I have only recently heard of this due to the new movie coming out. It's gotten me interested to read the book, but when I went to request it at my library I was number 193 in line to get it. Before I go out to buy it, I'd like to see if it would be worth it. Has anyone here read the book Twilight and then the series. Could you please review it for me without giving any spoilers. Thanks, I appreciate it.

I read the first three and then passed on the fourth, newest one, because I heard something about how it ended that made it seem lame and hardly worth the effort.

They're very much teen angst style books complete with vampires, werewolves, and a trite love triangle. Now I personally enjoy a good vampire/werewolf sci fi type book once in awhile and I like when they involve relationships that shouldn't be and all that. However I like them to be a tad more trashy, adult. The twilight series is very teen friendly and so while there's this big love triangle there's nothing very hot about it. The female character is sort of annoying, kinda dumb, and disappointing as a heroine. They go for "dangerous" with both the main guys in the story but given that it's a young adult story neither the werewolf or vampire is very dangerous. If I recall correctly the female lead saves her virginity for a ridiculous long time which is a great message for teens but a horrible story for bedtime or baths. If you want to read about vampire/werewolf love stories there are far better, and by better I mean trashier and hotter, writers out there. Think Dawson's Creek but with vampires and werewolves. At least in Dawson's Creek the better man won out in the end. Dawson was such a dweeb. In this series the dweeb wins which makes it suck all the more in my opinion.

Thanks alot. I was wondering because it was under the category "teen fiction" I do like more adult themes to the story like you.

Yeah really. What the hell good is a hot vampire or hot native American werewolf if neither of them are gonna throw you down and start ripping clothes off? Plus the Bella chick is really annoying and if the female lead in a story annoys me then it's no fun. I can't imagine I'm her if I don't even like her so I personally think there's no rush to go read this if you're an adult woman. The kids really love 'em though which is why I read them. The 6th grade girls at school are all hopelessly in love with the tale. So it's all very sweet for them.

I read the first one. As the previous poster mentioned, they are very much "teen fiction." Think of them like the vampire equivalent to Eragon. As far as the writing goes... I have definitely read more brain numbing literature than Twilight (Princess Diaries, for example). The book was not badly written per se, it's just very high school-ish.

If you are a more sophisticated reader, I would recommend not reading them. Basically the series revolves around a high school girl and a teenage vampire. The central conflict being "should she get bitten by him so they can live happily ever after but she would lose her soul..... or not."

The series' success I believe revolves around the fact that it's a romance but at the same time is not smut. So we have target teenage girl audience plus parental approval.

Isn't it a teen/ young adult series?
I read an interview with the author recently; she's a mormon, apparently, and the book/s (not sure if there's more than one) rigorously reflect that, steering away from any hint of sex or profanity.
Sounds a little lame, personally.
I like my vampires spicy, à la Anne Rice.

Although I like the actress that stars in the movie, Kristen Stewart, quite a bit.
She gave an excellent portrayal of a rape victim in the indie film Speak.
She's been in some really lame movies as well, however, so I probably won't go see Twilight on her account, although I might watch it when it comes out on cable.

I was made to go see this with my wife, who read the series. Its definantley a teen/tweener movie. I don't know how the book is, but the movie kind of comes off as being geared towards the ever aging Harry Potter market. It sucked.

Wow, that sucks.

I know. In that one scene, he makes a big deal about her getting to "see him as he is" in the sunlight(WTF ever happened to sunlight being bad for vamps?), so I am expecting some illusion to be dropped, and a grotesque mummy like creature to appear. Nope, just happens that he is apparently wearing body glitter.

WTF?!?!

That's even gayer than one of Anne Rice's vampires.

So have you called the cops on your wife for spousal abuse after she made you go see that crap?

Naw, I exacted my revenge by making her listen to the new Cradle of Filth CD in the car. She hates them with a passion. I did get to see a bunch of a local college teams female volleyball players, standing in line in front of me(legs for miles), so I think I came out the winner overall.

Thank you for this assessment. I don't read very much because it makes my head hurt but if I'm going to read something romantic it better be hot otherwise what's the point? To think I was almost fooled into buying this because of the hype.

Ha Ha ...no pun intended ("suck")...

Anyway--talloulou, you really should consider freelance reviewing--you do a great job on reviewing books and movies!

So I saw the movie and thought it was pretty good. I kept waiting for him to just ravage her and them have hot crazy sex, but then I had to -keep- reminding myself it was only PG-13. Sucks because I would love to have seen Robert Pattinson butt naked. Now damn, that is one fine guy.

I kinda want to read the book now, only because I did like the movie and I know books are always so much better, but I feel I will be disappointed because of the teenaged theme. Oh well, it never hurts to read.

Everything Tall said was true but I enjoyed the books in spite of it ;) The 1st and the 4th were my favorites.

I liked the Harry Potter series and they were kids books too :3oops:

The Harry Potter books ranks up there with Agatha Christie and the Bible.
I was one of those people who stood in line for the last book - But it was worth it. First edition. Woop :D

I've got the series--all first editions too. :2razz:

Hey, if you like Agatha Christie (I do too), you might enjoy Rex Stout's characters, Nero Wolf and Archie Goodwin. Rex Stout was a very prolific writer, like Christie was. The Stout books kind of follow each other so it's best to start with the first one and go forward.

Hmmmm think I'll go to the used bookstore today and start a little revival.
