Trump to sign order making English the official U.S. language

Other countries have multiple languages with no problem, so I'm curious about the "must" qualifier.
If you would have read the quote, it says BUT one language, not MUST! Your reading comprehension skills need work it seems.

Well, the eggs not so much. If you want to go the gender neutral route in Spanish, then it would be "hueves".
:)
Kind of a self incriminating remark isn't it? Price of eggs are this high because the last administration ordered the slaughter of the hen layers whether they were infected or not until this occurred. Nice to see you making the point the last administration was a sham

How so?

The culling of chickens is standard USDA practice when avian flu is detected in a poultry farm, and there have been outbreaks of it in the past few years resulting in this action being taken to protect the public. Farmers voluntarily report outbreaks to the FDA and cull their flocks as a preventative measure. Avian flu is highly contagious, and large poultry farms take this measure because they house chickens in very close quarters which makes them susceptible to infection. It appears the "sham" here is your lack of knowledge on the topic. Unless, of course you do know and would rather have the public exposed to potentially diseased poultry.

Fair point. Ok, so rephrasing the original comment: so I'm curious about the "but" qualifier.
It's called a unifier..... that way, we're all on the same page and that there will be little, if no, misunderstandings

How so?

LOL, once again off the mark, millions were killed in areas that did not have the issue. .... good try but you do need to upgrade.

Incorrect. The farmers report infected flocks to the USDA. There was no random selection of poultry farms that were targeted. Good grief.

What is the language of the constitution that protects our rights?

I'll go with that one.

It's kind of a thing around here to provide a link to the source of your information.

What is the language of the constitution that protects our rights?
Some dialect of German.
I'll go with that one.
Why does it need to be declared 'official'? My understanding of the term is that an official language is a language citizens are entitled to interact with their government in. But that's already just English in the US.
See, my worry is that it might be step one to banning other languages. In some circumstances.

Would it be less protective if the Constitution was written in Aztec Nahuatl?
While we are at it a requirement to be a naturalized citizen is you have a working knowledge of the english language.

The path to U.S. citizenship through naturalization has several requirements, including English proficiency. Understanding, speaking, reading, and writing English are essential. English fluency is essential for integrating into U.S. social, cultural, and civic life. The naturalization interview assesses basic English skills. However, there are scenarios where you can become a US citizen without speaking English, particularly through specific exceptions.

The emphasis on English proficiency stems from its perceived importance in ensuring a seamless assimilation into American life. It fosters community involvement, political participation, and daily communication. These aspects are crucial for a fulfilling U.S. life

Thank you. With several members of the extended family naturalized citizens, I am aware and informed. Still, good to read the qualification posted in the thread.

BTW, I chose Nahuatl because it is within the U.S. an obscure language spoken by very few people. Some of them are U.S. citizens living along the Texas-Mexico border who do not speak fluent English. At least that was true the last time I looked into it.

Similarly, along the border, a decade or so ago, one of our border towns ignited a national controversy because they mandated all town business be performed in Spanish. Rather than make it an English-Spanish contest for supremacy, the good people in office were actually simply concerned with how to communicate with their majority of non-English speaking residents.

And this will do...what?

If I hear someone speaking Spanish or another non-English language, do I call the cops?
This will freak out 70% of the country that think they speak American.

Also, time to drop the Z's and start including U's.

Immigrants in this country are going to learn English as a matter of survival.
Those that don't make a serious attempt at assimilation by speaking the most important language in the world will be left on the dustbin of history.
During the period of heavy emigration from Europe in the late 19th century and up to the mid-20th century there were no efforts to make English the official language of the country. The immigrants learned English to survive or they suffered.

I tend to feel making English the official language of America is akin to changing the name of a body of water to the Gulf of America.
What difference does it make to those people who have other concerns on their minds like making sure they survive in this rapidly changing society?
What kind of "leader" creates mass confusion?

