Was Trump popular in the primaries because he is not a bible thumper? Are many of the mainstream Republican voters sick and tired of the far right's bible thumping so that is a major reason they voted for Trump?

Nah, I think Trump was popular in the primaries because many viewed (and still view) him as a anti-establishment candidate.

Maybe the fact that he wasn't a Bible thumper also played into Trump's popularity, but I don't know that for sure.

Trump's popularity is due to a few factors I think ...

1) Many Republicans are fed up with and distrust the establishment of the party that has consistently failed to live up to the rhetoric they campaign on. Some folks seem to have become so fed up, they'll back anyone who will take on the establishment - irregardless of their actual positions.

2) Trump has definitely tapped into the angry anti-PC vibe. In years past Trump being a vulgar, petty, thin skinned, playground style bully would've been an automatic disqualifier to most of the public, but a certain segment celebrates that because its "not PC" and Trump is just "telling it like it is". Furthermore, the Republican base has increasingly wanted a "fighter" as their standard bearer. Not a moderate like McCain or Romney. Heck, 4 years ago John Huntsman had rock solid conservative credentials and was widely panned as a RINO for little more reason than the tone of his campaign which was thoughtful and reserved, rather than antagonistic and aggressive. Trump's tactics are what some people consider to be the tactics of a "fighter".

3) Trump has also brought in a lot of non-Republicans who were traditionally apolitical. These folks have bought into the one part of Trump's message that has been fairly consistent - an America first, anti-trade, isolationist, anti-immigrant message. Protectionism and isolationism are two things the establishment of both parties reject and thus people who feel this way have few outlets to back.

Short answer: no.

Longer answer: this is an attempt to hijack the Trump movement for your own preferences. Cmon.

I think between the anti PC and anti establishment talk, and the projection of strength he was a shoe in from the beginning. Religion was a non factor.

Why would anyone vote Republican if they weren't a Bible thumper?

Trump is popular because it was never about small government and national security. It was always about xenophobia and bigotry.

Trump is popular to the imagination because you could imagine a lot of things he could get done but what of his competence as a one man wrecking crew, do we really want to do this to the world? Russia wants us to.

Slight revisions in order I think: anti-trade => America first trade deals, no, not isolationists, anti-immigrant => anti-illegal immigrant.

I think your points #1 & #2 are accurate though.

Trump was popular? He was more popular than any other individual candidate, but popular would be a major push, note the reason many Conservatives that do not like or back him.

That's a ridiculous question. Just because we believe in conservative values does not mean we are all bible thumpers. Only the far right are bible thumpers.
