Trump turns president in louisiana as obama chills

Right-wingers are so shallow-minded that they think physically showing up to a disaster site is "presidential" instead of actually overseeing the recovery process.

Obama did a good thing, too. By not showing up and taking valuable resources away to protect him while the recovery effort is still under way was right thing to do. Besides he sent his top people from FEMA, National Guard, disaster relief, etc to help plan and assist in the recovery effort as soon as the Governor declared it an emergency.

I have never thought FEMA and whatnot didn't react well. I have no beef with Obama on this. There are some in Louisiana that seem a little perturbed that Obama hasn't shown up, and naturally the media ran with that as a story, and then this Trump visit falls on the heels of that story. Of course there's politics involved all the way around - all sides. However, from my perspective, the more focus the area receives, the more help they're going to receive. That's a good thing.

The governor suggested Trump stay away, but send a check. You can read into that what you want.

I've always wondered why people care if a POTUS shows up to a disaster site. What's he going to do, start filling sandbags?

I despise W. And he did indeed botch the Katrina relief. But one thing I didn't care about was that he didn't make the trip down there. Why waste time getting on an airplane for a photo-op, because that's all it is. Stay in the White House, stay apprised of events, and give orders as necessary.

So in that vein, what's Trump going to do? The only thing he could do is fill sandbags because he doesn't have any power to do anything else. From a cursory search, Louisiana appears to be a solidly red state, so why go there when you're losing battleground states all over the map. Maybe if Trump could pay the storm to move to California, that'd be something. We sure could use it.

Donald Trump going for a photo op instead of doing anythingof substance? No way.

FEMA did an excellent job after the Northridge earthquake. It was like well oiled machine. It's a shame it wasn't for Katrina.

Of course it's politics...Trump needed to visit Louisiana to take the attention away from his campaign manager scandal and his non-apology. I didn't know the governor suggested he send a check. lol

I saw on TV that a lot of police and government vehicles had to be assigned to protect Trump during his visit which probably took away from the recovery effort. Over 30,000 displace peopled and they're still going door to door looking for more. But at least he's bringing attention to disaster, I'm just not sure if it's the kind they need.

This doesn't help anyone but perhaps Trump. These types of visits are logistically problematic for disaster areas.

I'd have to agree. These types of visits are logistically problematic for disaster areas. Kinda makes Bush's fly over without stopping, expressing interest without interfering, the best possible compromise, doesn't it?

It would be better if he could make mexico to pay the storm to move. I hear he is good at that

Yes. I was certainly no fan of Bush and there are legitimate criticisms about how he handled Katrina. But the flyover isn't one of them.

Agreed. There are legitimate criticisms of how Katrina was handled. There's many actors / players involved.

Some of the blame rightfully goes to Bush and his administration flubbing it badly, but there is also some that goes to the New Orleans mayor as well as Louisiana Governor.

I guess you are now going to have to say the same thing about Obama, as his visit is scheduled for Tuesday. :lamo

no, not true. the governor asked obama to delay a few days so things were better under control. there were 150 cops today watching dumb ass, those cops would have been more useful elsewhere. this thread is classic dishonesty from the OPer.

Hadn't heard that it had been rescheduled from Tuesday. Suffice it to say, Obama's going to visit, apparently baited into it by Trump or public opinion or both.

It appears that Trump's actions in LA has prompted Obama to do what's right and make a moral-boosting visit to the area. It still remains to be seen if Clinton will do the same. Perhaps her physical condition will make such a trip too taxing for her. In any case, the least she could do is match him in donations to the victims of the disaster.

Nope, that was arranged with the State officials. Trumps was not. Trump hindered rescue efforts... Obama wont. Trump is an asshole, using the biggest US disaster since Katrina for his failing political campaign. All he did was fly in, disrupt a ton of aid work, speak trash and lies about people and hand out a few aid boxes for a photo op. Disgusting. He should have donated a million or two instead, that would have had a far bigger impact on aid efforts.

This right here, folks, is a prime example of a political hack taking the good works of a man, spinning his perception of those works in the most vile and disgusting manner...and for only one reason: He hates Trump.

Politically trump won this round. Dems are playing catch up and the media really cant defend them after the way they exagerated bush not landing in no after katrina.

You made an interesting suggestion about clinton making a donation. They run a charity foundation. Where is that foundation and what efforts is it taking to help those people? She should be thankful that trump hasnt found a way to hammer her on this. The optics of this are worse than Obamas really.

It certainly looks that way right now.

You are obviously too young to remember the reaction of 'shallow-minded' left wingers to Bush flying over Katrina ravaged Louisiana rather than landing.

Not to take away the magnitude of the damage there but this is the biggest disaster since hurricane sandy not katrina