Donald can overstep his authority in any way he likes. Only magas are going to try to call the Gulf of Mexico something Donald made up. Most people are sticking with the name which has existed for all of history. It's too much trouble to try to change it. Every map and chart has it as the original name. All Donald has done has been to "throw things into confusion."

Hamilton's words ring truer ever day:

"“When a man unprincipled in private life desperate in his fortune, bold in his temper, possessed of considerable talents, having the advantage of military habits—despotic in his ordinary demeanour—known to have scoffed in private at the principles of liberty—when such a man is seen to mount the hobby horse of popularity—to join in the cry of danger to liberty—to take every opportunity of embarrassing the General Government & bringing it under suspicion—to flatter and fall in with all the non sense of the zealots of the day—It may justly be suspected that his object is to throw things into confusion that he may ‘ride the storm and direct the whirlwind.”"

We are not going back and changing all the maps and charts because of his stupid rant. Even if he orders some federal agencies to do so, most of the nation and the rest of the world are still going to call it the Gulf of Mexico. Dumb!

Were Hamilton's words directed at any one person or simply a rant against anyone who would disagree with Hamilton's goal of having the Federal government assume states' debt?
It's a good quote and I can see how you would use it to diminish Trump.
But over a Gulf name change? Why should you care if the Gulf has a name "America" in it? It's a name. Not copyrighted.
As a Progressive, your disdain for Trump would be the ONLY reason you would care about a name change. How shallow.

You have no idea why I object to the idea of a needless and costly name change. You're only guessing. And you are wrong.

There is no point in causing so many records to change. They won't change. And neither will other nations. What has been done is to create expensive confusion over something that never had to be done and wasn't even an issue. That's not leadership. That is confusion creation.

Donald might as well try to tell everyone that we are now going to call the sky earth and the earth is now water and water is now the sky. There will not be compliance in anyone but his cult and those who must follow his orders, even if they are pointless foolish stupid orders. Those orders are not illegal. They must be followed no matter how absurd. Following them does not make them less ridiculous. He has overstepped his bounds. And of course, that is completely within his own character because he knows no bounds. He is certainly unconstrained by the law now that his cult of worshipers have placed him above the law.

The suggestion that perhaps Donald is suffering from syphilis is making increasing sense with every stupid thing he does. Those red splotches on his hands were never explained, now were they? That was simply left as a big fat mystery. Apparently that one was beyond the right wing bloviator excuse machine.

Well, Boo-Hoo, you don't like name changes.

Did you voice any objections when US Military base names were changed to erase the memory of Confederate generals who fought against the Union?
Or how about the dismantling of Confederate statues?
So what is the big deal about changing the name of the southern Gulf?
People get used to name changes all the time.
Think about all of the streets in this country renamed Martin Luther King whatever or Cesar Chavez whatever to show Progressive support for those two activists.
Did you ever complain about Google Maps name changes when those street names changed.?

Your hatred of Trump is the overriding factor here.
What effect does the name change have on you?
Does it somehow make you a lesser person? Or maybe it makes you want to renounce your citizenship and move to Canada or Belize? That could be a good thing for you.

You wrote: "What has been done is to create expensive confusion over something that never had to be done and wasn't even an issue."

So who is confused? You? over what? Will you be confused because you can't find the Gulf of Mexico on your Google maps anymore?

Change all the names inside the US you want, it doesn't matter. But when you start changing names on the world map you start teaching your kids a different geography from what everyone else in the world knows. Not a good idea. Hasn't worked well for history, won't work well for geography.
What's next, a US version of geometry? Didn't a state legislator once propose changing the value of π to 3, to simplify math?

Don't look now, but over the past 110 years, the geography of Europe, the Middle East, and Africa have changed significantly as a result of world wars in the 20th century.
Kids got used to it because they had to.

The changing of the value of pi is really stupid.

I'll go with that one.
What if we translate it into Ukrainian ? The translation me be better then constitution itself.

I will go for 3. It's simpler. Less digits to memorize.
