten old. It’s another layer of bureaucracy driving up the already ridiculous costs of higher education.
While all institutions of higher education have added some new layers of administration, due to increased population most of the increase in student costs is because states are funding their state universities and colleges at lower and lower rates.

"Across the U.S., 32 states are spending less on public colleges and universities than they did in 2008 .....That lack of state investment means the cost of higher education is being transferred to students and parents, driving the nation’s student-loan crisis. It also means students may not be getting the academic and other support they need to be successful in higher education and to graduate into fulfilling careers.

Too many students can’t afford to go to college and pursue their career dreams, and too many who do are sentenced to a lifetime of debt. This is especially true for students who might be the first in their families to attend college."college_funding_1.webp

Yes, efforts to eliminate DEI programs are rooted in racism

Right-wing activists who have long criticized liberalism and “wokeness” in higher education and helped force the resignation of Claudine Gay, Harvard University’s first African American president, have now set their sights on ending the diversity, equity and inclusion, or DEI, programs that these activists claim helped place figures like Gay in her job in the first place.

Christopher Rufo, the conservative activist who played a pivotal role in forcing Gay’s resignation, stated this view bluntly on X – formerly known as Twitter– following Gay’s ouster: “Today, we celebrate victory. Tomorrow, we get back to the fight. We must not stop until we have abolished DEI ideology from every institution in America.”

That is literally a drop in the bucket.
