U.S. braces for costly government shutdown in eight days

oh they love the drama don't they ?

all eyes on GOP and DNC, both of them name calling, right blaming the left, left blaming the right ...... last few minutes get something done and then in 6-12 months, repeat it again

its sad, its disgusting, we citizens deserve better
Right now the bigger problem is the infighting between the Freedom Caucus and GOP members who don't want a shut down. The big difference now than in times past is there's a House speaker whose testicles are in the hands of a caucus who has no qualms about squeezing, and little regard for broader consequences.

As we've seen with the last 2 Democratic Presidents, Clinton and Obama, it is a common Republican strategy to try to damage the economy leading into a presidential election.
Party over country is always the Republicans playbook.
It's because they don't have any attractive policies to win over the people's votes. Destroying the economy is always a winner when it's all you got.

Can't ber more damaged than the Bidenflation.

Maybe someone can explain how it affects families? Other than the scare tactics designed to turn them on the GOP. All the moochers and retirees will still get their checks. You people are pathetic.

It's already been explained that each week the government is shut down, GDP will decline by 0.2%. The federal government represents a significant amount of contribution to the economy whether you understand this or not.
You people are pathetic.
Why project your anger about being uninformed onto others? Now that is pathetic!

They won’t succeed on that front either. They will eventually cave in and the American public will rightfully blame the repulsicans for the disruption as McConnell has said.
We do need to get spending under control. It’s absurd how much money we are borrowing. The size of our debt is obscene.
If something can’t go on forever it won’t.

The GOP seems incapable of putting anything together to avoid this.

Many MAGA House Republicans such as Gaetz (R/FL) and Greene (R/GA) welcome a government shutdown.

Welcome a shutdown, damn close my friend. More like they are insisting.

"The economy can't be made worse" oh well ok then let's raise taxes on the rich to 90% it can't make the economy worse.

The the GOP still doesn't realize that Americans are capable of understanding more than just "cut spending." They broadcast their priorities every time they do this, its demonstrated in what specific cuts they propose. They propose deliberately cruel and stupid cuts that their hateful base just loves but most Americans see as monstrous. Food for children? You want to feed fewer children? That's your ****in priority when it comes to deficits? Jesus Christ would slap the shit out of you people.

It's the weekend. The government is shutdown. OMG!

OMG indeed.

It’s clear you already know that the GOP has lost the politics of their latest shutdown before it even happened.

Your weak attempt to brush it off makes that clear!

The GOP will celebrate another credit downgrade, and try to blame Biden for it.

And though the furloughed government workers have received backpay in the past, this is something Congress has to agree upon, and government workers realize that can't count on this Congress to do that.

In this job market many government workers will rightly conclude that it's time to quit letting Congress jerk them around and make the move to the private sector. Vital government functions will be impacted.

And the GOP will continue celebrating governmental paralysis that they have caused and try to hang that on Biden also.

The American people are suffering fatigue from all the assaults that the GOP is making on our rights and livelihoods, but hopefully we can save enough energy and get out to vote against these people who don't give the tiniest damn about having a healthy thriving citizenry in a healthy thriving economy in a healthy thriving democracy.

What's the budget now?

Boehner and Paul Ryan had to put up with these crazies.

They’re the main reason no one want to be Speaker, and McCarthy was the last man standing who actually wanted the job.

What's the budget now?

The United States does not have a budget. I assumed that you knew that.

No budget has been submitted by any President since Mitch McConnel promised in advance to shut the government down to force the GOP agendia on Barack Obama in 2009.

Since the Budget Act says the President “may” instead of “shall”, there is not requirement that he do so.

McConnell’s threat was the end of regular order in the House and Senate.

Okay, word games. How Much is Biden proposing to spend?

Now facts are “word games”……

OK, I’ll take that as a concession that you don’t know what youre talking about.

LOL! Obviously, you can't defend their spending us into oblivion. Just say it then. Would you be in favor of a balanced budget amendment?

I relish and want a shutdown. Should have been done and stuck with years ago to teach the Dems a lesson.

Shameful.

Hurting the people to attack a political party is not acceptable.

The GOP will be held accountable at the ballot box.

Count on it.

If you understood the budget process you would know that the President turned in his proposed budget. Rarely does Congress accept the President's proposed budget. Congress may use the President Budget as a suggestion. Reality is Congress develops their own budget. The President may or may not sign the budget into law.

Why is Congress incapable of passing a budget when they have had the Presidents proposed budget for over 6 months? Great leadership by the GOP, right?

Biden released his FY24 budget plan on March 9, 2023. Congress has been sitting on their rear ends for 6 months and produced no budget.

This proposed budget by the President was:
- The $6.9 trillion spending measure’s proposed big-ticket items include strengthening of Medicare and Social Security, restoring the full Child Tax Credit, and providing increased access to health care and affordable drugs, among others.
