Re: Turkish soccer fans chant Allahu Akbar during Paris tribute

At a soccer match between Turkey and Greece in Istanbul on Tuesday fans showed there disrespect during a moment of silence for Paris victims. They booed, whistled, and chanted Allahu Akbar. Turkey is a member of NATO but has increasingly become more fundamentalist. My question is are these people what we would consider moderate muslims? This behavior is disgusting.

I suspect that they are angry with the Europeans. I personally think that this behavior is stupid, but the Turks do have good reason to resent the behavior of European governments towards them in the last couple of years. And that European behavior did remove the pro Westerners from power. So the influence of Islam and of its less moderate kinds has been much less under check, than it was and would have been.

They probably also have the feeling that the West does not care very much about their dead. How often in the last couple of years have we held a minute of respect for their terror dead before international soccer games? They must think we are self centered jerks that are casually making fun of them without even noticing.

Do you also blame the French for the Paris attacks?

It is going to be painfully difficult to pin the behavior of this group on the whole, or suggest that these are or are not "moderate Muslims."

There is plenty of disgusting behavior being shown by Muslims in various contexts these days, but what does *not* make the news are all the Muslims that are all over Europe right now that are not showing these same behaviors. Like all of those who are showing their own disapproval and contempt for what happened in Paris, and perhaps in their own way showing their support for Paris by not making a spectacle of themselves.

While I still contend that whatever "moderate Muslims" are is a political distinction at best, perhaps we should start applying that term to those Muslims we know exist who do nothing wrong thus do nothing to warrant being in the news like these 'tards at a soccer match.

France bombed ISIS. ISIS fought back. Tit for tat. Violence begets violence.

I don't think blame a very productive category for these things. Understanding how things come about is an other matter. The earlier makes enemies, while the latter helps avoid doing so in the next round.

However, comments on social media sites have suggested that the boos were not to disrespect those who had died in the attacks - but more to do with the hypocrisy of the Western world.

International teams did not hold a minute's silence after the Ankara terror attack in October. More than 100 people died in the Turkish capital after two bombs were set off outside the Ankara Central railway station on 11 October; Turkish fans also booed during a minute's silence of their game against Iceland on 13 October.

Turkey fans boo minute's silence for Paris victims - but it was not a mark of disrespect, claim commentators on social media | Europe | News | The Independent

True; this is the result of fighting a war with no strategy to win. Its called leading from behind.

War has always been like a football/soccer game.

For the beginning of WW1 is was worse with all nations cheering at the start.

So these cheering Turks are probably just not over the loss of WW1 yet and they want a rematch.

France bombed ISIS. ISIS fought back. Tit for tat. Violence begets violence.

Tit for tat is a time honored viewpoint.

Herodotus talks about it in a story in his famous History.

But the tit should be much stronger than the tat.

Re: Turkish soccer fans chant Allahu Akbar during Paris tribute

The English have been the strongest champions to allow Turkey full membership of the European Union before they themselves leave. Go figure.

Re: Turkish soccer fans chant Allahu Akbar during Paris tribute

People always see what they want to see.

People in Europe are more precious than others in the world approach causes such things, As the rest of the world deal with it and get used to it, so must you.

Re: Turkish soccer fans chant Allahu Akbar during Paris tribute

so to commemorate and memorialize people who died by people who supposedly don't represent Islam, moderate Muslims chant during said moment of silence that their "God is great"?

Just what message are they trying to send?

Re: Turkish soccer fans chant Allahu Akbar during Paris tribute

Perhaps not all cultures use a moment of silence.

Perhaps some are upset their national tragedies don't get the same respect.

Perhaps they heard about Americans shouting slurs against Islam during their football moments of silence.

Perhaps they heard of the dozens of Americans threatening to go out and shoot anyone who looks Muslim (we had two in Oklahoma IIRC- we can't be the only ones)

Perhaps some just want to complain about any behavior from folks they don't much care for.... :peace

Re: Turkish soccer fans chant Allahu Akbar during Paris tribute

This is really no different from those in Palestine and Iraq and Iran and Pakistan and Indonesia and other Muslim countries who were dancing in the streets and praising God and bin Laden on 9/11 and the days after.

One's true heart and sympathies are displayed during unrehearsed and unrestrained celebrations. Only some in the western media and those on the left who follow them and apologize for their every atrocity believe that the vast majority of Muslims are moderate and/or peaceful. Perhaps those who were born and raised in western societies, if they can avoid the radical teachings in their places of worship, are moderate and peaceful, but the vast majority of Muslims don't live in the west.

Well since the turkish soccer stadium in turkey requested one, there is a probability that they do.

Perhaps some are upset their national tragedies don't get the same respect.

so to show this you invoke your god to antagonize people not like who who were also targeted?

Perhaps they heard about Americans shouting slurs against Islam during their football moments of silence.

and bengazhi was about a video.

Perhaps they heard of the dozens of Americans threatening to go out and shoot anyone who looks Muslim (we had two in Oklahoma IIRC- we can't be the only ones)

Since I haven't heard that, I'm doubting they have.

Perhaps some just want to complain about any behavior from folks they don't much care for.... :peace

Allah akbar!

Re: Turkish soccer fans chant Allahu Akbar during Paris tribute

France bombed ISIS. ISIS fought back. Tit for tat. Violence begets violence.

But why did France bomb ISIS? That is a nonsensical reply.

And in the US.

It was scrubbed and now if you mention it, you have liberals say it never happened.

It happened,

Paterson, NJ

we saw it.

Perhaps none of that justifies bad behavior.

Re: Turkish soccer fans chant Allahu Akbar during Paris tribute

What makes a person who shouts out during a respectful silence "a moderate" in any way?

So you are saying all those fans, not a person, but nearly the whole place shouting allah akbar are extremists?

Don't tell your liberal friends that's what you believe! ;)

True, but this also speaks to this notion that the radicals are some tiny segment of the Muslim population. They are not.

Europe is overrun with hateful Muslims who wish the worst on the West, whether they are actively jihadists or not.

Actually, if we look back as far as 2003, we could just as easily say "this is the result of fighting a war with nothing beyond a strategy to win."

Re: Turkish soccer fans chant Allahu Akbar during Paris tribute

I get their frustration. Where was the world with their solidarity when ISIS killed over 100 Turks at that trainstation bombing last month? Where was the Facebook option to put the Turkish flag on your avatar. Where were the red and white lights adorning the famous buildings of the world in honor of their dead? Where were all the flags flown at half staff for them?

So I get it. As difficult as it can be, though, those Turkish fans should have taken the high road. Or at least picked a more opportune time to express their frustration. But that frustration is well founded.
